Thanks coach McDermott… you’re one of the best coaches in the game.

This is great.  It's tough medicine to swallow, but your view on is could very well be true.  Maybe the Bills just weren't good enough.  I think there's something to that.   But I also will say that the Bills inability to play as well as anyone expected coincided with the onset of the emotional disruption.   At the end of the day, there's certainly some truth in both views.

To Beane's credit, he's done what looks like a pretty good job improving the team.  I like the receiver room, I like the additions on the interior of the oline, the additions to the dline.  It's not clear what the answer will be at middle linebacker, but I like the potential.

Both the personnel improvements and the distance from the emotional chaos that was 2022 suggest that the Bills should be a serious contender for the Lombardi.   In a way, it's a serious test for McDermott and Beane.   "You've been through the worst, you have your quarterback, your roster.  Now is the time to show you can do it."

Really nice post Shaw! That's some good reading.

Ignorance is playing doctor from the seat of your living tv.

You have no idea who and what impact that incident played on each Bills player.

Making a blanket statement about PTSD doesn't cut it...

Great point. Everyone deals with trauma differently. To suggest the level of impact on a team is something that's impossible.

I wasn't diagnosing anyone.   All I did was write in response to someone who said that the emotional issues were not relevant; I was pointing out that there was no way he could know that.   I know that's true because I know that a lot of traumatic emotional issues do in fact disrupt the well being of people, traumatic issues like the ones the Bills went through.

You're right, I don't know.  All I know is that the emotional issues coincided with their decline in play.  Was there causation?  I don't know.  But I do know that it's a plausible explanation for their decline.  Or part of the explanation.

I've been on this forum for over a decade and it's always been the same goal: win the super bowl. There are no moral victories. History does not remember the losers or the almost was.

McDermott might be the Marvin Lewis of coaches. Good enough to consistently get into the playoffs but not good enough to win it all. But people don't want to hear that because they are just happy to be here. That's a pretty low bar. If you have a top 5 defense and QB you should be in the super bowl by now. I would hold any team in the league to that standard. The results just are not good enough

The TEAM’S goal is to win the Super Bowl. I am not on the team. We are fans. My goal is to be entertained, and I will be even MORE entertained if we win out and take the SB trophy.  I want a SB victory as much as anyone here, but I will be disappointed, not devastated if they fall short. When I was young I think I gave the Bills outcomes too much power over me. I’m not playing that game any more.

If you think my bar is too low, I think yours is too high. Only ONE team wins every year, and we are fairly new to being in contention. I can’t be outraged if it’s not the Bills.

Again, I REALLY want them to have a chance to play for that trophy, but it won’t erase all the good times along the way if they fall short. We get together with family and friends for games, travel to different venues together, and that is all good stuff to me that doesn’t go away if we don’t win a SB. Who is “the realist” now?

The reality is Allen isn’t the best QB. He’s really good. Kinda like the Bills, really good. Not the best. Your reality doesn’t slap me in the face and I’m not upset. I’m happy if we win a SB, not a negative Nancy if we don’t. Who are “they” and why should I care what “they “ say. The Bills are fun to watch again and I’m really enjoying this run. Sucks that negative Nancies aren’t. Your reality and mine are not the same and that’s ok. By the way, if you’re really out in the real world, it’s actually a nice place. Not everyone poo poo’s positivity. That’s the real world saying hi.

Your negativity towards Allen is dragging me down. Don't poo poo all of the Allen supporters positivity.  Thanks in advance for your cooperation

How many posters here do you think honestly believe Allen is absolutely at the top of the QB mountain? I don’t, but I love that he’s our guy. He’s a great QB, and a great fit in WNY.

There is middle ground here, it doesn’t have to be extreme one way or the other.

Better at what? At what specific moment? What is the down and distance? They have different strengths and weaknesses.  That’s why I won’t say Josh is NOT the best as well, it depends. (It wasn’t Josh’s fault we lost 13 seconds btw, he was a star at the end!) There are a handful with Mahomes, Burrow, Sunshine and the other usual suspects who can all do amazing things.

Different guys fit different cities, and I love Josh in WNY. I am SUPER curious to see how long smug ARod gets along in NYC. I’m not sure the media there is as vicious as it used to be, but it’s not Green Bay, either!

You said you don't believe he's at the top. So who do you have above him is a logical followup

I do not believe there is a better QB in the NFL than Allen. I think he is the best. I have him and Mahomes at the top fyi

That is why I asked the when and where. The Josh hero ball, refusing to check down and some bad turnovers leave room for others in the conversation, for sure. For any given drive or half, several can be incredible, or make people scream at the TV while bordering on stroke levels.

I'm talking about the 2023 NFL season, which QBs would you take over Allen. It's not that difficult a question

It actually IS that difficult of a question, because it can’t be answered properly. Are we trading OLine, weapons, coaches and everything? Defenses? I love Josh, but Andy Reid > Dorsey, so how do we tell anything from that?

I’m not playing that game.

Apparently, Augie needs to know the down and distance, how many timeouts are left, what month it is, what is the temperature and climate conditions, what year it is...  Getting that answer from him reminds me of trying to get a yes or no answer out of a politician on a MSM infotainment show.

I have never seen a poster use the term "entertained" as often as you. It's almost like you're setting up a defense mechanism against being let down by explaining your personal fandom as just "entertain me". I think if you experienced those 90's SB loses where we were in contention every year, you would have a better understanding of how devastating it was to hard core fans like myself. I guess we're just in different tiers of fandom.

I’m not an AM talk show, so I’m not huge on rankings. If you told me you had 3 guys at the top, I think most people would agree and not go crazy over the order.

I hope Burrow gets his money before the Bengals melt down. He’ll get paid, but then I think guaranteed dollars into escrow will be a bit more scarce.

Unfortunately a lot of you guys continuously get slapped in the face with a reality check and it clearly makes you upset. Negative nancies or whatever you want to call it, it's the real world saying hi. If the Bills are so great and McDermott is such a good coach and Allen is the best QB in history, then what do we have to show for it? How many super bowls? When all is said and done I don't think they are going to say the Bills made 1 AFC championship game so they are a great team. They will say the Bills are a joke, wide right and music city miracle and 13 seconds. Nobody outside Buffalo cares about the Bills until they win it all. That's reality

Holy cow. The Bills have only been contenders for a few years. Give them some time to put it altogether. This is a conversation that should be had 3 more years down the road. Is it really worth overhauling the entire regime? The grass isn’t always greener. Luckily QBs routinely play into their late 30s so Allen still has plenty of time, he’ll just have to rely on this arm more as he ages.

Yeah, I was there long before the 90’s, but I did make one of our Super Bowls (In Minny vs Wash - yuck!)

The tiers of fandom you refer to could also be read as states of mind. Priceless, though!  😋

Do you think you get paid if they win? Not happening! You just want to watch it until the final game and be entertained the entire way.

Then the next season starts.

Yeah, I think a lot of it is a state of mind.  I'm really into the Bills, but I can watch and be entertained.   I get anxious before, and I'm frustrated after if they lose, but if they win, I'm just satisfied and waiting for next week.

I live in Connecticut.  This year's NCAA championship was different for me.  It was just a game.   I was excited about the team this year, but it was different from previous years.   It's like I'm just as interested, but I don't live and die with it.

Maybe I'll be different when I get to watch another Super Bowl.

I listen to other people, mostly younger people, and I remember feeling like that they seem to, but it isn't me any more.

It's different states of mind, and the states of mind relate to age and one's perception of the world.   Not saving every older guy has mellowed out; just that some guys do.

The result of the mellower approach is that the ride is more enjoyable.   It's just amazing to have this team, and from this state of mind, it's easy to enjoy it.

I like this.  And to add on to it, even thought it's a McDermott thread, is that I've always thought that although Josh won't ever be Peyton, I think it's quite likely to be, and maybe outperform,  Elway.  They are just so similar in style, athleticism, arm, onfield attitude, everything.  I think Josh is better, physically and pure arm strength, but he's in the same period that Elway was in his career.  He's now being forced to learn, really learn, how to run a game.  It took Elway to the end of his career to put it all together.  If Josh can there in the next couple of years, he'll be fantastic for years.

By year 7 in Elway’s career he had taken the Broncos to 3 superbowls. Granted he didn’t win any of those but 3 chances in the big game is a long ways from where Bills are at presently with Allen.
