The Bills thru the eyes of an Eagles fan site

SB Nation is the parent organization of Buffalo Rumblings, a web site cited from time to time here at TBD.  They have fan run sites for all NFL teams.  This is an article looking at the Bills, one of the Eagles' opponents in the 2025 season.  I thought it was interesting.  Essentially, they believe that Buffalo did precious little to change the team after yet again failing to surpass the Chiefs in the playoffs.   The is a reference to the old adage about the definition of insanity "doing the same thing over and expecting different results.  No mentioned by name, the article says Buffalo brought in old injured veterans (Tre White, and Joe Bosa) and "warm bodies" (Josh Palmer and Elijah Moore?) at WR.  No mention is made of Buffalo's focus on defense in the draft.

So, are the authors right - Buffalo is destined for another playoff run that will again fall short, or are they underestimating the potential effect that newcomers could have on the team?

My own perspective is that Buffalo's near misses in its attempts to reach the Super Bowl are not a reason to go into a full scale rebuild.  The relatively minor retooling that the Bills have done is due in part to salary cap constraints and an effort to preserve the team's long term outlook, rather that "blowing the wad" on a one-time effort to get over the hump.  I think there is still reason to believe that small changes could be enough to give Buffalo the improvements they need to not only get to the Super Bowl, but to win it.  They were not that far off.

We seem to have followed the process this offseason. We just don't know if the process will ever end in a Super Bowl.

I could make the argument that he is right, and it would be easy to make and shored up by the fact that it was a coin flip that determined 1 Chiefs win, poor calls on another, and a missed FG for another. The Bills are on the cusp of beating the Chiefs with exactly what they've had and done the last 4-5 years.

So, his point doesn't really strike home like he would like when you look at the reality of those outcomes

You have to be in it to win it...

But the Eagles would have abused the Bills if they made the SB last year.

The Eagles front 4 was brutal, the Bills drafted to address this for sure. Hopefully they hit sooner than later.

Not fair to put this pressure on a rookie draft, it's a start 🤞

The Bills are exactly where they have been, and that is one of the best teams in the NFL. A team just one or two plays away from the superbowl. If some random Eagles supporters don't think the Bills have changed much, whatever. The Bills are still an extremely tough team to beat, just like they have been the last few years.

The Bills had a much better offensive line and run game than the Chiefs last year. It would not have been the same game if it was the Bills in the Superbowl. Not saying the Bills would have won, but the offensive line would not have been ragdolled and Josh Allen would have made some plays. It would have been a long day trying to stop Barkley, though.

Teams in Buffalo's position don't usually make HUGE on-paper upgrades in a single offseason.  Without tons of salary cap space, the focus is on bargain free agents.  Not bid splash signings.  And draft picks in the mid/late 20's are not expected to make a tremendous immediate impact, as opposed to the Top 5-10 prospects.

But teams in Buffalo's position also don't NEED to make huge upgrades.  We have won our division and at least one playoff game 5 seasons in a row.  A play or two different, and we could easily have appeared in 2-3 Super Bowls over the last few years.  All we really need is a few tweaks in the right areas, and luck to finally bounce our way.

Whether we made the right moves this offseason remains to be seen.  The idea that we needed some kind of major overhaul to suddenly have a chance at the Eagles or Chiefs is pure sportsfan ego talking.  Anybody with a tiny ounce of football knowledge knows the Bills are right in the same tier as them.

The Bills had one of the best O-Lines in football last year, along with the hardest QB to sack in the league.

The Chiefs struggled blocking, and were shuffling guys around going into the playoffs.

Just because KC struggled in that game doesn't mean it would have played out the same against us.

I think this kid is gonna be a steal in the 3rd. He will be a stud.

Absolutely,  I think Hoecht will have an impact as well as Forrest at S . Really like the way Beane maneuvered through the draft and FA

Only losses were a washed up Von and Hollins,  made a great offense better and a mediocre defense much better

He was my favorite pick in the draft. I have high hopes for him despite where he was drafted. If he is the real deal it will go down as an absolute steal in the draft.

Personally, I think the Bills would've lost to the Eagles in the SB, but in a one score game.  We're almost there, though.  This year, maybe?

The Eagles were more of the things that we feared when playing the Ravens than the Ravens were. Horrible match up for us. We couldn’t stick to the run game vs the Chiefs. Eagles had one of the best run defenses in the NFL. I don’t see it being close last year but not surprising some here think it would be.

Eagles run defense wasn't better than the Chiefs.  Eagles, Chiefs, and Ravens all would have given us similar problems.  Enough defense to make it hard to break it open and a run game that would keep our pass rush in check leaving our secondary that couldn't cover.  We had enough offense and just enough defense to beat Lamar.  We had almost enough offense and not enough defense in a winnable game vs the Mahommes.  If I had to guess we would have been in another close game where we would need to pull something out to win if we had ended up playing the Eagles.  I certainly think the offense is ready to win a championship.  The defense has to find some playoff swagger somewhere.  Even the years with pretty decent talent when the game is on the line we don't make the stops we need in the playoffs.  They certainly are trying to infuse the defense with difference makers so I can't say they're not trying.

Could they be right?  Sure.  If Bosa goes down early and often and has no impact on the team and the defensive rookies don't make much of an impact this season, the defense could absolutely look similar to what we have seen in the past few years.  If Palmer is a bust of a FA signing and Moore doesn't live up to the expectations I, and a few other people have put on him, then the offense likely stays where it was as well.  So, could the Bills be the definition of insanity?  If things go wrong, absolutely.

However, if Bosa does find a way to stay healthy, I believe he has plenty of gas left in the tank to make an impact.  And I am actually pretty high on the defensive rookies.  While I don't see them dominating early in the season, or maybe at any point this season, I do think they will get better as the year goes along, especially the guys on the defensive line.

The fact is, we don't need them to be an absolutely dominant defense.  We need them to make 2 or 3 more stops a game, especially in the Playoffs.  Just don't give up 30 points to teams that haven't scored 30 all season in the Playoffs.  Find a way to hold these teams to 24 or less and then take your chances with the offense you have.

The line is so thin for us when it comes to winning and losing.  We literally could be 3 or 4 plays away from having a couple of Super Bowl championships already, but we didn't get it done in key moments and key plays.  Find a way to flip that script this season.  Make those 3 or 4 game changing plays instead of giving them up.  Hopefully this new influx of talent can be the difference and flip those bad plays to good ones because that can be the difference between winning the whole thing or going out early once again.

The Eagles were 3rd in EPA defense Overall, 2nd vs the Rush last year. Baltimore was one sport worse vs the the run and 11th overall. Eagles dropped 37 on us the year prior with a less productive offense and a better Bills defense. They had the 4th worst defense in football that year. We have shown no history of playing up in weight class in the postseason. I don't think it would be close.

The Bills brought in so much DL help that's SOMEONE is going to make a splash.  This defense is going to be a lot better.

Not only was the defensive line massively improved I would also say at corner there was significant investment.

This is good.

The Bills have brought in a lot of guys with potential to be upgrades over last year. And have guys developing. They ALL be stars, but neither will ALL of them bust.  If Palmer and Moore BOTH emerge, watch out. But even if only one has a nice season, Bills are in good shape. If Hairston shines with Benford, it's a huge upgrade.  Bills have other guys who can play the corner if Max grows more slowly. As I said before, some D lineman will emerge.

Many fans outside Buffalo don't understand.  They see no splash free agents or draftees, and they think there's nothing good going on.
