What's the explanation for the *first* squib kickoff?

Bills score and grab the momentum, and then squib kick? WTF?

I realize it was into the wind, but it still doesn't make any sense to me. The Vikes get the ball at the 35 to start the drive, instead of making them drive the longer field. What's the deal? Anybody hear anything about this decision?

EDIT: For clarity, I'm referring to the first squib kick, not the one at the end of the game.

I think the Vikes made a tactical mistake. If they had not touched the ball, the clock cannot go down to zero. They would have still got a chance for a Hail Mary throw and who knows if they get a PI penalty.

My guess, They wanted to keep the ball out of Patterson's hands. Dangerous returner who could take it to the house on any return.

Isn't that why the KO specialist is supposed to get it in deep in the EZ? Stupid call and strategy!

Just a guess, but if the kick goes out if the end zone and they get the ball at the 20, a Hail Mary bomb to anywhere on the field may draw a PI call. Since the game can't end on a defensive penalty, out trots the FG team to try for the win.

To me it's the right call for very short squib or more ideally onside kick. You want to have someone fall on it or get tackled immediately if they get a chance to field it, which is easier from short distance. Kicking off down the field gives opportunity to set up a return or concoct some music city miracle bs. Our 'kickoff specialist' had multiple kicks returned today. Also if you do kick it out, it gives them a chance to heave a Hail Mary and get a pi call. Putting the game in the hands of the refs to call or not call a phantom pi is NOT the position I want to be in there. Def the right call IMO, just should have done a better job bringing down the guy who first got it.

Agreed. But they made up for it in my mind with the onsides at the end of the game. I was thinking they should do it, just to kill time. That was a good call -- even if it made the end a little more exciting than it should have been.

Yep I called it too. Of course, I couldn't breathe on the return.

Yeah, so the Bills could just walk down to the ball and pick it up and take possession?

Also, the OP is talking about the first squib kick. Not the one at the end of the game.

wow do you guys watch football? they cant "not touch the ball" it would have been a turnover to us. also they cant run a play beyond a feeble return with there slowest players. to the op- you wanted patterson to return one on us or a hail mary/pass interference??? it was a perfect decision and result.

edit just saw you meant the first squib...my answer....who gives a f____.

i think it is time rules. if the kick is out of the EZ no clock is run off. touchback.

clock starts though once the kick has travelled 10 yds and hits the field of play.

so no chance for a regular play.

patterson beeing dangerous may also plays a role

That was an absolutely idiotic call.....a squib kick, and a penalty on top. Gave them the ball at the 40. I don't care how dangerous Cordarelle is. They stopped him earlier. How dumb is our special teams coach? Not only make a bad call following our first touchdown, but they got holding calls on just about every return. One holding call was on a play where McKelvin avoided the punt. On another punt we had two penalties. WTH.

If I were the new owner, I'd dump just about every coach on this team. Starting with Marrone. The fish rots from the head down. His offensive coordinator is exactly that. His pal can't coach special teams.

Marrone said something about this in the post game conference, referring to it as "something we need to fix"

I saw it as overthinking themselves and trying to get cute. I see Hackett doing the same thing calling the offensive plays. Just when we are starting to gash them for good runs, he abandons it and calls pass plays even though our line was collapsing all over the place and Orton was getting crushed.

Nothing worse than coaches outhinking themselves. It's like icing the kicker-- embarassing.

Huh? I would have loved to see this "tactical mistake" of the one they chose.

LMAO... That's an onside kick. They have to touch it, the ball is live.
