Jets tried to hire a new OC

Recommended Posts

The media loves to hype up the Jets each year and every season they implode.......If they were in a smaller market, they would be completely irrelevant.

Move along.....nothing to see here.

Shouldn't the thread title be "Jets tried to hire an actual OC"?

Probably around the time when they realized "With a shot of Ayahuasca," wasn't an actual play.

Says you.  I see all sorts of Xs and Os after a shot of that stuff.

I have zero concern over the Jets.......they'll implode again this year, like every season before.

It's one of my favorite parts of the NFL season. Watching Jet fans get way too hyped before the season. Getting way too loud and arrogant. Then the season typically goes like this:

Preseason: "J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS!!!! WE'RE BACK BABY! THIS IS OUR YEAR!!! JOE DOUGLAS...BEST GM IN FOOTBALL....GUY BROUGHT IN SOME STUDS!!! MIKE FREAKING WILLIAMS? AND WE GET RODGERS BACK?!?!? RODGERS SAYS NO MORE DISTRACTIONS!!! LFGGGGGG!!!"

Week 3: "Eh it's just a slow start. Couple guys are hurt. Lots of season left. Hey yous guys see Rodgers on McAfee this week? Said some really weird things again."

Week 4: "Mike Williams got injured? I'm sure he'll only miss a game or two"

Week 6: "WTF are they doing? Why didn't they fix they OL? Brought in a broke down WR who's now on IR and drafted 2 RBs? Man, they need to fire Joe Douglas "

Week 10: "I mean, yeah mathematically we can still win the division...but if we make the playoffs we're the team NO ONE wants to face. By the way, you guys catch any good college games this weekend? Who looks good for the draft next year?"

Week 12: "JUST END THE SEASON. FIRE EVERYONE. CUT RODGERS. WOODY JOHNSON...WORST OWNER IN SPORT. I HATE BEING A JETS FAN. AND MY VIAGRA Doesn't WORK ANYMORE."

I hope no one on this board is still fearful of this 40+ yard head case QB/GM, as many seemed to be when he was signed. Reminded me a lot of the super crazy talk around the country when the Broncos traded for Wilson, that he may help the Broncos become a contender!, giving a king's ransom for a  has-been player Seattle may have waived before the next NFL season began.

I was as happy as can be when the Jets signed him, and have not been disappointed--the joy rodgers and the jets keep on giving seems almost bottomless.

The 2024 jets: A lame duck head coach, a lame duck GM, 'heading' a team that is run by a conspiracy theory promoting,  40 year old, narcissistic head case, clearly on the decline and coming off a major injury...

The Jets just keep on giving and giving and giving to Bills' and fans of other AFC East teams.

I think the Jets might surprise people this year (the roster on paper is good) but it is the case that they've had only one winning season in the past 13 years.

I agree that they will surprise some, but that 'surprise' is something like 6-11, 7-10....

He did OC GB and Rodgers to 3 back-to-back 13-3 seasons where Rodgers had 2 consecutive All-pro and a league MVP.

Yeah Rodgers had a long career with a lot of winning and multiple all-pros before that, but he was also coming off multiple "meh" years and was 38 at that point.

Kind of hard to see Hackett as known trash with that background

Agree that he was hired to attract Rodgers though

Crazy that they have 6 primetime games.  Of course, I believe they are all in the first 11 weeks, just in case.

I saw that as well.

It's the NY market and they have some fairly high expectation for the Jets this year.......every year as well, i suppose.

We all know how this story ends for them.

Hackett wasn’t calling plays. He was an OC in name only. Looking good while Aaron Rodgers is your QB is not difficult

He was hired in Denver because they wanted to trade for Rodgers. He was hired with the Jets because they wanted to trade for Rodgers. After one year, the Jets wanted to move on but can’t because of… Rodgers.

Once Rodgers is done in the NFL, I suspect Hackett will be too

When my Broncos loving friends hired Nate Hackett, I tried to warn them. They accused me of sour grapes and touted his time working with Rodgers.

When the Jets hired Hackett, I tried to warn Jets fans on their message board. They accused me of sour grapes and of having an agenda because I'm a Bills fan, and touted his time working with Rodgers.

I saw all I needed to see when he was OC for the Bills. I admit that OCs can grow and change and get better in time, but Hackett hasn't. He simply can't Hackett in this league.

Hold that thought a moment.

Rodgers has been in the league since 2005, starting since 2008.

That's like a 23 year stretch.

If it's nothing to do with the OC and all to do with Rodgers, the reason Rodgers hasn't looked like that his whole time in Green Bay is ??

The rumor at the time Hackett was OC in Buffalo was that Marrone was putting together the game plan and calling the plays, to the frustration of players and of Hackett himself.

I agree Hackett was promoted beyond his sphere of competence to be HC in Denver, but he did manage to put together a pretty good offensive season in Jax with Blake Bortles as his QB.  So there must be something there.

Logic says that Rodgers wouldn't have the hard-on for Hackett he apparently has, if Hackett didn't bring something offensively valuable to the table.

I really don't want to become a "Hackett apologist", I'm not saying he's all that and a bag of chips, I'm just saying that logically, it's unlikely he's trash.

Hackett has had 10 seasons as an OC or HC.

In those 10 seasons, he has posted 3 top ten finishes in points scored (2 of them with Rodgers as QB).

In the remaining 7 seasons, his offenses have finished: 22nd, 18th, 25th, 31st, 15th, 32nd, and 29th.

So he has shown that if he has an elite QB, he can coordinate a top 10 offense. He did also have a good offensive season with Jacksonville with a bad QB, as you point out. But given that his bad offensive performances with average to bad QBs outweigh his lone good "Bad QB" season six to one, I'd argue that that good season looks more like an abberation.

Give him Aaron Rodgers, and he can call a game. Give him anyone else, and it's statistically very likely that he's going to post a below average season.

I don't think he's good, and I don't think he's going to continue to get OC jobs once Rodgers hangs up his cleats.

There also quite a bit of speculation given Rodgers permanently having one of the limited number of headsets and his body language / talking prior to the snap on the Jets forum(s) that he was defacto coordinator at times throughout the season once he returned from his recovery.

What leads you to believe this? Matt Lafluer has called plays in Green bay since he arrived.
