I have a faint memory of listening to a draft podcast in the lead up to him being number 1 when Merril Hoge was talking about how he wasn't very good and people acted like he was crazy.

In fact I just found this clip of him saying the same thing on another show

This guy made a fortune based largely upon a play in college where he wasn’t even blocked.

Tony Dungy said he was 100% the best defensive player since LT.  Then Said he would be just as good.

another reason to never listen to anything tony dungy says about anything.

Trade Epenesa

This would be exactly my strategy.  Sign him to a cheap 1 year prove it deal. Then do everything in your power to get rid ( trade ) AJE.  Let Jadeveon rotate with Joey, Greg & Landon.  That would be a nice mix of young and veteran pass rushers. Clowney is only 1 year removed (2023) of putting up a Leonard Floyd type season.  9.5 sacks, 9 TFL's and 19 qb hits.  The key is dumping Ep.

Clowney vs Mack was a classic case of GMs looking purely at highlights vs production. Hoge nailed this

I think youd be crazy to let go of AJE for Clowney. JMO

I think you'd be crazy to keep playing an obvious underperforming Epenesa.

I mean, ex-Panther, edge rusher, I've heard of him.  What more do you need?

All jokes aside, I'd bring him in as a camp body.  Why not?

Clowney is nearing the end of the line. But he still doesn't go from being a full time starter straight to a "camp body" competing for a spot. Someone will sign him as an off the bench situational pass rusher and guarantee him a roster spot.

Let's compare those sack numbers via snap counts:

2023 Clowney - 9.5 sacks on 654 snaps

2023 Epenesa - 6.5 sacks on 387 snaps

2024 Clowney - 5.5 sacks on 652 snaps

2024 Epenesa - 6.0 sacks on 612 snaps

Then you factor in age - Clowney is 32, Epenesa is 26 (will turn 27 this year). Epenesa also has him on reliability and wear and tear.

Getting rid of Epenesa for Clowney is a downgrade in practically every way except for name value.

He's 32 older but not ancient, he's coming off a season where he had 5.5 sacks in 14 games in what I imagine was a more limited role and he's known to be an effective edge setter. I am sure there's a team out there similar to the Bills in 2023 who missed out on DE's in the draft and signed Leonard Floyd to get some pass rush pop for a year rental. I am sure there is a team that needs a boost at the DE spot. Not only is Clowney not coming off a bad season in 2024 but he's just a year removed from a 9.5 sack season in 2023. He's gonna get a modest sized one year deal unless there's a medical I am unaware of.

He actually played more snaps than anyone on the bills line other than Rousseau, and more than any other pass rusher on the Panthers.  Panthers had the worst defense in the league (points and yards), T-3rd fewest sacks, the lowest pressure rate in the league, the worst rush defense in the league (8 games they gave up more than 200 on the ground), the worst 3rd down defense in the league, 29th in RZ defense ... so I'm not shocked that they wanted to go in a different direction.  You can literally point to anyone that started for them last year and I'm sure there's a reason to replace them.

Can't we all agree that he is not a difference maker? After years of him doing basically nothing in the league and switching teams so often, we should know this by now.
