So the state says Fanduel and Draft Kings are illegal gambling. Where does this leave private fantasy leagues? IMHO the state has decided it wants a piece of the pie.

Two words: money grab.

It takes thought, but it certainly does not take skill IMO.

Watching more football to become more informed is no different than going to the track to watch your favorite horse breeze before the big race.

With that said, gambling on the ponies is legit, so why isn't Fan Duel?

That's a pretty good analogy actually. With FanDuel, you're not just picking one horse to come in...you're picking who you think is going to be the best QB, best two RB's , best three WR's , best TE, best kicker and best D. It's like a super Octagon Box for $2

Also, how is it not a conflict of interest for the NFL and owners like Jerry Jones to have ties to these fantasy sites (which are let's face it gambling on their sport)? That's just as dumb as NY's argument

The NHL as a league invested something like $300,000 into these sites. How is that not a conflict of interests?

I joined FanDuel. I put in $25 and have had a blast picking my team for the past 8 weeks. I bet $2 on the big competition each week. Just won $12.50 this past week because I came in 20,976 or something like that. FanDuel and DraftKings will be challenging the AG's Cease and Desist order in the next five days so I put my team in last night. Unlike Online Poker (where the cards are selected randomly), this actually takes some thought when you have a salary cap, choosing matchups, etc. It has me watching a lot more football and knowing a lot more players. I imagine this whole thing involves the NY AG trying to grab headlines and gain support...but I think it will backfire because NY is probably one of the biggest sport fan states by population. He may get a rude awakening when the voters turn out.

You don't win at poker based on your cards, you win at poker based on your ability to push around the other players. IMO poker takes a lot more skill.

I thought private leagues were like Super Bowl pools. It's not gambling if no one is taking a vig.

Face to face, yes I agree. But when you are looking at an animated figure on a computer screen, if you decide to go all in, you better at least have some cards to play.

This is where I disagree. It is 10% thought and 90% luck.

If I choose Blake Bortles and he throws 2 TDs against the Rams

You chose Aaron Rodgers and he gets hurt.

You were just unlucky there even though we both put thought into it.

Of course it is. Anytime we gamble on a live outcome there is luck involved. I'm just not buying into the skill aspect of the companies' argument. If it was so "skill-based" there wouldn't be professional gamblers spreading six figures on hundred of entries to get a 10% return.

You go all in with 2,9

The other player goes all in with pocket kings.

the flop is 2,9,4

Turn is a Q

River is a 2

IS that luck or skill?

I play FanDuel through from the Buffalo Bills season ticket holder email where they give an entry each week. I play for free and can win tickets and passes, no money. Illegal, I don't think so. It also helps that I am a Pennsylvania resident, and am proud that I moved to PA from NY years ago. Less restrictions on everything in PA, much less of a nanny state. The taxes are much less too, which in turn pay for my season tickets. If I have any say in what happens in NY, it would only be that I work in NY and pay NY state payroll taxes. But as for betting on the NFL, no problems here.

1. Does anyone have any idea of what the house take/vig is for sites like FanDuel and Draft Kings? I'm not a big gambler, but whenever I'm in Vegas I visit the sports books. I've kept away from fantasy sites because they're not transparent. I know what the house keeps in a normal sports betting pool, for various bets at the race track, etc. I have no idea. To me it's a consumer issue -- one that would be better addressed by ensuring a fair/transparent game than by banning these sites.

2. Follow the money. Nevada casino interests hate competition. (Follow Harry Reid too) Look what happened when Delaware tried to legalize sports gambling. The current Administration thinks it's fine and dandy for states to legalize a federally banned substance, but when a state tries to legalize gambling, watch out.

I think their legality should be in line with any other gambling. If gambling is legal, then fantasy sports with money on the line should be legal. If gambling is illegal, then fantasy sports with money on the line should be illegal.

Yup. And if they want to legalize, then they have to be subject to the same regulation as other legalized gambling. The problem with these sites is they want to have it both ways--no, we're not gambling, but we promise winnings to the suckers who make us rich.

The Fantasy sports part of these sites should be legal, it's the scope-creep these sites have gotten in to that call into question whether it should be legal or not. Some skill is required in assembling a fantasy team to compete weekly, other activities are gambling because they are more luck/chance than skill.
