When Mattingly coached the Dodgers, I used to say he would go through his bullpen trying to find that guy who was having an off day. He seemed to be successful at that. I realize that all the stats managers do that now but that is the risk. When you use 6 pitchers in a game, you are lucky if you can get through that without one of them being off. And in the playoffs, just not being able to throw strikes to the first guy you face qualifies as off.
If Counsell's early use of Hader would have gotten them a win, he would be considered a genius but it didn't work out. Such is the defining line for genius's.
