2018 NFL Scouting Combine - NFL Network Final Day Coverage at 9 AM ET with DB Drills

Recommended Posts

One of the first bits of business involved with the 2018 season is the Scouting Combine, which will be held in Indianapolis from February 27-March 5. Players will work out and meet with teams as the pre-draft process begins to heat up ahead of April’s draft in Dallas.

On Tuesday, the NFL announced that 326 players have been invited to participate in this year’s combine. Not all of those players will be picked as the draft doesn’t have that many selections and there are usually players who don’t get the combine nod that find their way into the draft through Pro Day workouts or other avenues.

There are 19 quarterbacks headed to Indy, including Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Josh Allen, Baker Mayfield and Lamar Jackson. Some may opt to hold off on full workouts until later in the process, but the interviews and meetings will be just as important given the kind of commitment teams would be making by drafting them at the top of the first round.

2018 NFL Combine: Prospects with the most on the line in Indianapolis

Yes, film trumps all ... but the NFL Combine matters. It's the only time when prospects can be easily compared -- both to other prospects in their class and those who came before them -- on a level playing field.

If an NFL evaluator has two nearly identical grades on a receiver but wideout A runs a 4.46 and wideout B runs a 4.52 ... well, you probably can guess which player tends to move up the board.

And as always, there are a plethora of prospects who will make or break their draft stock at this year's combine.

These 10 prospects have the most riding on the athletic exhibition in Indianapolis.

Joshua Jackson, CB, Iowa
James Washington, WR, Oklahoma State
Calvin Ridley, WR, Alabama
Hercules Mata'afa, DL, Washington State
Ronald Jones II, RB, USC
Rashaan Evans, LB, Alabama
Harold Landry, EDGE, Boston College
Leighton Vander Esch, LB, Boise State
Christian Kirk, WR, Texas A&M
Marcus Davenport, DE, UTSA

Each year there are prospects with longer to-do lists than others as they head to Indianapolis for full medical evals, on field testing and the all-important formal interviews with clubs. Here’s a look at some of the more anticipated storylines at this year’s pre-draft showcase.

1 – QB Mason Rudolph may not fully participate
2 – Largest pool ever
3 - Crucial medical evaluations
4 – New position grouping, new testing
5 – Speed to burn?

I need Danny Etling's agent in my life. How the fudge did he swing an invite?

My guess is they brought Etling and Tanner Lee to test DB's ability to catch erratic throws and quickly run for a pick six.

The must-see events at the 2018 NFL combine

By CONOR ORR February 27, 2018

Indianapolis is an enjoyable city any time of year. But every winter it transforms for this strange NFL convention, the place to be in late February/early March if you’ve ever wanted to see an NFL offensive line coach drinking Yuengling at a Dick’s Last Resort after midnight, or a high-profile agent huddling with a cap management executive over a $30 Caesar salad at Don Shula’s steakhouse.

But from a practical standpoint, anyone with an interest in football loves this time of year in Indy because it’s the beginning of two very important periods of the NFL calendar: draft speculation and the free agency speculation.

Not only are the top prospects for the upcoming draft on display, but most of the NFL’s 32 general managers and head coaches will speak with reporters—in complete generalities. Their desire not to tip any of their offseason plans fuels the tireless minds who believe their favorite team can accomplish anything. To those getting ready to hunker down for more than 70 hours of football, here’s what to watch for at this year’s NFL combine (all times Eastern):

For even some of the most proven players entering the NFL draft, the scouting combine can be a critical juncture for answering pressing questions.

Giving teams cause for concern during an on-field workout, interview or medical evaluation could be the catalyst for a slide on draft day.

Here are 10 players with something to prove at this year's combine:

1. Josh Allen, QB, Wyoming
2. Lamar Jackson, QB, Louisville
3. Nick Chubb, RB, Georgia
4. Courtland Sutton, WR, SMU
5. James Washington, WR, Oklahoma State
6. Connor Williams, OT, Texas
7. Arden Key, DE, LSU
8. Marcus Davenport, DE, Texas-San Antonio
9. Harold Landry, DE/OLB, Boston College
10. Maurice Hurst, DT, Michigan
