Ragland isn't going to be on this team at the end of preseason. He simply doesn't fit the scheme and he offers nothing on special teams, making it extremely unlikely he sticks with this team.

My guess is he'll be traded in the next week or so. I imagine they're working the phones pretty hard in the coming days with teams who run a 3-4 defense.

Unless they can trade him to ESPN they are out of luck. Rex is the only one that ever wanted him. In fact, Rex thought he was the best player on the team.

Then they'll cut him.

Ragland never fit McDermott's D. He needs LBs who can run and cover, and those are the things Ragland is weakest at.

Ragland is a two down, 3-4 ILB. We can probably trade him, but if we can't his lack of special teams value will seal his fate.

They may need to shut him down for "injury" reasons to protect his confidence. Not good.

Probably the worst thing you could do for him. He didn't practice for over a year... he's not going to get better sitting for another year.

You end up doubling the cap hit if you cut him, and creating a huge depth issue in 2018. Splitting that cap hit with next year - you'll have 1.5 million less to spend, and 3 free agents in Humber, Hodges, and Brown.

Who cares.

Ragland is borderline useless for this defense because he can't execute the way we need our MLB to execute at that position.

Keeping a guy who doesn't help us because it'll cost $1.5 mil is a really weak argument for why we should keep someone.

They are not cutting him. There is a depth issue.

and for a 1.3M cap hit provides decent enough depth.

Cut him and your on the hook for 2.5M in cap

So you lose some depth and 1.2M by cutting him

Just because Ragland has a pulse doesn't make him "depth".

He's on the third team for a reason, and he offers nothing on special teams.

3rd stringers who can't cover punts and kicks don't make NFL rosters...

He will stay on.

Where he should be playing though is behind Lorax, then you can use his rush ability in the 4-3 over and under looks. He is very similar skill set to Lorax and will provide you some depth behind him. That is where the value is for him on this team

He doesn't have to dress on gamedays... but you are jumping the gun here. You don't know what you have in the guy yet to determine making a financially irresponsible decision.

Its surprising that they haven't given him a look there.

Again, backup linebackers MUST provide value on special teams, and Ragland is useless in that area.

You don't keep backup linebackers who can't play special teams.

Losing a few mil in cap space is hardly a financially irresponsible decision, especially if there are better players who you can keep ahead of him.

Teams all across the NFL are going to cut players who cost them cap space in the coming weeks. That's life in the NFL.
