First off, based on your argument as to why RB is not qualified to hire/interview a GM, then how i RW anymore qualified? Secondly everyday all over the world people are interviewed and hired by people who have never done the actual job themselves. But they still hire a person for the job. RB will likely become the liason between RW and whomever this new football guy is. Will this new person need RB's approval to sign some player or coach. Not likely, on the other hand he will need RB's approval for setting a total player budget and things at that level. And something like the overall budget likely owuld have already been discussed and agreed upon between RB and RW. Will he need to work with and get along with RB, again yes. But the new person will run the football side of things.

For the most part the opposite is true. They won't state their true thoughts, but rarely wil lthey ever rip a player as you never know five years from now, that guy could be on your team so you never want to say anything bad. So for me hearing BP stating something bad about a potential draft pick was very damming. On the other hand Grise stating he'll be good, means less to me than BP stating bad as ex-players, coaches etc alwasy say everyone is great.

I would say Miami, but that might be due more to the intensity between the teams. Houston certainly was pretty good those years too. But we're really talking about 2nd best of the 2nd best conference.

Well if were to die Jan 2 or up to the changes that get voted on take affect, then definitely no estate tax. However from what I've read, this also is a way for people to pass on property/assets to others and to avoid the estate taxes. That's why the govt wants to close this "loophole" up ASAP. The way I read it RW could pass the team on to his heirs and avoid the estate tax, though I'm sure it's still a complex method involved.
-
Here's a thought I had, don't think I've seen this angle discussed prior. There's been alot of talk how RW's heirs won't be able to keep team even if they wanted due to estate taxes. For those of you not familier with estate taxes, next year 2010 is not only an upcapped year in the NFL, but also is from an estate tax point. Next year is the year to die as there currently is 100% exemption from tax. It also is the year to transfer property out of ones name to someone else to avoid potential estate taxes. The fed is planning to change this, two weeks ago the house voted to permanently set the exemption at $3.5 mil. This isn't anything new as all along there was a plan to make some new likely higher amount the permanent number. The Senate however has stated that it will not vote on this measure until after Jan 1st. Two things are almost certain, by sometime early next year there will be an exemption set likely in the 3 to 5 mil range which compared to the value of the Bill's is a drop in the bucket. The other certainly is there will be a period of time in early 2010 before the new limit is enacted. That would give RW a window to sell the team off, and transfer the proceeds to his wife's and or kids name to avoid the estate tax. That's why the Fed is going to change this as otherwise many people will do similar things to avoid eventual estate taxes. Maybe RW cuts a deal where as long as he's alive he's named CEO, but the team is sold. Certainly no evidence of anything other than to say there's been alot of chatter out of Jim Kelly lately, makes me wonder if something could be going on behind the scenes. Also could explain why RW all of a sudden is willing to spend $10 mil on a coach as it's not his $10 mil. The one thing I do totally believe is anything RW has stated in the past means nothing as he's not tipping his hand in any way till after the fact. Something else to consider??

When you consider how slim the pickings are for landing a top QB, trying Brohm out for next season isn't such a bad idea. If you draft someone it could easily take over a year if you're lucky for him to develop. Rookies sometimes can look good quickly when surrounded by talent., however anyone going to the Bills' next season would take awhile anyway, so play Brohm. If you get lucky and there's a QB available whom you really felt should have been taken earlier, grab him, otherwise fill your other needs.

Polian weighs in on Tebow
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to Solomon Grundy's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
When I read the title of this post, I expected it to be about how Polian stated Tebow was great as most of the time coaches, GM's, etc will never say anything bad about anyone. The fact that he's stating he doesn't think he'll be very good, to me is rather shocking and makes me think he's even worse than people think. Coaches and Gm's tend to be professional suck ups in most cases. As far as his "winning attitude" any one on Florida would have a winning attitiude. I'm much more impressed with players who come from weaker schools and are able to lift the team due to their play as opposed to players on teams with far superior talent who just win becasue they are so much better than the competition. -
And exactly why are the Bill's under some obligation to report what's going on?? Just casue you've not heard anything means nothing. Two weeks ago everyone was up in arms that the Bills hadn't talked to Shannahan yet. Two days later it was reported that RB met with him two days prior. Who released the info afterwards who knows, but the meeting took place with no one knowing, so basically you nor anyone else around here has no idea what is really going on. The smartest thing the Bills can do is report nothing of their intentions or what they are doing!

TO must be extended or cut NOW
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to BillnutinHouston's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The problem with your argument is what you're suggesting is likely the best options long term. But the front offices first obligation is to the 53 current players, and to try and win now. So if TO gives them a better chance of winning you keep him. For some of these players, there may never be a next year, so they want to win now. Any team that didn't try to win would in my opinion have trouble attracting free agents dow nthe road. -
Be careful what you wish for, Bills fans
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to PromoTheRobot's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Along the same line, there's very few coaches older than 50 who've ever won. Again Weeb was one and I beleive there was one other. Most of these proven guys who have already won, go to another team, now older they seem to lose the drive a bit. -
Any good coordinators for HC out there?
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to Geno Smith's Arm's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Head coaches need to be more of a gambler. I think it's harder for DC to become good HC for that reason. -
How about Bill Parcells?
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to HelloNewman's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Parsells was a good coach who THINKS he's a good gm. Yes he can turn things around to some level. Though in the case of Dallas, how much improvement was there (or drop off afterwards) and Miami really wasn't as bad as they looked the year prior, so easy to see improvment there. It also appears that with every job he's taken, he's had less desire to se things through. I certainly think he could make Buffalo better, but not sure it owuld be as much as needed. -
The impending Tsunami of lies
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to Kelly the Dog's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That's the problem, everyone seems to think the Bills (and all teams in all sports for that matter) are obligated to tell everyone exactly what their plans are. People are already complaining that we haven't signed someone yet and ripping the RW and the front office for it. We as fans and media are owed nothing! If you don't like that, stop buying tickets and watching the games. Other than that, let them do their job. -
Can We All Agree That If Shanahan
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to BuffaloBaumer's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It certainly makes sense for anyone to wait until the end of the year and the evaluate all the openings. The one problem with that stratagy is you just named the two likely top openings, Dallas and Washington. There are more than two coaches right now and by year end there could be more. So waiting to year end, you run the risk that you might end up being the odd man out. On the other hand, maybe you don't really want to work for Snyder or Jerry. RW can be difficult, but he's not in their league. Those guys also want the attention, I don't see RW wanting that. You could wait till year end and use them as leverage to drive up your price. -
as suspected - Perry is a moron
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to vegas55's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I thought about it at the time that they should take their timeouts to leave them some time. BUT if you use your times outs, lets say they stop Jax, then the Bills have 1st and 10 on their own one yeard line with like 2 minutes to go. If you used your time outs then Jax didn't need to use theirs. More than like we'd run into the middle three times, which most teams with the lead and on your own one yead line would do the same. So Jax takes their time outs and we're now punting from our own one yard line with maybe over one minute left. We're only up five so taking an intentional safety is out as then a field goal would tie it. Having said that I didn't think letting the clock go was so bad as if you stopped them and we then were stopped, there wasn't going to be much time left for Jax to get the ball back with. I've seen teams in simular situations take time outs, but usually is when there's less than one minute or so to go. -

Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to downsoufbfan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
What second link? I tried every link that was posted on this tread and the only thing I saw that worked was the one that died, the Ruby something. So don't know link you're even talking about. That's the problem here, understand the more you the link the odds of it getting shut down go up. But if you don't post it, first off, someone on some other site will anyway, second if no one can see it kind of defeats the point of streaming it. -

Bills fans need to pull for Cowboy wins
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to LA Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The Miami game was the year prior, that year Flutie was great. But by the next season, teams had him figured out, take away the middle, make him throw to the outsdie. With his arm, he was in trouble. The Bill's won alot that following year, but was more in spite of Flutie rather than because of him. If I recall he had one real good game that year after about week 4 or so, the rest were nothing special that you felt you could go far in the playoffs with his play at QB. -
Would Jim Kelly Make a Good OC?
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to Canadian Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If they let me, I'd stand on the sideline too, so would that make me a good choice too? There's a big differecne between standing on the sideline and cheerign vs putting in 18 hour days for what he'd consider chump change. -
So who should be leading the search? RW John Guy?? I think he's the best qualified person. He only has been in ay type of footbal lrelated situation since Marv left. And even that is questionalbe exactly how much of the decisions have been RB vs JG or TM.
-
Makes perfect sense to me. The last time when TD was president, the problem was he had all authority. If you bring in a Cowler type, having RB as pres, gives someone else a bit of control over things so we don't have a repeat of th eperson in charge ripping up fans signs. I'm not sure RW really even wants to be in the spot, but felt he didn't have any other choice. Actually I've been suggesting this for quite awhile Sully must have stole my idea.
-
Does that cause total turmoil?? Seems to me I recall scouts contracts typically expire May 1st, so you're never in a poition of changing scouting type people two months before the draft. Firing them now, particually for Modrak would cause issues around how do you scout players for next Aprils draft? Seems I recall when TD came in the person who was responsiple for the draft stayed through the first one, then he left. Can't recall the name anymore but think he followed Butler to San Diego then. I think whoever the new GM is, we may see a similar thing for TM. The GM doesn't have to follow TM's suggestions either. But he can still use his scouting reports. On the other Guy could be fired anythime, thouhg probably best to wait until we have a new GM in place.

I'm not sure I'd put Singletary on that list and I wouldn't put Caldwell or McDanials there either based on 9 games. Even Sparano is a question mark. Having said that I understand your point. The one problem with your theory is how do you know when you have that right guy? For every Tomlin, there are four or five Greg Williams, up an coming coord. who failed as a head coach. Even Belicheck would be on that list based on Cleveland. So the one advantage I see in hiring in name guy is he does have a track record. On the other hand look at a guy like Tony Dungy. Is he a great coach or an OK coach who looked great because he was working under one of the best GM's in the league? I don't think Bill's fans are willing to wait it out to find out if an upcoming assistant is the real deal or not. I've always believed the key to sucess is hiring a good GM, so to me that is the more important move. With a good GM and coach would look good as I mentioned earlier about Dungy.
