GM of the year?

DC Grid

Recommended Posts

The GM of the year is the GM of the team that wins the Super Bowl. If that is the Bills, then Whaley is definitely GM of the year.

No it's not. Should the Pats GM win GM of the year? Absolutely not. Brady gives them every advantage . GM of the year usually goes to a surprise playoff team or one that has been bad for awhile and quickly ascends. A lot of times that's not the team that wins the SB.

Correct. GMs should not just be judged on who wins the most games - that is what Head Coaches are judged on. Especially when a lot of the GMs around the league are no longer in control of hiring the coach. GMs need to win, of course they do, but they are judged on improvement and quality of their roster.

Whaley pulled 2 good starters at critical positions and one backup who'd start for a lot of teams out of a draft he had no first round pick (his fault I know). He signed a guy who has a shot of being a long term solution for the Bills at QB (first since Kelly) brought in a great TE, and vastly upgraded another starting position OG, on the cheap with incognito. Then he basically recouped his one big mistake of the offseason by turfing Cassel for a pick. I know he's a popular target for people on this board to tee off on, but has any GM done a better job this year?

If the bills win a playoff game, yes....

Except that isn't the case...

2014 - Jerry Jones/Cowboys (12-4, 3rd sees, lost NFCC)

2013 - Jon Dorsey/Chiefs (11-5, 5th seed, lost WC)

2012 - Ryan Grigson/Colts (11-5, 5th seed, lost WC)

2011 - Trent Baalke/49ers (13-3, 2nd seed, lost NFCC)

2010 - Scott Pioli/Chiefs (10-6, 4th seed, lost WC)

2009 - Bill Polian/Colts (14-2 1st seed, lost SB)

2008 - Bill Parcells/Dolphins (11-5, 3rd seed, lost WC)

2007 - Scott Pioli/Patriots (16-0, 1st seed, lost SB)

2006 - Mickey Loomis/Saints (10-6, 2nd seed, lost NFCC)

2005 - Bill Polian/Colts (14-2 1st seed, lost AFC Semi)

In fact the last GMOY who won the Super Bowl was Scott Pioli in 2003.

Agreed but the general tenor of the selections is BIG improvement in record.

The Bills were 9-7 last year.

Some of those teams had finished last and had the first pick in the draft right before that season and went on to make the playoffs.

That's why at minimum this team would need to win 11 and get to an AFC championship game and even then he would need A LOT of help because there are many teams playing well above expectation this season.

Bills have been a trendy playoff pick since they hired Rex so there would be little surprise if they snuck into the playoffs after getting so close last season.

whaley hit on 2 of 6 picks (darby & karlos williams).

john miller is the 75th ranked guard (not so good).

COST THE BILLS A WIN vs jax by saving $1.5 mil by shipping cassel to dallas. cassel is nothing special, but he would have won the jax game if started.

whaley will be lucky if he keeps his job, which will only happen if the bills make the playoffs (the pegulas already tried to hire Polian).

I'm accused of being unfair to Bills players/coaches/gm's.........but in all reality Cassel or no Cassel they should have won that Jax game.

EJ doesn't always melt down like that. That was one for the ages and could not have been predicted.

I don't disagree that they shouldn't have traded Cassel.....it made no sense, they need a 3rd QB anyway......but I think it was fair for Whaley to expect him to not hand the Jags 21 points.

He didn't look nearly that bad against a much better Bengals team. That was just nuts.

John Miller has been a roller coaster, but let's not base our evaluation solely on PFF's rankings, since they're basically like picking out of a hat.

These are the same guys that gave Aaron Rodgers a negative grade for his 5 TD/0 INT, 300-yard performance in a win, but a positive grade for his 77-yard, 0 TD performance in a loss against the Broncos.

Also, context is incredibly important for the discussion. Whaley hit on 2 of 6 picks. If a GM hits (as in drafts a very good player) 1/3 of the time, that's really, really good.

To draft ROY candidates on both sides of the ball, without a 1st round pick, is excellent drafting.

Whaley's doing very well. But there is something out of alignment in the front office, between Whaley and Ryan. Whaley would still like EJ to pan out as a decent player, but Ryan keeps pushing EJ down. So Whaley foolishly traded Cassel for a bag of donuts or something, to force Ryan to elevate EJ to #2. I agree with other posters that the Bills with Cassel beat the Jags, and that ridiculous loss may keep the Bills out of the playoffs. And there was no rush to trade Cassel when he did. There's always some team desperate for a veteran QB, even someone as far below acceptable as Cassel. I have to think Ryan has the clearer head about this situation. He sees EJ on the field and clearly doesn't want him playing for him. Elevating Josh whoever to #2 for the Jets game was an act of rashness too, just to make a point.

That's the same thing the Cowboys thought about the Tampa Bay game. Cassell sure as hell wouldn't have been able to make that throw to Easley.

Surprised Miller has done so poorly, thanks for that info. My main contention is the notion that Cassel would have won us the jacksonville game. That is sheer folly and seemingly ignores the fact that at least EJ threw the ball downfield and brought them back into contention. It's pretty doubtful Cassel would have thrown much beyond checkdowns and would have probably committed his own style of turnovers.

They both suck as quarterbacks, and if you take into account their different styles but weigh their total game relative to each other, how do you really figure Cassel pulls out the jags game? He just spent 4 games behind the best O-line in football and how did he do?

EJ put the last nail in his starting QB coffin with the Jax game but I'd rather have him then Cassel. Meh.

Do you have proof of this or just guessing like the guy who said only GMs who win Super Bowls are named GMOY? I can look this stuff up, you know.

Miller has been absolutely fine for a rookie. He has had some inconsistency and has had a bit of a tough time sometimes in pass protection, but he is really starting to play well in the run game. They presumably drafted him for his skills in the run game given that we were wanting to build a run first offense. The encouraging thing is there is noticeable improvement in his play - the last 2 starts have been his best 2 starts... that is really good news for the future.
