I have watched, hear, and read multiple times how the Bills defense gets very little pressure and almost no sacks from either D end position:  Hughes and Edwards COMBINED

have like 3 sacks, and the Bills have been playing a powder puff schedule.  They have also been giving up large number in the rush defense area.

Are you seriously mistaking Trent Murphy with Trent Edwards right now?  You MUST be from California

If the production does not improve, he will most likely be asked to restructure or released.  We know how this goes.  To the OP, they are going to do anything in the season, so save it for the offseason.

His $7M salary next year is guaranteed so I can’t see him restructuring that...

2021 could be a different story though..

They need 2 DE’s this offseason as they are looking thin at the position..

I just looked at SPOTRAC for Hughes contract: $14 MIL this year?  I am reading this correctly?

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/buffalo-bills/jerry-hughes-6540/

WHY are the Bills paying Jerry Hughes $14 mil this year?!?  He's basically invisible that I can tell.

  • 1. Rams defensive lineman Aaron Donald: $22.5 million
  • 2. Cowboys defensive lineman Demarcus Lawrence: $21 million
  • 3. Chiefs defensive lineman Frank Clark: $20.8 million
  • 4. Lions defensive lineman Trey Flowers: $18 million
  • 5. Saints defensive lineman Cameron Jordan: $17.5 million
  • 6. 49ers defensive lineman Dee Ford: $17 million
  • 7. Browns defensive lineman Olivier Vernon: $17 million
  • 8. Eagles defensive lineman Fletcher Cox: $17 million
  • 9. Falcons defensive lineman Grady Jarrett: $17 million
  • 10. Texans defensive lineman J.J. Watt: $16.7 million

He may be the most overpaid D lineman in the league?

Did you just pick the highest number you saw instead of researching?

Jerry Hughes is not a "very good" player.  He's had one season of 10 sacks.  A DE getting about 5 sacks per year is not a "very good" player.  At least he isn't getting stupid penalties any more.  I agree with OP.  His contract is insane and he is invisible on the field.  His only really successful years were when he also had Mario, Kyle, and Marcel (who was good at the time) taking much of the blocking.  He was 4th best of those guys during those years.

Did you think he was invisible on the field last season?

Good for you for getting ratio-d to death and sticking to it.

But there is a reason for the ratio. That contract was signed a couple years ago. It is not unusual for players at the end of their contracts and careers to not produce at the level they are getting paid.  Its part of the bargain. Now, if youre asking why he isn't cut, that would depend on the cap hit and who we have to replace him. Both of those lend themselves to keeping him.

Also, he is a huge leader and he and his wife are really tight with JA.

Hughes got extended the last offseason..

The consensus at the time was that it was deserved..

many of you including the OP are forgetting you all have no idea what is being asked of them on any given play. Yes, a DE's job is to create pressure and get sacks but if he is getting asked to fill a gap or seal an edge his job isn't to go full tilt towards the QB. In obvious pass plays, yes he is probably being told to do that, but unless you are right there in the coaches and player meetings none of us know for certain what his job is each play.

According to the same site, his average salary is ranked 19th in the league for his position....how is that overrated?  Actually seems pretty accurate.  He's the probably the only person on Bills who other coaches actually scheme for...is he putting up the numbers he has in the past?  No, but I would argue he is still a disruptive player.  And as others have said, the Bills have plenty of cap space, they weren't signing a top pass rusher this past offseason, and his numbers drops significantly next year.

I don’t think his job has changed much from last season.

single year cash outlay isn’t the best metric on his pay rate compared to others.

It doesn’t even matter. He was our only pass rusher. Why would we let him walk and have zero pass rushers for a few extra dollars in cap when we have $80M?

This topic should be burned alive.

You may be right, but we don't know anything for sure. Maybe he is having a down year or just maybe he is being asked to do something different this year. again, we just don't know.

Because that is the contract amount he and the Bills agreed too so he signed the contract.
