Honestly I haven't followed Fred. Last I heard he was injured. Is he playing now?

He twisted his ankle and some of his haters here on TSW made a point to announce that he was injured........and then didn't bother to update the fact that he didn't actually miss any time.

That's TSW for you.

That cut is going to go down as one of Whaley's worst moves. The Bills have a really bad locker room right now, and he's the sort of player who can make a difference on that front.

He's played 191 out of the teams 842 snaps (23 percent) and has 26 catches. That's reasonably solid production for a role-playing 3rd down back who is 34 years old. Don't tell me the Bills couldn't have used him.

It seemed at the time that it was something of a move to specifically remove his leadership from the lockerroom.........as if unwanted.

It was a terrible move.

Things spiraled out of control here at the end but this season was lost when they had 5 of their first 8 at home......including one road game at a neutral site........and came out of it 4-4.

Fred could really have helped during the EJ stretch, IMO.

Apparently Pete Carroll doesn't have much belief in him as a runner but he is relied upon as a blocker and extra 3rd down receiver. As another poster pointed out, with the number of roster moves Seattle made... They could have simply cut him if they felt he was washed up. There is no real fan base in Seattle who would question them. And Russell Wilson did not have to say that much about him... Fred hasn't been known for much this year besides crashing his car. So if they think he can still contribute - their record gives them more credibility than the Bills staff.

Having said that although I hated the cut, Fred would not have made any real difference in Buffalo this year. He doesn't play D, for one thing.

Congrats to fred! One of the most deserving guys!

Maybe next year, fred (with his super bowl ring) and the new 3rd assistant to the east coast scout of the jags, Doug Whaley, can bury the hatchet and have a good laugh about his release. Perhaps boobie Dixon and boom Herron can join them.

This is bullcrap.

Congrats to Freddie indeed, but the rest is gratuitous and in fact stupid. If you want Whaley gone, fine, good enough, but Whaley had a senior position with Pittsburgh, he is widely respected in the league for his talent evaluation, and if we cut him, he will readily find another significant role on another team. Looking around the league, there are plenty of teams which have to feel they can improve their overall level of talent.

It was a hard-headed move of keeping young guys seen as having potential and guys who can play special teams, because we wanted a fullback and more TE on the offensive side, we wanted to keep guys who can play ST, and we wanted to keep more D.

"Specifically to remove his leadership" pah, tin foil hat time. What is the evidence, anywhere, that anyone wanted to lose Fred's leadership or didn't regret its loss?

With 20-20 hindsight, the minimal contribution from Felton, the significant lost time by McCoy and Williams, and the cut of Brown (which still has me blinking), could we have used Fred? Absolutely. But the Fred move made sense from a hard-headed analytics and roster numbers standpoint. Why is this hard to understand?

It is one of the places where I believe Rex, as HC, needed to make a call between differing DC and OC and ST needs, and he decided in favor of D and ST and overruled Roman, and I'm not sure it reflected the kind of balanced judgement a HC needs, but that is just my speculation.

Fred's been Seattle's third down back. Apparently, he's got good hands, can read defenses, and is good at picking up a blitz. Who knew?

pete Carroll?

Lol. The Bills knew that too, of course. However, McCoy made him as expendable as Karlos did, because McCoy can also do those things and they wanted him out there on 3rd downs anyway. Where we could have really used Fred was when McCoy was hurt. Whether that would have made a difference in w-l, I don't know.

Just joking around, man.

I actually am quite ambivalent about Whaley.

Dude is now a 3rd down specialist. Let him enjoy this. He deserves it.

Who do we have as our 3rd down specialist?

I believe that's Sammy Watkins; 20 yards down field.

The Bills made the right decision cutting Fred when looking at only the yards. I wanted Fred to stick around for his leadership. In the end, I don't really know the affect of locker room/veteran leadership on the field, but if there was ever a team that needed it, it was the this team.

I like Whaley a lot, but IMO this was one of his obvious mistakes.

Believe it or not, friends, it's entirely OK to believe that the Bills made a sound football decision with regard to releasing Fred, and still be happy for him now that he finally gets to taste the playoffs.

Fred wouldn't have fixed the Bills' locker room issues -- he was here for 10 years, unless some have forgotten.

Buffalo has gotten great production out of their running backs -- that hasn't been the issue with this team.

Boom Herron and Boobie killed it.
