What RB cracks first?
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to Chicharito's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I agree I wouldn't pay him either mainly due to all the off field issues the guy has had. But the other side of it is he's a big part of the offense, without him, my guess is Dak will look very 2nd rate. Puts the Cowgirls in a tough spot. In San Diego Rivers will be fine without Gorden, better with him and Super Bowl contender with him, but they'll still be OK without. Dallas will likely go down the tubes without Elliott and Jason Garrett may as well start packing up his office now. Have a good one! -

OK if the standard NFL contract allows a person not to play, then agree not breach. Well from what I read of the original posts (which by now don't even recall the exact thing,) you were stating that based on simple contract law the player signed the contract so he needs to honor it. And my point is contract law and the NFL don't go together. Do I like it no, but have learned to accept it. Admittedly it is a sticky slope with non guaranteed contracts that allow the player to be cut anytime and the average career only being around 3 seasons. -

Sure sounds like breach of contract IF and a big if it's a cut and dry as you're arguing. I'm not an attorney either, but the one thing I do know based on observation over the past 10, 20, 30 years. Contract law and sports teams; don't try and talk about the two of them together. It a different world. Yes I get it, the player doesn't get paid. In this same conversation I heard on the radio about the fines disappearing, they also commented how it's much different for the player to not show up week 1 and miss a game check. That's where the rubber tends to meet the road. Kind of funny you mention player losing a year of service. That's always been a pet peeve of mine. The player sits out until I believe it's around week 10 or 12, then shows up completely out of game shape and useless to the team for the remainder of the year. But the team has no leverage other than to cut him. I'd like to see the next CBA if the player doesn't report week one, he loses the year of service, or after week 1, the team can tell the player, "it's nice that you now want to report, don't bother, we'll see you next summer" If the team is in a playoff race, they may take him, if not let him sit, but still own his rights. Highly unlikely this will ever happen, but would love to see something along those lines. -

So then explain to me why these guys are holding out then since sounds like they don't have a leg to stand on. It's applicable until the second the player holds out. Why doesn't their respective teams sue all these hold outs for breach of contract if it were so cut and dry as you seem to state? They were even talking last week on ESPN. So the one small piece of leverage the teams have is to fine the players for holding out. From what they said on the radio and these are ex players talking, the fines mysteriously disappear once the player comes back to camp. -

Contract law doesn't apply in sports. Sure in theory it does, but reality is something else! -
Agree give some of these others a shot first. I think you want the best 9 on the roster and let positions sort themselves out. Really can't see them trading for a backup unless it's a very low level trade like a Duke Williams type of guy who isn't likely to make the roster anyway for a backup tackle. May pick up a FA now, but would be surprised at a trade other than low level. Likely there will be better options available come roster cut down day, than using resources on a trade now.

Lets see how many miss the 3rd pre-season game first. I think many of these are training camp injuries. If this were regular season, they'd sit out most of the mid week practices, come back Thursday limited and be ready to go on Sunday. If any do become an extended thing and it's someone they do like, could see them IR'ing him to hide him without cutting him.

Cody Ford takes 1st reps at RG
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Wasn't that due to him having a torn ligament in his snapping hand? While I don't think he ever officially blamed it on that, would stand ot reason, that could make it difficult to snap the ball. -
WR battle heading into first preseason game
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to Alphadawg7's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'd think the opposite that forces them to keep another TE unless Kroft starts on PUP list which I think there's a good chance does happen. But even then may just mean the TE situation has no bearing on the number of WR's kept. Other name I've read has looked good is Easley. -
I think the other problem Rex had was other teams figured out his defense. So like any good coach Rex tweaked it, but think his tweaks took the defense to the point it became way too complicated to execute. Don't think he forgot how to coach, but that's where the ego part hurt him thinking this complicated scheme would work. He also was as they say a players coach, but you need a certain type of player for that to work with and usually a few years to develop it. Here it was becoming a frat house and Rex was just a hot mess. I really think that was what got him fired more than the record, things like wearing a Clemson helmet to a press conference, the excessive penalties, hirng his brother, making the captain for the Jet's game the guy who broke Geno's jaw, the list goes on.

Mitch Morse in concussion protocol
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to *******'s topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Thought I read he was on the sidelines already on Tuesday? That's only three days after. Seems if this was serious, they'd have him home in bed even if on the road to recovery. Just thinking it was very minor one. Still a concern, but he's not dead yet as some think. -
Mitch Morse in concussion protocol
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to *******'s topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Seems often when someone has a concussion, they are supposed to stay in a darkened room, try to minimize movement, etc. Morse was reported on the sideline the last two practices at camp. Makes me think this is a training camp level concussion. Not saying it's fake at all, but more like Morse told them I bumped my head a little. Great just to be extra safe, we'll put you in protocol. If this were regular season, he'd be playing. -
And moving him to guard is a bad thing?? So maybe he can continue at RT and be a top 10 or so RT, or move him to RG and he can be all pro. Or he could move inside for this seaosn, but next year go back to tackle as he gets more experience. Yes Beane and McD both liked him, if you want to say loved that's fine too. But don't recall either stating he will be RT and no where else will he ever play. If moving him to RG and playing Ng at RT puts the best five out there, why exactly is that a bad thing?
-
Did I read Morse was on the sideline yesterday at practice? Typically concussion protocol is to stay in a darkened room. Makes me think this is very minor, if this happened in two months, never would have even been reported. But if Morse stated "I bumped my head a a bit" at this point in camp, it's concussion protocol.

Bills bring back Brian Gaine
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to CNY315's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I know Houston can no longer sign him to a long term deal, his only option would be to play out he tag with them. But if he's traded, can another team immediately sign him to a long term deal or do they too have to wait until after the current season is over? -
Bills dead cap number '18 to '19
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to PromoTheRobot's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That kind of went without saying, yes the players must do well. Every team will have busts, but need more than 1/2 to become very good to excellent and a few superstars. Rest then you can supliment with draft pick turnover and mid level FA signing, plus maybe one top FA signing each year. You just need to be smart enough to know when the rookie contracts start to expire to not resign all them as some will not be worth it. If I had to predict right now who one might be, I'd pick Zay Jones. Think he may become decent to good, but not great. -

Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to PromoTheRobot's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I can see in next years draft the first three rounds picking up a LB, DE, WR, and OL. Between the 4 drafts plus FA signing, then the roster will be close to filled out the way they want it. After that will start to replace guys who are OK, but didn't pan out as good as expected. Or they are just no longer needed. Not really as very few have much invested, so can easily not re-sign or cut with little lost. The only ones costing much money would be Morse, Starr, Kroft, likely couple others I'm leaving out. -
DirecTv Sunday Ticket- Potential big issues
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to Walking Tall's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That was one thing I did notice since ATT bought DTV, the discounts have become fewer and farther between, wth the discounts the prices weren't too bad. That was what finally made me dump them, my discounts expired and basically wouldn't give me anything new. So left, two weeks later they made me an offer to come back, much better than I was even asking for. But by then had purchased a TIVO so wasn't going back. -
DirecTv Sunday Ticket- Potential big issues
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to Walking Tall's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The games are broadcast nationally by CBS and FOX, then local affiliates, then pick it up to broadcast locally to them. So as was stated, you'll just lose the local games. But for the OP living in the Birmingham area, could be many Bills games. Certainly the locals are either going to pick up the Bills, or Jet's or Giants. Since the 1st two games they play each other, an antenna may be the only option. I live in NC and about 5 years ago DTV and the local NBC station had a little tiff and was off the DTV lineup. But shockingly the contract was resolved about three hours before kickoff and the games were on. About 3 years ago, last year I had DTV as a matter of fact, same thing happened with local FOX network. Figured same thing would happen and all would be resolved by opening kickoff. Not this time. Went on about 3 to 4 weeks into the season no games on Fox. The remaining games were all on DTV in the 800 range, but whatever games were broadcast locally, you were out of luck unless you had an antenna. So wouldn't say it will be worked out! Just remember, DTV is doing this for you the consumer so the local stations don't charge unreasonable broadcast fees!! Call your local stations and complain to them!! What I don't understand is this happens once in awhile with cable, but seems like it's becoming a regular thing and for longer periods of time with DTV. Not that it bothers me as 2 1/2 years ago dumped DTV, now have an antenna with TIVO and good old Reddit for their version of Sunday Ticket. -
