DeSantis For President in 2024?

Recommended Posts

how does a law that requires books in schools to be free of pornography; instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity in kindergarten through third grade; and discrimination “in such a way that an individual, by virtue of his or her race, color, sex or national origin, is inherently racist or oppressive, whether consciously or unconsciously.”??  cover those books?  its crazy.

but then again maybe its some districts going overboard trying to interpret the new changes.

The group they are sourcing for that reporting is the PEN America PAC.

Thanks for that Roundy, I think the reason the book(per the linked article) is being looked at is because teachers may use the content about racism to further an agenda to teach all white people are evil racists. But I mean come on, to pretend there was no, and still is racism in this country is ridiculous. Is there now no longer any middle ground?

The linked article gives no specifics on the cuts other than restructuring and non sports content.  But if you want to link one that does, I'll read it.

WSJ (paywalled) explains it nicely. The streaming wars are killing profits, and content production costs are a big part of it too. No indication of any drop off in park attendance, etc. a fundamentally very strong company going forward.
What no analyst is saying: that people are running away from Disney because of its political stances.
These political backlash/boycott things almost never work. Either way. I remember the Chick-fil-a fallout that was supposed to ruin them. They’re doing just fine.

Teaching about how a famous baseball player experienced prejudice and racism? CANT HAVE THAT!!

From the Buffalo News article.

Clemente's son reacts

Roberto Clemente Jr., Clemente's oldest son, said he initially was taken aback after learning that the book was removed from school shelves.

But after researching the issue and then rereading the book, which he owns, he said he is "not really going to fuss about it."

Referring to a part in the book where the Pirates legend said he encountered discrimination because he was Black and Puerto Rican, Clemente Jr. said, "I think that statement is where they had that issue."

Clemente Jr., who lives in the South Hills, added:

"If you have a child who does not see color on anyone and you're going to now plant that seed that we are a different color, that is where I agree 100%. We are the same as far as I am concerned. We are all the human race."

"I would teach my son about racism because I went through it personally. But putting that issue out there in school, especially with very young children, opens the door to how teachers could possibly use it for their agenda."

Amen sir, THAT is how a MAN reacts to this.

Sorry your weak-ass Desantis attack was undone in your own post

As a white kid growing up in Buffalo who hit reading age a few years after MLK was assassinated, I learned about civil rights and life in the pre-civil rights South by reading biographies of sports stars. Hank Aaron, Satchel Paige, and others. I think some of them actually used the “n” word in describing their experiences in the old South. I would hate to see books like that taken off library shelves. They taught me some valuable lessons.

I agree with you sir, my experience was the same.

But in today's world of activism, school libraries should be conscious of what books are available for certain ages, because (unfortunately) there is increasing indoctrination as opposed to education.

Sad, but true.

In either case, the attempt to use this as some type of example why Ron Desantis is a "bad" man is transparent and wrong.

Great points. but the thing that stuck out the most is those schools must have sucked if you never were taught that.  Especially as this state was a hot spot for the suffrage and abolitionist movements.

Kinda reenforces the fact NYS schools lead the nation in cost and dropouts. not much else.

Absolutely I should’ve been taught that in school, in addition to my extracurricular reading. Later on I ordered a Scholastic book (anyone remember those?) about Frederick Douglass, and that one also made a big impression on me.
I don’t agree with the “ban woke curricula” thing just as much as I don’t agree with the “ban Hank Aaron’s autobiography because he writes out the N word when he says what fans were yelling at him. This ban stuff is crazy. So are some school boards. I’m glad I learned about the embarrassing stain on America’s rise alongside learning about the tremendous vision of our founding fathers. But I am one of a shrinking number who seem able to handle the good with the bad.

I still remember a middle school tour of the Douglas Zion church with a Douglas actor doing a remake of his speech. it stuck.

Now of days that would probably not make it to any curriculum.

We are doing this wrong.

Plan to collect menstrual data on high school athletes in Florida is voted down

February 9, 2023 1:53 PM

(A vote ?  oh no !  )

The Florida High School Athletic Association's board of directors has voted 14-2 to remove questions about high school athletes' menstrual history from a required health form for participation in high school athletics.

Thursday's emergency meeting focused on the debate around menstrual cycle information.

The vote comes after weeks of controversy surrounding questions on the medical form, which is typically filled out by a physician and submitted to schools. The board approved a recommendation by the association's director to remove the questions, which asked for details including the onset of an athlete's period and the date of that person's last menstrual cycle.

Here’s something we missed in our House Oversight Committee meeting coverage Wednesday. Rep. Maxwell Frost of Florida, who’s best known for being only 26 and a sitting congressman, is trying to make himself known as the next AOC: loud, liberal, and underinformed. Florida’s Voice reports that Frost suggested during Wednesday’s committee meeting that the committee bring in Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who’s been abusing his power to limit free speech.

Florida’s Voice reports:

During the GOP House Oversight Committee meeting Wednesday, Rep. Maxwell Frost, D-FL, floated the idea of bringing in governors, such as Gov. Ron DeSantis, to testify for “limiting free speech.”

The hearing is the House Oversight and Accountability Committee’s “first step in examining the coordination between the federal government and Big Tech to restrict protected speech and interfere in the democratic process.”

Haley? No.   Pence? No.   Pompeo? No.   Sununu? No.

I don't know, I'm gonna hear what they all have to say for themselves first.  I definitely don't want President Trump.  While I think Governor DeSantis  can win the nomination I'm not so sure he can win the general.  He's gone too overboard on the culture stuff. Democrats are better at this stuff than him and will eat him alive.

Way too early to call for me.

“Just cede the culture war, democrats are way better at it.”

Politics are downstream of culture. You can’t win at politics without gaining ground in the culture war. Between that and election “fortification” republicans can’t beat the democrats in a meaningful election at the moment. Your attitude is why republicans are Losers.
