Rotoworld: Mike Williams may get cut?

Recommended Posts

"What concerned me about Williams' roster spot is that he isn't likely to contribute on special teams. Goodwin and Graham both offer upside as kick returners, while Hogan finished third on the team with nine special teams tackles last season."

Hogan has him concerned about taking Williams' roster spot because of 9 special teams tackles? Weak attempt at trying to sound smart Rodak.

and how has Graham co tributed returning? Similar with Goodwin, though, he has returned he has been banged up a little whilst doing so. Neither are solid on special teams due to differing reasons, but the article is ho-hum meeting a quota

shouldnt it be "it's like a light going on” not off?

this isnt the first time ive read speculation mike williams might not make the team but thats all it is...i believe even he said the coaches held him back a little in OTA's and from what I understand he's salary is guaranteed for this season so he isnt going anywhere

One would think...but we can't see into the mind of Doug. Today might be opposite day.

If I'm Marrone, I'd have an extremely short leash. I'm not going to lie. I'm not a giant fan of the guy. Growing up here, you hear some bad stories about him. I agree it was a great risk to get a talented guy like him but he needs to grow up. And yes, I 'd rather have SJ here over him. But I'm praying he does mature and proves me wrong. It'd be a great story.

I could see Williams getting cut. They have invested a lot of draft picks at the position, so if guy like Goodwin emerges Williams would be expendable.

cut a guy who has proven NFL production that you just signed and guaranteed his first year salary. Hmmmm.

Why would they cut him, regardless of who "emerges" in TC? His salary is full guaranteed for this season so even if Goodwin "emerges" so much that they decide to start him (I doubt this, he is a nice weapon but can't see him starting on the outside) then MW provides, at worst, quality depth. I can't see anything on the field leading to him getting cut.

I don't know anything about his actions other than what was reported while he was in TB. Not asking you to divulge the stories, but, have any of them been since he signed here? I am hoping getting traded was a wake up call for him.

I'm sure it's not unique to a lot of athletes but he was pretty much coddled and pushed along. He got in some trouble but because he was a great athlete (and he's a great basketball player too), it just got taken care. Not a particular smart guy and when I hear of his issues in TB, it's really no surprise.

As long as it's something like murder, I'm a big fan of 2nd chances. I jsut hate when guys get chance after chance and don't improve. IMO, Williams has had that happen. I just hope this is his wake up call because physically, he could be a really good receiver. It's the mental part I worry about.

How is he a beast. Often injured, didn't run good routes last year. Made a couple of plays deep, but overall he didn't do much.

People rag on TJ but he was open deep plenty of times and EJ just was not accurate enough. Tj is entering his 3rd year. I look forward to watching him in camp and preseason

I agree with your concerns regarding Goodwin's durability. I don't however agree with the rest of your assessment on him.

In the 2nd Jets game, both SJ & Woods were out injured. This left Goodwin as a starter(his only starting game). I was very surprised and pleased with what he showed in that game. He showed he had the ability to get open on the shorter routes and had exceptionally good hands(at least in that game). Final stats for his one starting game were 6-81 & 1TD.

I'm not familiar with William's contract, but it would seem odd to me if it was fully guaranteed. In general, NFL contracts are not guaranteed, and since the bills did not give him a signing bonus they would have no cap hit if they cut Williams. If he made the opening day roster his salary for the year would be guaranteed.

With his salary being fully guaranteed i do not see it. MW has experience that Hogan and Graham do not have. Coaches know that the performance in the preseason means very little in the regular season. A Vet like MW who has proven he can play in this league gets a huge advantage over unproven guys.

Uh oh, Woods isn't on Adam Levitan's sheet.

What sheet exactly? Players he gives a "sheet" to write about?

So basically our wr core is overrated and Watkins was a reach according to this guy. I'll look for my news elsewhere in the future.

There are conflicting reports out there.

Spotrac says 2013 and 2014 money is guaranteed. They call it $9.4M but it looks like it's actually $9.6M, plus a $200K workout bonus that I believe he must have already earned.

http://www.spotrac.c.../mike-williams/

Rodak as usual provides some info but not complete info, and he has some numbers wrong. http://espn.go.com/b...lliams-contract

LaCanfora tells us that the 2015 money (the 6.8M minus the 600K workout bonus) won't be guaranteed until day 3 of the 2015 regular season.

https://twitter.com/...131205725450240

Basically, the Bills can keep Mike Williams through next season's camp for a price of $2.8M (this year's money + 2015 workout bonus). That's pretty good for a season's + two off-seasons worth of look-see and control over the trading rights to a very productive player.

If he doesn't make the team this year at a cheap but guaranteed salary, it will be because he has f---ed up royally.

All of the information is in your spotrac link.

If we cut him we are up for a $1.6M cap hit.

If he makes his workout bonus(plays the season) we are up for a $1.8M cap hit.

If we cut him before the 3rd day of the 2015 NFL year we have no cap hit for 2015.

If we cut him after day 3 he is guaranteed $5.2M.....and a total of a $6.8M if he plays.

Sounds way too much like CYA... He was wrong for the original one liner. He was equally wrong for the multi-paragraph backtracking....

"You know that thing I said? I didn't really say it." Unfortunately I'm getting that more and more in print and radio lately. Even my favorite Sal on his show Saturday. He opens with the idea that Pegula will take the rap if the Bills leave town, as if he didn't do enough to save them. So I tweet back...

@PromoTheRobot Jun 21

@SalSports Don't get why TP is being singled out over Bills. Why not Trump, Jacobs, TG, Rich, etc? TP never made promises. Media doing that.

So Sal fires back...

Sal Capaccio ‏@SalSports Jun 21

@PromoTheRobot What is the media doing? Singled out how? I don't get your complaint. He's in the news now so we're talking about him now.

I mean the guy says he thinks TP will get the blame like an hour ago, and he's telling me I didn't hear what I heard.

Contracts aren't guaranteed but a specific amount of money is.

Latest Rotoworld post not so gloomy:

Mike Williams got some first-team reps in three-wide sets on the final day of Bills minicamp.

WGR 550's Joe Buscaglia scoffs at the notion Williams' roster spot is in jeopardy, saying the Bills "like him a great deal, and view him as someone that can make an impact on the offensive side of the ball." We tend to agree, even if Williams merely projects as a red-zone specialist behind Sammy Watkins and Robert Woods.

He's not going anywhere....
