What would a modern civil war even look like?

Recommended Posts

Some I've spoken to entertain romantic thoughts of a polarized Left vs. Right conflict that would split the country in two, but I can't see that at all.

Mostly because the U.S. features too many competing factions for them to be condensed into two diametrically opposed sides.

In fact,  -If I wanted to engineer a country immune to large-scale civil conflict, it would look a lot like the good-old  U. S. of A !

328 million people all trying to make it home from work early... It's a competitive environment... Relatively high cost of living with a  good, stable, economy.

It has a large immigrant population, a racially integrated workforce,  good infrastructure, and access to goods and services.  -Who'd wanna f__k that up?

If anything, a U.S. civil war would be triggered by some catastrophic event.. -Outbreak of a pathogen, natural disaster, -or military coup....

Bottom line:  -The political/economic climate is too stable to be conducive to anything like a real war.

While this isn't an exact representation of the American political spectrum, it offers some perspective.

Radical left, far left, left, center-left, centrist, center-right, right, libertarian, far right, evangelicals, alt-right.

I can see upheaval, ugliness, incivility, and yes, violence. -But a Blue vs. Gray type war???

-You're gonna have to sell me on it

It wouldn't be pretty for the left, Republicans have all the guns, while the left wants to outlaw them all.

Pretty simple.

Won't be pretty if Republicans become pissed off to the point where they have to use their weaponry.

Civil War will not end nicely for Democrats.

I have relatives in Canada, so I am safe if war breaks out.

Safety? -In a time of open war?

Whatever dystopian epoch emerges from the ashes of old-America probably wont be worth living in.

And if you think Canada won't be affected, you're daydreaming.

Texas here I come.and out the West back door to escape route into the towns and hills of New Mexico and Arizona.I

Might even get a stealth 22.

I doubt it could happen on a continental scale... Although, a civil war in Texas seems likely at some point.

An actual civil war will swing whatever way the US military goes (including the various state national guards).

The two worst scenarios would be if they stay on the sidelines, allowing people to fight it out themselves; or - even worse - if the military splits and fights itself.

However, the most we're likely going to see is idiots rioting and destroying their own homes and neighborhoods in protest of something stupid, before they get cordoned off/run out of things to break.

Because of Trump.................some people can't even open jars,

Seriously , if we are comparing, the actual battles would all be in the blue states, just as the majority of the " American Civil War I" was in the South

It wouldn't last long.

Our economy is doing well and our food supply is more than adequate from the majority of people to resort to violence.  The only "civil war" you'll see are extreme factions on opposite ideological sides getting in more skirmishes throughout the country (similar to Charlottesville and Berkeley).

I wish I could agree with you. The way I see it is that what's happening nowadays is similar to the beginnings of what happened in Germany in the 1920's. You have a strong, ultra-leftist element (that is thankfully a small minority thus far) - see antifa and the like - that continues to use violence to forward their agenda.

The angry, socialist left doesn't give a crap about how well the economy is doing. All they need to do is say that in a good economy, people may be well off, but those at the top are reaping the wealth created by the working class in a disproportionate fashion. That's been their mantra for generations, and that will not change.

Today's militant left are NOT liberals. They're anything but liberal. They need to go away, and the sooner, the better.

If that is what you are going to use for protection, don't bother. You might as well get yourself a bat and save some money.

Kent State and a Greenwich home blowing up during an attempt to make a bomb ended the last time anything came close to civil war

and today isn’t even an anthill compared to the Everest of those days

It will look like a few Tim McVeighs getting together, killing a bunch of innocent children and the rest of the country rallying around law enforcement to clean them out. A few pockets of resistance might be found that would then be burned out, and the yelling, accusations and court cases would follow. That would be it.

I agree with this. Even if someone fires a gun at one of those skirmishes what do people think will actually happen next? Masses of people aren’t going to meet on a battlefield like the old school battles of the civil war and fight each other. The police and military would never allow it. We would see blockades and curfews almost immediately. Riot police and the National guard would get in the middle. I guess some people think rural factions will try to go to inner cities and have a shooting war, or vice versa. Good luck with that. Those people in those militias would be stopped with force or arrested and the “war” is over. The two fringe extremes on each side are the ones causing violence. 90% of Americans don’t give a **** and just want to live their life.

Now if our government ever oppressed us enough for us to reach our breaking point, and we actually rallied together as one, I could see us having a civil war but even that is unlikely to ever happen in modern times.

Civil War in the West have erupted when things have been going well.

its like LBJ looking at Watts on the TV wondering how this could happen after all he had done for them
