They have been doing this for many many years, they are always giving out something (towels, cards, whatever) before games.

I realize.  And it has always been very Minor League to me. They do this at minor league events in order to draw in casual fans who would otherwise stay home.  With only eight home games each year, it's hard to believe they have to give things away to get people to attend an NFL game. (I realize some of this is 'free' promotion for the givers, but most of it ends up in a landfill.)

Minor league baseball has bring you pet days, Star Wars or Super Hero nights, and a bunch of ridiculous promotions to fill the stands.  This is just giving away small items, don't over think it.  There's nothing wrong with it.

...the oldtimers would remember the late Bill Veeck and his MLB stunts like the midget pinch hitter......

Perhaps the most fascinating story was about Eddie Gaedel, the midget Bill Veeck sent to the plate as a pinch hitter.

It was Veeck`s best-known stunt. It occurred Aug. 19, 1951, 40 years ago next month. The 3-foot-6-inch Gaedel, playing for the St. Louis Browns and wearing uniform No. 1/8, popped out of a papier-mache cake and batted for leadoff man Frank Saucier in the first inning of the second game of a double- header. Gaedel drew a four-pitch walk. Jim Delsing ran for him.

It’s the same crap they give away every single year

I'm sure that you're right.  But...does anyone re-work their schedule, or a plan a trip to WNY, so that they're in the Stadium for one of these give-aways?  I really doubt it.  It's always seemed to me that people go to an NFL because (a) they're a season ticket holder (b) they specifically want to see an opponent (c) the want a nice weather game.    I can't imagine anyone is going for the give-away.  Doesn't make it good or bad.  It just makes it......

The team actually makes money off this via sponsorships. My kids are looking forward to the Bills sunglasses Sunday.

They play the Syracuse Salt Potatoes this Saturday, in Syracuse.

Duel of the Dishes!

The Syracuse Salt Potatoes will take on the Rochester Plates in an epic showdown. The Plates are a staple in the Rochester & Western NY area but they have nothing on our salty, buttery, delicious potatoes from CNY. The Salt Potatoes & the Plates will face off in Rochester on June 21st for the first round of this duel. After each mach up, the winning team will be presented with the Golden Fork - a 6 ft. representation of the greatest food creation from the Empire State.

    • Salt Potato Bobblehead Giveaway
  • The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a Salt Potato Bobblehead standing on a Rochester Plate, presented by Embassy Suites. The bobblehead is a physical representation of the Salt Potatoes superiority over the Rochester Plates. Do not miss out on your chance to show Rochester who is best!
