I haven't been following this case super close, so I don't know, but that was a given, and everyone knows casinos have cameras everywhere. It's possible that the casino didn't release that footage to the NFL, and the NFL didn't try very hard to get it (which was woefully negligent IMO). And since his wife didn't press charges, the local police wouldn't demand it either. So perhaps the casino owners just kept it. But that said, you know a dozen security people and casino management and others have seen that tape, which everyone involved likely said, "Holy ****, you gotta see this! He clocked her!" I don't know what limp dick d-bag started this term, but let's just say, I'd like to "put my hands" on him. It's such an awful term for describing that which it is so commonly used to describe. I think I disagree with you. I've always interpreted that term as a way of lowering the bar for what is perceived as unacceptable, so that any physical contact that is unwelcome is also unacceptable. It isn't just a matter of touching that causes pain, i.e. punching, or slapping, but grabbing, pushing, restraining, etc. are also unacceptable. Self defense is, of course, another thing entirely. So why is it different now that there is video of something he had already admitted to? Because for the most part this country is led by the media and the media no longer could protect the league once TMZ published a video of the knockout punch. With no video, the media (who makes good ad money off of the NFL) played good soldiers for the league and let the thing fade away. The media has egg on their face as well. That's somewhat my point. They probably have been trying to get it since it happened and kept upping the price, and someone decided they could make a pretty good buck if they stole it. The team and league are far more concerned with what is happening on twitter than what went down in that elevator. i wouldnt disagree with your take. viral videos have huge impacts. sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. on this one im not sure how much really changes besides an emotional reaction. did anyone truly think that she was beating the hell out of him and happened to trip and fall? it was clear months ago that he took a shot at her, and was pretty indifferent about it at the time - dragging her out of the elevator. the disciplinary arms of both the nfl and team embraced him as someone that made an isolated mistake and was dedicating his life to making it right. im not sure what the video today changes, unless he boldly lied and they accepted it pretty quickly at face value. The league and teams would probably prefer to let the courts work out crime and punishment, which I think is actually the way it should be done. Now they've put themselves in a position with all their conduct policies and punishments that the unthinking masses look to the league to be a secondary court system now. But a Betty White joke ruffled your feathers?!!? I already told you I was wasted when I said that. I'd just gotten in from the bar and had a head full of whiskey fueling my fire. Yes of course I (just) saw it. I was not surprised by what I saw. I assumed he had clocked her when the first video surfaced. She was clearly knocked out. How do you think that happens? Can't the league and the team put 2 + 2 together? You know what, I think they can and did. What they are doing now is punishing him because they didn't get it right the first time and they felt the heat when the public reacted to their "not getting it right" as RG said at the time. The problem is it's treated like a term of art when it actually has a very plain meaning. If anyone, woman or otherwise, comes at you aggressively, blocks your freedom of movement, or destroys your property you have a right to use reasonable force to alleviate that situation even if it means "putting your hands" on them. The security department in a casino is a VERY secretive place and a very limited number of people have access to information. A tape leaking is a pretty big deal. The NFL can't force the casino to cough up the tape. Did they try their hardest? Who knows. Could the casino have been worried about a law suit from Rice for giving up the tape? Not sure. The parking garage video could have been outside the scope of the casino security department thus help by another department and easier for TMZ to get their hands on. With all of this said: what did anyone think would be on the elevator tape? It can't be that big of a surprise and two games was ridiculous on its face. When they didn't have a choice, they cut and run. That's not shocking or a sign of social media running the show, it's just PR 101. Damage control. They botched the ruling initially, doubled down by either lying about seeing the video evidence or purposefully ignoring said video since it wasn't public at the time, and got caught with their pants down. It's been shameful all around for the NFL and the Ravens both. You're right it's appeasement. It shouldn't be different, but the media made the decision to let it die down because they're partners with this multi-billion dollar business and they didn't want to create waves when there was no video proof of what actually happened. Even though he admitted doing what he did. The media still should have held firm and not let the story die down, but they did. The media is very powerful in this country and they should have been the ones to not let the story die down after the 2 game suspension outrage. Abusers rarely change their stripes and this elevator incident gives us a clear picture of the real Ray Rice. Some may wonder why this woman would stay with him and even marry him. Well, abusers are master manipulators, so she is probably convinced in some way that this was her fault. She may even believe she deserved it. People like Ray Rice rarely change. For whatever reason, be it his childhood, whatever, He became this horrible person. Ray Rice deserves what happened to him today. He actually deserves jail time. His wife should not be able to drop the charges. The police have the proof so he should be arrested. Like I said before, people like this rarely change, but to have any chance to change, they must be made to feel the full consequences of their actions. As I mentioned earlier, I think most people assumed, based on his wife taking blame, that she struck him at some point. But I am not saying that it justifies what he did.
