He inherited all those people. It took him a minute to realize that he needed to let them all go.

And characterizing Marrone as “walking” is disingenuous. He tried a power-play and Terry wasn’t having it so he told him “there’s the door.”  if you really thought he was worth keeping he would’ve given into his demands.

And yeah, Rex was a mistake. But a short-lived one. Is Kraft suddenly a crappy owner because he hired Mayo for a season?

if 3 years is now "a minute" then you're right again doc!

And the Bills and Amerks are both pretty strong. Only the Sabres lag. In other words, it all sucks. 🙄

If the sabres team were a contender they’d be a cash cow. Everyone knows this but they just suck

The Sabres are where the Bills were during the drought; not bad enough to pick 1st but not good enough to make the playoffs. Last year they were something like #6 in the NHL in scoring but in the bottom five in goals allowed.

The Sabres are in no way "on the way out". It's regularly one of the strongest markets in the country for viewership despite a lousy franchise. I don't see any scenario in which the league would permit a move.

New ownership? Sure, and it would be welcome.

The loss of Canadian fans makes the Sabres small market even smaller. They are not in a good place right now and for anyone wanting Terry to sell, be ready to say bye-bye to the Sabres. No one is spending a billion just to keep the team in Buffalo.

Given the perceived strength of the prospect pool, I thought it was all but universally agreed upon that the Amerks have largely underperformed expectations. They have had huge gaps in their game.

They finished tied for #5 overall in the AHL, and they made the final 8 in the Calder Cup tournament. They made the final 4 two years ago.  How is that underperforming?

Why is there a loss of Canadian fans?

Could not possibly disagree more that the Sabres are going to leave. I'd put the odds at low single digits. They're one of the most historic non-original six teams in a great hockey market, who have recently hosted the draft, World Junior championships, etc. It doesn't matter what a prospective owner would want. It's up to the league, and the continent is out of viable hockey markets.

I believe in Amerks/Rochester fan circles, they have not been pleased with the Pegula era because there has been an unwillingness to spend on AHL vets who typically push teams over the top. It is however, a golden age over the Golisano years of cost-cutting there, sharing with Florida, then bailing.

Has Pegula been a good owner for the Bills?  It is hard to argue against it.

Has Pegula been anything short of an unmitigated disaster into perpetuity for the Sabres?  It is hard to argue against it.

I will say, you can't 'stumble' into success, especially sustained success in the NHL.  Head coaches are not as important nor should be influential.  1 or 2 Players do not move the needle, and there is nobody who would have the same effect as a top-5 franchise QB.  You need to have a competent front office on various fronts.  Amateur scouting, development, pro scouting, and team-building are paramount.

Aren't the Amerks older than the Sabres?

One of the best things about growing up in CNY was having options for your favorite hockey team, that and the chicken riggies.

The problem with selling the Sabres is finding an new owner that a) wants to spend a billion dollars on the team and b) then keep them in Buffalo. With Canadians not crossing the border, that really hurts Sabres attendance even beyond their underperformance the last decade plus. A sale of the Sabres means 99% likely the team moves.

Yup.  That’s the problem with hoping for a new owner.

Hiring a HC against your GM's wishes then firing a HC without consulting your GM is bad ownership. This is a 14 year pattern with Pegula and the Sabres.

That is a really bad excuse for the Pegula run Sabres.

If you didn’t  think much of your GM in the first place…

Yes, the Amerks were founded in 1956. But the Pegulas own them now.

The guy has issues, but he's still the guy who saved the Bills from leaving. The team was ready to skip to Toronto with Bon Jovi and Ted Rogers. It sucks about the Sabres, but we still have the Bills and a new stadium keeping them here because of Terry Pegula.

Then you fire th GM,full stop, you don't rely on yourself and the marketing guy to take over the responsibility.

Pegula has a history of overruling his personnel people in both orgs.

Educate me, what is his history of "overruling Beane and McDemott. all I can think of he was a major supporter of drafting Allen, are you going to hold that against him?

Sorry this thread is absurd, starting in one direction and now just resorting to trashing the owner..

And Terry is on record saying he would not give McBeane as much power as he did if he had the decision again today.  Which is terrifying.

When did Pegula say that? That doesn’t make any sense to me. He gave them control and they turned the Bills into a perennial playoff team and SB contenders. Why would Pegula even say something that stupid?!

Be prepared on Sabre Space. The GDT is about as funny and sarcastic as it gets.

The Sabres have sucked the life out of that Forum.

The mods let a lot of political banter go on back and forth during games which would never happen here, for good reason.

You just have to sift through it, there are definitely some intellectual Sabre fans there, but nothing like TBD posters. Promo is a good example on Sabre's & here.

Sorry, I missed the part where you said that he was overruled in Rex Ryan’s hiring. That’s not what I had heard. He wasn’t involved in Rex Ryan’s firing, but that’s probably because he was on the way out himself after the team failed to progress and his terrible drafts.

Legit question… what was the point / reasoning for PSE to dissolve? What are the benefits of such a move?

PSE has always been a disaster - even when Kim was running the show.

Remember that meeting where Kim told the staff that made $50k/year that their job was to maintain the Pegula's opulent lifestyle, and that they would be fired before the Pegula's would ever think about doing something like cancelling their vacation to Tahiti?

I doubt the Bills go anywhere with the new stadium being constructed.  However, I can only imagine the wrath of fans if they just paid for a new stadium to sit empty.  Time to weld some armor on your Bulldozers..
