Dont forget that our o-line was hurting if i recall. Fina was hanging on by a thread, Hicks as well... We should have won of course but that was as far as we were going. Yet Flutie never should have been benched. Good old Ralph...

Hick wasn't in for the game or if he was he was out of position as pretty certain Marcus Spriggs was in that game.

What? Since they benched Flutie how many playoff wins? What are your criteria for what's "best for the franchise"?

They better have made a better move this time!

He got hurt. I believe there may also have been an interior guy hurting also. I do remember well that the o-line was in real bad shape...

"Scoreboard" is a weak way to argue. Look at the context and consider that football is a game with 22 moving parts on any play. Flutie did enough to win against a far superior opponent than the 1999 TN D; Johnson performed horribly against a middling defense.

Expand

1999 Bills 24 th in pass attempts

                   19 in Yards passing

                    2  in rushing attempts

                     8 in yards rushing.

The mediocre Titans D Held The:

     # 4 Colts Off. To 16 points

     # 7 Jags Off. To 14 points

     # 1 Rams Off. To 23 points

Flutie like Tyrod Taylor needed to go as neither were ever going to take my favorite team to the promised land.

How did that work out?

Teams win games. Look at RG3 and Kapernick. They both made the playoffs and had good runs. But were on good teams. Look at Flaco and Eli. Good teams make their QBs look better. Maybe this will workout but but I’m not a fan of the timing.

Flutie never won a playoff game despite a lot of undeserved chances.

Oh, am I counting all the make-believe playoff wins he would have had if he started that game?

Hmmmmm, is there a co-relation between worshiping Doug Flutie and demanding that Tyrod stay in ?

Doctor?

the announcement today and Flutie's benching caused me to stop still and my eyes went real wide and i was shocked, has happened maybe 5 times in 40 years over sports

then i started smiling over the pure justice of it all

Exactly.

I wasn’t singing the praises of Rob Johnson.

In retrospect he was clearly a bum.

But, when it’s time to move on and it happens hope springs anew.

RG3 got hurt and they put him back out there when he was clearly unable to play, disgusting

Kap just suddenly snapped, mostly in his head, and wasn't able to play at his best anymore, you could probably pinpoint the exact second it happened like when Lisa broke Ralph's heart

The Flutie move BURNED exactly the right people that I was hoping it would. Quite enjoyable and it still isn't over with based on responses here...  :D

The point was Tyrod is JP Losman or EJ. He’s got enough skill to win in the right situation. We don’t know what Peterman is. We are position to draft a QB in the first round next year. Why not let Tyrod ride it out and trade or cut him next year. Being a 1st QB in and hand him the reigns?

The move had to happen.

If we've learned anything, it's that history repeats itself, if given the opportunity.

The Bills got to 4-2 last year and went down hill.

We also remember the other midseason collapses.

Tyrod plateaus by midseason. It's time to start a spark with peterman.

I support the move. I just don’t see how there will be enough therapists in Buffalo if peterman doesn’t put up Brady numbers.

This isn’t about playoffs for me. This is about seeing what we have over a decent period of time to plan for next years draft.

If he is GOOD. That would be awesome but I definitely reserve judgement a t this point.

? - A low number of passing attempts is not a bad stat!

Re the Titans, look at the whole picture instead of cherry picking -- i.e., the whole season.

Anyway, the Bills offense was not great in 1999. No one is arguing that. It was *average*  on the top line stats -- 16th in yards, 11th in points. It was 7th overall in offensive DVOA, however. Irrespective of Flutie's flaws, though, there is the much bigger issue of Rob Johnson: a physically talented but terrible QB his entire post-high school career.

Bolded, underlined. for emphasis.

If Flutie was not on the 1999 team, we don't even make it to that wild card game. Johnson would have set the record for sacks in a single season.  I was not a huge Flutie fan, but he was clearly our best option at the time.  I always was pulling for the Dough Boy to get a shot.

The 1999 Titans D was 25th in passing yards allowed, 27th in passing yards given up, and 20th in net yards/attempt allowed. They were 15th in points allowed and 17th in yards allowed.  Yet Rob Johnson was 10-22 for 131 yards passing and took 6 sacks.

The 1998 Miami defense was 1st in points allowed, 3rd in yards allowed, 1st in INTs, and 3rd in NY/A.

Yet Flutie lit them up like an Xmas tree (21/36 for 360 yards and 4 rushes for 29 yards) and Moulds had a career day (despite fumbling a perfectly thrown bomb that he had caught and which probably cost the Bills 7 points and hence the game).

Let's stick to the facts.

Facts? In that game, Flutie threw an INT from inside the red zone (he did that a lot), and he was strip-sacked to end the game because he HELD ONTO THE BALL TOO LONG!
