That actually helps the refs make their point: that they can overturn stuff when they feel like without the PI video review. It was so easy for the XFL to implement a simple video booth review process. The NFL just can't get out of its own way....or doesn't want to.... UConn James Posted May 9, 2020 Share Posted May 9, 2020 The only way to make it workable would be to send video to NY and have the head of officiating in a sealed room, given no context about what the situation or ruling on the field was, and give an overarching verdict of the proper call. The refs and their union HATED this rule and did everything they could to give a big middle finger to the competition committee and the fans. They want to have that control to change the course of a game with a single call, and in my heart of hearts, I believe the league gives them direction to favor some teams / players, and to keep games close so teevee ratings stay high. 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I think Kmart means All Riveron and company deliberately caused the failure of the rule by refusing to overturn obvious bad calls on the field. This perspective, which I also hold, suggests that the referees had motivation to see the challenge rule fail because it was a threat to their power. They used common sense when they nullified the turnover on the second half Kick-Off of the Wild Card game. Screwed us out of points but watching it live I knew they had to overturn it. It does open up the can or worms though of what do you do if a guy drops the ball intentionally just before crossing the goal line? Historically that's always been a turnover. What is obviously missing now is offensive holding replay. Uncalled offensive holding can change an entire game.
