A sports economist says that the Raiders won't work in Las Vegas Las Vegas would be one of the five smallest media markets in the NFL

One potential problem in Vegas is the size of the market. If the Raiders were to move to Sin City, they'd be located in the NFL's fifth-smallest media market. Only Green Bay, New Orleans, Jacksonville and Buffalo are smaller.

The visiting teams fans will be the fan base so they can all go to Vegas and party for a weekend.

This story makes no sense. There are over 2+ million people in this area, and the away game factor would not go down in time. There are more than enough away fans in cold weather areas that would plan a trip every year to three or four if their team was playing in a great stadium in awesome weather and could have fun on the strip for the weekend.

They are as good as there and tourist hotel taxes will pay for a huge chunk of it so the locals won't be hit with any cost.

I think the idea of the Raiders moving to LV is a great idea. There are already so many Raiders fans in Southern California, and flights are so cheap, and easy, I think they would sell plenty of season tickets to people living in LA, Riverside, San Berdoo, and Orange counties alone.

Also, these would be some exciting games. Because of people's willingness to travel to LV, there would be a huge number of opposing team fans for every game. Of course, this would hurt the Raider's home field advantage. Oh, well. But, how much fun would it be to go to an NFL game in Vegas?

If you read the local press int he LA area, it's a done deal...

I think anyone in LA who isn't a Raiders fan would love to keep the Raiders the hell out of LA!

It has always amazed me that our TV market doesn't include Toronto - especially since our stations that carry the games are on their cable system.

Smaller than Oakland?

Oakland is part of the San Francisco–Oakland–Hayward, CA Metropolitan Area. Yes I know they do not include Rochester in Buffalo-Cheektowaga, NY Combined Statistical Area but for sports writers I expect them to conveniently forget that fact.

Sure, but Frisco has their own team which, I would assume, draws away from Oakland's market. Move East from Oakland, and it gets pretty sparse, pretty quick.

If the Raiders move to Vegas, there would be a significant market in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino Counties that would be ecstatic. Knowing those fans, they would probably be happier about a move to Vegas than they would a move back to LA.

Considering the construction infrastructure available in Vegas, as well as copious cheap land, tax revenue, and casino moguls drooling over the potential revenue stream, the NFL could get a beautiful, multi-billion- dollar, air-conditioned stadium built in about two weeks, for about a $1.50. The Vegas of today is a lot different than it was just ten years ago. Vegas has had significant growth in terms of economy, jobs, and population for decades. They could absolutely support an NFL team. It would just be a very different paradigm.

On a personal note, as a resident of LA (born and raised in Rochester) I would be absolutely psyched for an NFL team to land in LV, and I consider the Raiders to be a perfect fit. I would be going there twice a season, at least, to see a game. Bills vs Raiders in Vegas??? Oh God, please let it be!!!

I'm just guessing but isn't the growth slowing or stopping because of the casino's popping up across the country? And didn't Vegas get killed in the housing market collapse?

It did, indeed, get crushed in the housing collapse. But, lots of places did. I do believe it is rebounding. As far as it being affected by casinos in other parts of the country, you wouldn't think so by going there. They're constantly building new ones. There's a whole string of enormous casino resorts that you'll pass on the way in from LA. I've worked at a couple-- they're nice, and absolutely huge.

The article really isn't very convincing. The market is plenty big. Additionally, Vegas just transcends your average TV market. It's going to be absolutely huge when the Raiders move there. Mark Davis really pulled a brilliant idea out of his bowl cut.

I was on record as saying this couldn't happen, but I'm starting to change my mind a bit. I'd be more likely the head there for a weekend Bills game than St Louis or a lot of other places. Who knows??? Last trip there we stayed with some friends who had moved there, and got a different feeling for the place.
