Favorite all time movie?

Recommended Posts

Lots of great movies listed here in this thread that are high on my lists too.

American History X

Godfather 1&2 (it's 2 by a nose for me)

Shawshank

Se7en

LA Confidential

American Beauty

Goodfellas

and more I'm sure I'm forgetting after 7 pages....

It is impossible for me to pick 1 overall or even 1 per genre but just to add to the mix on here for unmentioned greats I would throw The Prestige and Gattaca into the ring.

Even with the Batman movies being as good as they are I still think Prestige is Nolan's best work to date and Gattaca is a fantastic sci-fi film with good social commentary that doesn't get talked about much.

Speaking of sci-fi I also have to throw Forbidden Planet out there as an amazing classic movie that was WAY ahead of its time.

Ah, The Prestige. That's a good one. I think I found Memento more entertaining, but The Prestige seems to me to have more depth. It's one I've watched a half a dozen times or more and I get something new from it every time.

Great French film with subtitles. Check it out if you get a chance. Beautiful cinematography and an interesting story line. The lead actress is beautiful too.

Excellent movie. Not sure I'd list it in my top five of all time, but absolutely worth the watch.

Great flick. If we are talking Hitchcock though, I like "north by northwest" and "the man who knew too much" slightly better. Vertigo too is solid.

The best Hitchcock film of all time should be its own thread.

Those are both great. But they don't have Grace Kelly. ;)

I prefer the movie "Rochelle, Rochelle." It is about a young girl's strange, erotic journey from Milan to Minsk.

:w00t:

Apparently, the best movie of all time is Empire Strikes Back.

It's definitely the best SW film and an integral part of my youth.

I don't have enough distance from it but it sure as hell stands up.

My sleeper selection is "The Conversation."

Agreed. This thread has morphed from best movie ever, to top 5 best movies, to here's a good movie...you should watch it.

My top 3 (I don't do conformity) were:

No Country for Old Men

Shawshank Redemption

JFK

Ironically, I think the JFK conspiracy theories are now the conformist view, thanks mostly to.....Stone's JFK.

Agreed. Such a great movie though. Epic performances by Costner, Pesci, Kevin Bacon, and Tommy Lee Jones (among others). My favorite scene is Costner's (Jim Garrison) visit with Donald Southerland in DC. Brilliant.

It really was a great movie and one that always sucks me in; and that's coming from someone who thinks it was 99% bullsh--.
