Last time I checked John Fox was still the coach in Carolina. If the Bills did ask if he'd be interested, that would be called tampering. I know it's a big word, if you need help, I could look up the meaning for you. All these guys you mention as great head coaches all started out just like Williams, Mularkey and whomever we may end up hiring this time. They were coordinators that someone took a chance on. The difference was they worked out, though you could argue that it took Cowler a long time, longer than many teams would have waited. I think a bigger reason that they worked and Williams and Mularkey didn't was they had better players to work with which is a function of the GM. Actually I'm of the opinion that coaching is over-rated, and the GM job is under-rated. Get good players and everyone looks much smarter. For example, what did Marv Levy do prior to coming to Buffalo? There are many other similar situation in various sports, teams who lost for years, hired a good GM and things turned around. It's also been documented that any recycled coach over 50 has never won much the second time around either. They are respectable which certainly would be a huge improvement, but I believe at most only one of them has ever won it all. o be careful what you wish for.

First off you don't know that Nix has never hired a coach. He's never hired an NFL head coach. Has he hired coaches at other levels, who knows. I'm also sure he was involved with the hiring process in San Diego and other locactions he's been at. The bills just did delagte football decisons to a football person, his name is Buddy Nix. Just becasue you read in the paper here that Nix and RB will run it by RW to get hisfinal approval doesn't mean things are any different with other teams. It is amazing how smart people on message boards think they are. It's even more amazing that most of them aren't already coaching in the NFL.

And what makes you know what you're talking about either?? I think the past two seasons after Levy left, TM was calling the shots, prior to that the final decision was made by Levy, though I think he did value the opinion of others. When TD was in charge, from everythign you saw of how he handled thingsa, there's no doubt he made the final call on whom to select. I'm certain they all took TM and other scouts suggestions under advisement, but the final call was made by the GM until RB, then he did likely defer to TM.

Will he be convicted, not likely, is there more to the story, maybe. Does it sound weird yes, to wierd to believe. But I've gone through life believing when someone comes up with a story that you could never imagine happening, it usually is true as no one would ever think anything up so wierd. The fact that the womans wife is a cop makes it more believiable in my mind as I'm sure he asked her 10 times to tell her exactly what happened, is she sure she wasn't leaving anything out, and likely grilled her as hard as he would any suspect as he'sseen first hand many phoney stories told. And yes he most definitely is as you descirbed: getto, scumbag, thug, A-Hole, and illiterate to name a few. In fact he's worse than most getto thugs as he has money so figures he can just buy his way out of anything.

He's not all that busy these days as the team he coaches at the senior center only practices one day a week.

Didn't realize Reid signed an extension that recently. In that case I agree he'll likely survive. I agree totally Kraft would never fire BB, but I still could see him resigning, where he just feels he's had enough. Will see, if not this year, one of these years may happen. There's usually always one surprise every year, last year was Gruden.

Of the eight teams playing this weekend, how many of them could get fired as a result of losing their first playoff game?? My take, the coaches of the following teams are safe regardless of what happens: Jet's Bengals Ravens Arizona Green Bay I think if Dallas loses Wade Phillips is likely gone The one that could come as a surprise might be Philly. Reid's been there for a number of years and overall has maybe .500% record in playoffs. There's speculation that if they lose their first playoff game, they may also want to get rid of McNabb, however it also sounds like Reid isn't to keen on that idea, so maybe you dump Reid just to start over with Kolb. Things may be gettign stale in the city of brotherly love. The last one is New England. Win or lose I doubt BB would be fired, but wouldn't shock me to see him walk away either. He may be reaching burnout. I'm sure he realizes the team is in decline, so maybe decides it's a good time to step away while his legacy is still intact. Will see what happens next week.

At the time when he hired JJ, getting full control by these coaches wasn't as much in demand. Now it is. Plus JJ had no NFL experience, so couldn't command to much pull

It may be good timing but not allowed. Coaching changes are not allowed to be announced during the weekends of playoff games. The reasoning is they want all the attention on the games, not other things. Hey I don't make the rules, the NFL does.

I wonder at the end of the 2010 season if teams would fire their coach if desired, but not hire a new one until CBA is settled? They could all agree to it as a group. Can't claim collusion as no union involved with the coaches.

Yes, but the last two years, I highly doubt he was going to RB and RB was making that call. I'd be shocked if it weren't as case of RB telling Guy, I'll go with your reccomendation. If John Guy is a great talant evaluator this concept would work great. The problem is he wasn't very good at it. When Marv and TD were here, agree, it likely went to them.

Actaully I believe with the exception of GM most most front office contracts in May, the reason so they can finish up with the draft and FA "season" then you let them go. Nix right now is too busy with hiring a head coach to worry about TM and JG. Once he signs a coach he likekly will then sit down for extensive brain dumps from both of them to gleam as much info as he can from them about entire organization, whom they feel shold be kept, sign extentions, etc. He doesn't necessarily have too follow their recommendations, but it can't hurt to hear what they think. You've paid them all year, you may as well get something out of it. After all that come May, I agree John Guy will be gone. Per comments above, no not cowardly, doing what makes the most business sence and what can potenitally make you stronger in the future. Learn what they know, then be done with them. (In Guy's case that may not take long) All scout type contracts expire in May for all teams, so these guys could still easily have time to hook up with another team. I also wouldn't be surprised that by sometime in April after the draft they are told their contracts will not be re-newed and they are allowed to talk with other teams, even though they still work for the Bills until May 1. I recall TD knew that RW was letting him go at the end of his contract and wouldn't be re-signed, but he still stayed as GM till year end.

I don't think the way Richardson is messing with Fox right now makes him look like a real great owner to work for either. If anything it makes him out to be the type who isn't going to spend the extra $$. In Washington or Dallas, they'd just eat the $6mil owed Fox without batting an eye. Here they are playing games trying to force him to quit to avoid paying him.

So what would you like them to do instead? If you believe everything you read, which you must as that's what your post is based on, the Bills are trying to sign Cowler, but he turned them down. Shan turned them down and went to DC. Gruden is out of the picture. OK Billick is interested, do you want him. Marv Levy I'm sure would be interested. Just remember, every great coach started out as an inexperienced coordinator named head coach. Dick Jaron was an experienced coach, that worked well. The odds are against you as you likely will higher two coordinator who don't work out for every good one that does. They could hire a college HC, but again the odds of that working in the NFL are about the same, maybe even worse as off the top of my head I can't think of any successful NFL coaches who started out as a successful college coach. I'm sure the Bills would like to higher Cowler, but if he says no, what other options do they have other than taking someone without head coaching experience. Personnally I think coaching is way over rated. On the other hand the GM role is underrated. Give any coach exceptional talent and he'll look like the next Bill Walsh. Marv Levy did little before he got to Buffalo, now he's in the hall of fame. Did he suddenly learn to coach or was it the players? So many teams in all sports have floundered for years until the got a good personal man, Giants of the 80's; Mets of the 80's; the Bills in the 90's; the list goes one. If Nix is able to build a team like he was able to HELP put together in San Diego and Buffalo, we will be in great shape. Granted he wasn't the GM in those other roles, so can he do it as the top man, we will see, but that is the key.

Actually there is only a Corning flight every two weeks from NC and it's on Mondays and Thursdays. There also is a flight everyother Wednesday from their plant in Kentucky to Elmira. There is one everyday though from NJ to Elmira.

OK, Cowler is from Carolina, (or is it his wife) so he want's to coach at "Home" Can understand that. But why go to a team where supposedly the owner is trying to sell, he just fired his own two kids this year, (or did they resign, can't recall which) but was under a bit of shady terms it seemed. He's trying to screw John Fox out of a years pay by playing games and trying to make the conditions so bad he'll resign to avoid paying him. Richardson isn't exaclty known as a big spender either. The only two advantages Carolina seems to have is; it's home, and probably a better roster than the Bill's but also older, which in todays NFL doesn't take much to go from a vet team to over the hill. So why would he run to Carolina if offered the job? Why is that job much better than Buffalo other than the reasons mentioned?

I think RB and Nix have alot more respect than you think. Is RB respected as a football wizard, no, but I think he's done a pretty good job overall at what he does know. Four years back RW was the laughing stock of the football world for being one of two owners who voted agaisnt the CBA. One of his quotes was he didn't understand it. So how smart are the rest of the owners who voted for it, only now to opt out. Seems like RW is way ahead of the times. If the majority of the posters on this board were half as smart as RW, they'd be doing well.

By any chance did you listen to his press conference. He talked about how you need to draft players who can play in this climate as opposed to small fast guys. So I think he's a little bit ahead of you on that one. Kent Hull was from Miss; Bisquit was from I believe Alabama Brett Favre has played most of his career in Green Bay, so really not much truth to that at all. If anything the opposite has been true to some extent. While the weather in Buffalo certainly is nothing like down south, many southerners do like the small town, slower pace, charm of western NY. Just ask Willis McGhee As Jim Boeheim once said Hawaii is just like Sryacuse in July! Well Buffalo is in the summer is just like the south, but without humidity. BTW I lived 32 years in Rochester, the last two in North Carolina. I've never felt so cold in the winter as I have the last two living down here. Heat pumps suck!

I've thought of the Marty replacing Guy idea too and like it. And OK with Modrak as head scout. I also have stated before that I also thought it was possible that many of Modraks suggestions as to whom to pick were not followed by TD or Marv. I think this year was one of their better drafts, no coincidnece that those two guys were gone. I also am of the opinion that RB wasn't involved in personal decesions, whomever TM wanted to pick RB would go along with. RB may have questioned his as to why or if everyone else in the room said X and TM said Y then again RB may have got more involved. If Marty were in that position may help with signing Cowler as supposedly they are friends.

If they had hired Nix last year as ther GM, then they would have brought an outside guy in for the GM job. But instead named him a scout, then a year later he's GM. Maybe all along thta was the plan but for whatever reason didn't want to initially name him as GM Everything written sounds like the person they interviewed was Guy. More than likey that was to fill the Ronney rule. How do you know it wan't a serious interview?? If RW thought highly of Guy and really considered giving him the GM position, I doubt he'd instead hire a guy who in his first interview kind of ripped the free agent signings the Bills have made in recent seasons.

It's been written in a few sources that Guy was the other finalist which makes sense as likely he was interviewed to fill the Rooney rule. Speculation on my part, yes, HOWEVER if RW was really considering him and felt he would have been a good choice, you wouldn't then give the job to a person who pretty much ripped the free agent signings we've made in recent years. I will be very surpirsed if Guy is around much longer, although I thought someplace in the past I read that the contracts of most front office positions excluding GM expire May 1st, the idea beign that they complete the scouting/signing phase before lettignthem go. I seem to recall when TD took over, many of the scouting positions stayed intact until after the draft. I almost think that may have been when Nix left the Bills.
