Did we land a top 5 GM in Beane?

yup he called up from the Panthers war room and suggested the Bills trade down with KC thus passing on Mahomes -
Too many draft picks this year
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to Gisele's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I agree that 10 picks does sound like too much. I'd like to see them move up assuming we can find someone will to trade say the 5th or 6th overall for our 9th overall, plus our two 7 rounders, our 2 5th rounders, and say one of our fourths. Do you you think there'll be any takers? (Maybe Gettlemann) Assuming no one goes for that, too move up that far would likely require us trading our 2nd rounder too. So then we're left with a top 5 pick but no other top talent, don't like that option much either as do feel we way more than one player away from the Super Bowl. As has been mentioned, could use maybe four solid players from the draft. Personally I'd prefer to see us trade down to around 16, pick up an extra 2nd, then trade back to late in the 1st round (around #25) for our own 2nd, plus 3rd or even better, our own 2nd, plus our two 4ths and even throw in a 5th.. That would still leave us with 2 firsts, a second, and two fourths or 2 firsts, a second, a 3rd and no fourths. -
Completely disagree!! The point of acquiring good players is to have them make the final roster and play in meaningful games starting in September. Yes that's fine if every position on your roster is flush with talent, but if there's some positions like say LB ,safety, or even punter where you can bring in a rookie and there's a pretty high chance they make the roster, that's better than having 12 guys completing for 9 O-line slots or 5 to 6 WR slots and cutting the rest. In nothing else, you wasted the signing bonus I'm guessing at least one of these lineman they've just signed will be cut or maybe Teller, but he's on a cheap rookie contract so more incentive to keep him than a higher priced backup unless much, much better in talent. If it's a 5th or 6th round pick can likely hide that guy on the practice squad. Or you hope maybe the higher draft pick that is at a position with depth, you hope he gets a hang nail so can hide him on IR for a year.

The First Game of the year
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to foreboding's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Interesting in that yesterday they came out with the comment that the Bills are only expected to win 6 games, but looking at that schedule, unless some team comes out of the gate and really surprises, can see them either being the favorite or a slight underdog in 8 games. Another four they may be a 4 to 5 point dog which likely will win 1 or 2 of them admittedly they likely won't win all 8 where they are favorites either. The only games where I see them being a more prohibitive underdog are the two NE games, the Eagles, and maybe they Cowgirls. 9-7 doesn't seem that hard with this schedule, but there's always a couple of surprise teams every year, and who knows this year the surprise may be in Buffalo! -
Yes but what does bode well for Jones and easily negates not being a starter or playing special teams is he's still on a cheap rookie contract. Likely will take one or maybe two of these other guys to clearly outplay him in camp that he drops down to around #7 on the depth chart t obe cut. The other thing that could hurt him is I do believe the Bills will draft a TE, that would leave them with four including the converted tackle they signed last week. If they decide to go with four TE's that likely will reduce the number of slots for WR. I'd say there's a much better chance he's not on the Bills opening day roster because he gets traded, but not because he gets cut. If the Bills were to make two trades between now and opening day, will be surprised if Zay isn't part of one of the trades. How about the Bills sign one of the FA DE they've been talking with then trade Zay and Lawson and a 4th rounder for AJ Green

Barring a really bad collapse, see them making it at least to 2020, if then were real bad the next two years, can see McD getting fired, but GM's often get to go through two coaches, so could see Beane still hanging on and hiring another coach. Worst case Allan's a failure so the team is also terrible, but if you fire him for that, you better plan to fire many others too as the success rate for QB's is less than 50/50 to begin with.

I doubt 11 wins gets you XX of the year as there will be some surprise team that does much better than expected. Even a team like Green Bay, they made some additions, say they win 13 games, they'd get more consideration IMO. Assuming Allan improves a fair amount, win 10 games this season good draft this year and next, plus a handful more FA signings next season think either of them getting the award in 2020 is more reasonable.

The one down side of that is you don't then give the 5 players you go with enough time to jell. I think that was a big problem the Bills had last year in training camp, the constant juggling of their line, and same thing at QB. No one got enough reps with the first team. I realize these guys are all vets so likely don't need as much time, but with today's CBA rules it limits the amount of work you get. Let the compete for a couple of weeks of camp, but would like to see them settle on the starting five by 3rd pre-season game. Or be OK with sub par line play the first couple weeks of the season. I can see some of these signings not making it through camp. Excluding Morse, did we give any of them much of a signing bonus, how much of a cap hit will we have if we cut a couple of them? I'm guessing it's not high, but will be something. No it works, just may not get the intended results!

Shaq Lawson 5th year option
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to Bleeding Bills Blue's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Do you think the Bengels would go for a trade of Lawson and Zay Jones for AJ Green. Would the Bills have to throw in another mid level pick, maybe one of their 4th? Antonio Brown went for a 3rd and 5th was it?? -
I'm guessing the big thing is he's not getting paid like he was anymore and maybe see's that these new things he's been doing since leaving BN just aren't getting big enough to make a career out of it. For Jerry, this is like a part time retirement gig for him, so likely money doesn't matter very much. I believe Jerry is over 70 so already collecting SS, his biggest worry is how will he spend all the money he needs to take to satisfy his RMD.

Think the difference with Beane is he's not scout and didn't come up that route. He has a handle on all phases of the job and has been involved wit hall the parts up to and including getting coffee for other coaches etc. Think it's easier for a GM to rely on others for the scouting and concentrate on the financial part of the job as opposed to be heavy into the scouting yourself as likely if you're a scout you think anyone can do the financial part of the job. While I suspect someone with Beanses background is goign to know he needs input from the scouts.

Shaq Lawson 5th year option
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to Bleeding Bills Blue's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Thought I read awhile back they can pick it up, but if he doesn't step up this season can just as easily still cut him after this year? -
I'm wondering if Fisher will also be used as a backup tackle and will practice some with O-line. To me if that is the case he has a higher likely hood of making the team. I'd have thought they'd sign/draft one good receiving TE, so far signed two good blockers, Croom isn't a bad receiver based on his experience, but not a true TE. Assuming they still draft or sign J Cook that gives them their true TE receiving threat so unless it turns out Fisher is a better receiving threat than Croom, can see Fisher getting cut unless he's also viewed as backup tackle and maybe even as the OP asked FB too.

Tackle at #9, Dawkins to LG
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to Estelle Getty's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Really doubt they will stay #2 overall when only starting 10 guys! Wait if they start 10 on D can they go with 12 on offense?? -
I don't care what your job is CEO of a Fortune 500 company, NFL GM, or a ditch digger, there will always be parts of everyone's job that they enjoy more than other parts and tend to do a better job at that part, it's the fun part. For Whaley, I too think it was the scouting part, which may have caused the business part to suffer as a result and not get as much attention as needed. Always thought that was true of John Butler too. he enjoyed the scouting part and tended to often over pay for players as he didn't have the time or desire to spend on the negotiation part.

Currently the team has 2 TE's on the roster, the new guy and Croom, teams typically carry 3 so if you sign Eifert, you're at three. I'd rather see them draft a TE and go with the two they have now. At least Croom has stayed healthy and is likely no matter how much of a prove it deal it is, still much cheaper option and for the past two years has had better stats. Infact when looking at his career stats, there was only one year Eifert was really good.
