Diagnosed with autism

Or autism spectrum disorder as it’s now called.  As more time passes I’m a little more comfortable talking about it.

Will try and not make this too much a LAMP post but thanks to all here who have listened to me through the years….   you know who you are

Ill leave it as while I’m often nostalgic for a lot of stuff in the past, this condition was never really properly understood when I was a kid.  Could have saved me lots of grief but that is what that is.

If you have a child who displays symptoms my advise is still pay whatever money it is to get the best and most thorough evaluations done.  It could go unnoticed otherwise

It is indeed a spectrum, apparently. We know people who are somewhere on there, including my nephew. A good friend’s grandson is about 10 and has all kinds of little quirks (they can’t cut his hair, for one thing), but he’s in gifted classes at school. We are all different….in different ways.

How does this diagnosis change your life?

And how has this affected your life previously?

Short answer is communication and anxiety issues have always plagued me.  I can’t go backwards but at least I have an understanding of why some of that happened.  And things I know to work on going forward.  Ex: interpersonal skills

If you got officially diagnosed was it recently?

Just that the Asperger’s diagnosis went away.  It’s just now called autism spectrum disorder where it’s all lumped into one diagnosis

Nope. My son was diagnosed when he was young.

It’s not hard to add 2 + 2.

I’m constantly misunderstood here ;) 😆

Lacking in Social skills.
Been this way all my life.

It’s a mystery to me. Most of the people we know who are on the spectrum have limitations of some type, but often exceptional skills in other ways. I guess we all play the hand we are dealt.

Best wishes to everyone.

Ahh, many of us have been there over the years. Myself included. Our Bills family is always there for us! We are among friends.

And those other guys, but we’ll ignore them for now.  :)

I was tested under DSM 4 rules, as having OCD and Social Anxiety.  I'm sure under DSM 5 they'd label me with ASD.

I'll admit I don't understand it as much as I should. My next door neighbor has Autism but highly functioning. I may hire him to be my roadie for gigs because I have a S ton of equipment. He's eager to help out.

When you gonna break it too him there's no pot and groupies involved?  Better to be wise and wait till after he moves the ***** load of equipment you have. 😏

Interesting, years back I got the social anxiety diagnosis as well when I first saw a doctor.

It wasn't until I was advised to have a thorough screening done for autism is when it was picked up.  I had to get interviewed as well as my parents.  I had to fill out multiple questionnaires as well.  The whole thing was unpleasant but necessary.  That's why I indicated it's better to have a through check done at a specialist in the original post

high functioning

means you are mentally capable of doing anything that they would want.

just in your own way.

People may experience:

Behavioral: aggression, compulsive behavior, fidgeting, impulsivity, repetitive movements, social isolation, or persistent repetition of words or actions

Mood: anxiety, or apprehension,

not so much — anger. You don’t want to make us angry 😤. 😝

Also common: depression,

intense interest in a limited number of things,

The Buffalo Bills.

learning disability,

ergo college dropout

When it comes to my equipment, I have a very particular and set way of unpacking and packing. I also have a system for loading my car with my gear.

Putting words on paper 📝

it’s like dyslexia but with words

The words make sense to me.

My wife owns a literacy center that specializes in teaching kids and adults that fit the Dyslexia profile how to read. I just read her this and she said that Autism is the opposite of Dyslexia. According to the book "The Dyslexia Advantage", a group of cells called the "minicolums" which are a vertical arrangement of cells from the cortex of the brain, In dyslexic people, the minicolums are spaced widely apart. In Autistic people, they are spaced closely together.

For years it was believed that you couldn't be both Autistic and Dyslexic at the same time. It was only recently that that has been proved to be false.
