I remember going into the Draft thinking we'd end up taking Michael Huff or Haloti Ngata. When Huff went 7, I was like "alright, it's gonna be Ngata then". 

 

When the pick came in as Donte Whitner, my jaw about hit the floor. I couldn't believe it. I liked the pick of John McCargo at the time of the Trade Up. Same for Ashton Youboty in Round 3 and Ko Simpson in Round 4.

 

Little did I know the real victory would be in Round 5 in the form of Kyle Williams.

A top 10 pick at QB with 18 starts in the NFL?

Trey Lance definitely comes to mind. Not only a top 3 pick, but the 49ers had to give up a haul to get to that spot. There must’ve been something going on behind the scenes because I don’t even recall him being that bad, at least not enough to warrant being traded after 4 games with a .500 record and 5/2 TD-INT. If they didn’t luck out w/ Brock Purdy, that entire FO would’ve been canned.
 

The whole situation has always been intriguing to me. If it was a character thing then he wouldn’t be on another team. It’s not his stats because we’ve seen guys like Zack Wilson & Bryce Young put up horrid numbers yet get insane amounts of chances. If anybody has more knowledge about the subject I would be happy to hear.

The lights were too bright and the expectations were too high.. they were calling him a Josh Allen type 

 

All of that was a recipe for disaster

 

 

Lance got hurt and then Purdy took them to the title game. I think if they had a poor season, Lance would have got to another shot

I thought when they traded back into the first round it would be for Nick Mangold, What do I know.

 

Ngata and Mangold would've been a helluva first round.

I have a very hard time understanding why guys like him can't make the transition from college to pro's I get that the game is a bit different and these players are the best of the best but he was no slouch in college and had a arm but it just didn't click I guess ...

 

But he made some money while playing so he's probably not hurting he just has to live a bit more conservatively than say other QB's like Mahomes or Josh .

I was told he could not execute shanahan's offense on schedule consistently and his injury set him back

 

He's the type of guy where every single thing is drawn up.. three step drop back foot hits balls out 

 

If you can't do that consistently you're not his quarterback

 

He was hoping lance would be able to pick up all the West Coast stuff.. while keeping his playmaking ability but it never came to fruition

Didn’t the Bills acquire him in the middle of the week and then start him for the last preseason game so that they didn’t risk injury to any of their QBs? Throw in mostly non-NFL teammates for that last preseason game and that’s not really a fair chance for an honest evaluation, IMO.
