Trump foreign policy

The top British general in the US-led coalition against Isis has said there is no increased threat from Iranian-backed forces in Iraq or Syria, directly contradicting US assertions used to justify a military buildup in the region.

Hours later however, his assessment was disowned by US Central Command in an extraordinary rebuke of an allied senior officer. A spokesman insisted that the troops in Iraq and Syria were on a high level of alert due to the alleged Iranian threat. The conflicting versions of the reality on the ground added to the confusion and mixed signals in a tense part of the Middle East.

They'll be fine. This is what they want as much as what the world needs.

(for clarity the bottom picture is a joke -- since there are those who lack senses of humor)

Trump's going to bring peace and prosperity to Iran?  Ha ha ha! He can't even keep staff in his own WH! He still doesn't even have a Defense Secretary but he will create a modern Iran. Ya sure!

This is wag the dog.

Not Trump.

The people of Iran are doing it themselves.

(With some assistance -- from multiple western allies.)

Iran, post Mullahs and their proxies, is key to any hope of long term stability in the region. If there's ever to be stability there, true peace, it has to come from within. The Iranian people are on the precipice of getting their country back from the extremists without the need for an outside intervention (war/"peace keeping"/regime building). We should be supporting their cause -- because it's our cause too.

The only good Iran is an Iran that doesn't exist.

Don't we remember them chanting "Death to America"?

The people are good, it’s the theocracy running the country

That is horrific

“We are aware of their presence clearly and we monitor them along with a whole range of others because of the environment we are in,” General Ghika said.

But he said, “No, there has been no increased threat from Iranian-backed forces in Iraq or Syria.”

Intelligence and military officials in Europe as well as in the United States said that over the past year, most aggressive moves have originated not in Tehran, but in Washington — where John R. Bolton, the national security adviser, has prodded President Trump into backing Iran into a corner.

One American official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss confidential internal planning, said the new intelligence of an increased Iranian threat was “small stuff” and did not merit the military planning being driven by Mr. Bolton. The official also said the ultimate goal of the yearlong economic sanctions campaign by the Trump administration was to draw Iran into an armed conflict with the United States.

Dislodging an entrenched government isn't something you do easily. And a hundred thousand troops means nothing. What's the point? Are we going to invade or just bomb them? The Iranian people are in no position to throw off their oppressors

Nobody is trying to do that. It's already been explained to you that Iran has a government separate from the Mullahs. Are you incapable of learning...………………………………………………………………………………………………………..anything?

I answer questions all the time.

I'm sure you answer your momma when she asks you if you wiped, washed your hands and turned the bathroom fan on. Other than that, if you don't skirt around questions here you just flat out ignore them.

I get asked so much I can't answer all the questions, many of which are just silly questions based upon Trumpian propaganda.

Maybe if your mother could trust you she wouldn't have to ask all those questions whenever you take a dump.

I sympathize with your mother. Does she also have to remind you to wash your hands before dinner?

The Trump administration has accused Iran of supporting “imminent attacks” on U.S. personnel in the region but has provided no details or evidence.

The Iranians don't strike me as irrational Jihadists.   Even in the worst case sceario of the Iranians pulling off some sort of Tet offensive and catching us off guard in Baghdad (taking hostages) and/or in the Strait (sinking a ship),  to what end?  Where is the victory in that for them?  I think the price for that would be the complete dismantling of their military and infrastructure by the US Navy and Air Force and giving the Israelis and Saudis a green light to wipe out all their proxies by any means they deem fit.

You're espousing a Clausewitzian view in a non-Clauswitzean world.

My guess is that if Iran can use their proxies to provoke a military response from us, short of a full US-led invasion, the mullahs can rally the Iranians around the flag as being attacked by the Great Satan for no reason, and save their asses from being overthrown by those very same Iranians. Having a few military positions bombed, or one (or more) of their attack boats sunk, would probably be sufficient.

They're asswhole Persians, not suicidal jihadi Arabs.

Or maybe they are not doing anything really different and Trump and Co. are just ginning up an excuse for rallying Americans around the flag.
