PatsFanNH
Whoever the Bills hire as a HC they need give him a minimum of 3 years. Why? YEAR 1 -- all past HC guys with (if your GM is able) a few their guys from their old team YEAR 2 - have 2 drafts and year 1 class SHOULD be ready and able to provide a real core for the team. YEAR 3 - mostly their team with draft picks and FA pick ups. Now a lot of this assumes Whaley or whoever the GM is works with the HC to make a better team for his scheme. PatsFanNH
That will depend on who they hire IMO if they keep firing or getting coaches quiting every couple years it's only going to get worse rather than better. fridge
If Rex got another full year to fully install "his team" and system we would be much further behind than we are today. All the coaches are his cronies. The drafts were clogged up with picks for his system. You need a coach that doesn't need players to fit a specific role, but rather a coach that can just adjust to the players on the roster.

fridge
Also - it's so easy for a Pats fan to chime in, they have the longest tenured coach in the league. It's been 17 years since you even had to think about what is needed in a head coaching candidate. Of course in a perfect world you want 3 years for your head coach at a minimum. You also need to make sure that the coach, the players already on the roster, and the GM are all on the same page about what type of team to build. Rex was never the right fit. Not the other way around. Unfortunately Rex is in a position where Defense is supposed to be his specialty. So he cant keep blaming the DC. Its his system. And they got even worse in year 2. So if you cant blame the DC, then Rex has to go. Being objective here.

DrDawkinstein
I'll take your idea a step or two further and say "The next HC needs 10 years". That's right, TEN. Not to make the playoffs. They should be able to do that within the first 2 years. But when reviewing the candidates, we should be looking for someone we can lock onto for the next 10 years. Much like Dallas did with Jason Garrett. Jones has stuck with Garrett through some hard times, and it is paying off now and will pay off in the future. We need a young (40s-50s), offensive minded, qb-centric HC who can roam our sideline for the next decade+. This is why, while I love the idea of Tom Coughlin as the man who can beat the Pats, I don't want him as HC. At 70, he only has 1-3 years left. Kelly the Dog
IMO if they keep firing or getting coaches quiting every couple years it's only going to get worse rather than better. It's ridiculous imo to just make a blanket statement. Each coach is different. Rex was a unique entity. I was for the hire originally. But the ONLY reason you hire Rex Ryan is to get an exotic blitzing defense that no one knows where the players are coming from or when which puts tremendous pressure on the QB and causes mistakes. That is literally the only reason you hire him. Rex didn't even play his own defense here. We were rushing three guys half the plays. And we never got the Rex Ryan defense. He screwed it himself. So he had to go in two years. But it was a specific unique situation. Few coaches are like Rex Ryan. I don't think the Marrone incident had anything to do with the Rex Ryan case whatsoever. MAJBobby
In the modern Free Agent NFL you dont get nor need 3 years to show improvement. You should show improvement year 2 expecially in your area you claim to be a genius in.

Rex inherited a team on the cusp with a great D, and it has completely regressed.
Nitro
They said after Chan was fired...3 years to rebuild....Marrone left after 2. They fooled themselves into thinking Rex would finish what Marrone started. Rarely does a HC continue what his predecessor did. They want to things their way with players that fit the system. So restart the rebuild. Locals did not see this. Being a fan whe moved outside of WNY, I saw what Rex was going to do and knew it was another 3 year rebuild. His mouth wrote checks that his team could not cash. Now the Bills will restart a rebuild that started 4 years ago. This how franchised get mired in the bottom tier of the NFL. Who ever they hire will have to be aware that he has only 2 years.

Id almost guarantee if Rex's defense was dominating and it was the offense that was severely sputtering, Rex would be coaching the Bills year 3 Even if he finished 8-

They regressed more on defense after all excuses eliminated. Thats what cost him his job

machine gun kelly
Exactly. When things are going wrong as a sales director in medical device, you cut your losses and move on. This was going wrong for awhile. With a traditional coach like Dan Quinn, or even Todd Bowles, you give him time. I know it looks bad for Bowles, but I wouldn't give up on him yet. Quinn had a bad fat yearut looked what he did his year. Look at Jack Del Rio. Not a great first year, but had a plan. Rex was a buffoon. We need to a better job of hiring the right coach, and then truly give him time. These blunders after two years were horrible.
