Coaching Success as Measured by Average Depth of Playoff Run
Chaos replied to Chaos's topic in The Stadium Wall
Lafleur has only been there since 2019. He went 13-3, 13-3, 13-4 and made the championship game twice. Did Aaron Rodgers best years really start in 2019 when he was 36? -
Coaching Success as Measured by Average Depth of Playoff Run

I am not sure there is a ton to be gleaned. Its not an analysis of how good a coach it. It may be worth noting that 3 of the top 4 had Hall of Fame QBs on the roster for much of their success. Sean McVays run is remarkable compared to all others, when you consider the QBs he has had to work with. -

Whats your proof? One bad season? Or something else? -
From my personal perspective, I like watching the Bills play every week of the season. During the four year Super Bowl run, I got to watch the Bills play every week. This was more important to me than winning the Super Bowl (would like to win one though some day). I was curious which coaches (with their current teams) where the most successful at extending their teams seasons. Please note, this is not an assessement of which coach is "best". Vince Lombardi was the same quality coach in Washington as he was in Green Bay, just less successful. It is just an objective measure of success. The first thing that startled me was that the NFL currently has 12 rookie coaches. NFL owners/gms are not a patient group. In terms of extending the season, a bye is the same as a playoff game for this measure. I was surprised to realize that Matt Lafleur is the most successful by this measure without actually getting to the Super Bowl. It also appears that the Steelers are by far the most patient ownership.

To win a championship, you have to win a bunch of games in a row against playoff teams. At that point the first 17 games don't count. Hopefully at some point we can win 3 or 4 of those in a row. -
Josh Allen is much closer to perfect than you.

Just Gonna Say It: Von Miller was very good, but not great this year.

fair point. Imagine a world were we traded for Davante Adams instead of signing Von Miller. -
Expecting a return to form for Allen this week.

Allen played like a top 10 QB while injured. Last week he returned to top 2 form. If Dorsey gets it together this week, Allen will be the offensive player of the week. -

Each time we get in the #1 seed position or close to it, we fail. I am not talking about crushing a ***** Steelers team in week 3. I am talking beat a good team you should best when something meaningful is on the line and you are in first place. -
There is no circumstance where the rams pass on mayfield. It’s just silly to think they did it out of spite.

This game is a great sports psychology study. The Bills should bear the Jets at home fairly easily. In the past several years the Bills have struggled being front runners. A win in this game is evidence they have overcome this psychological block. -
Rams needed a QB. Who available was better than Mayfield?

2018,2019,2020,2021,2022. You are correct year five.

Imagine an alternative universe where we signed davante adams rather than Von Miller -
Would the Bengals Defensive Blueprint Work Against Bills/Allen
Chaos replied to BillsGuyOutWest's topic in The Stadium Wall
What is the basis for the bolded part. Guy has reasons, but 2022, does just not seem to be his year. -
the bold part is the most unproven part of the McDermott regime. He has not demonstrated the ability to " everything had to go just right at the right time" Maybe it is all just luck. But for about 20 years, the AFC super bowl participating QB was Tom Brady , Peyton Manning or Ben Rothlisberger. (brief rich gannon, joe flacco interludes). Each of the big three has won super bowls with more than one coach. In the current era, having Josh Allen for 10 years and not winning or even participating in a Super Bowl would be an epic failure and tragic. This is year 6. Bills winning the Super Bowl, and McDermott coaches the Bills until he wants to retire in all likelyhood. A failure to make the super bowl this year and being the Bills or Bengals supplicants, would be another chapter in a sad story. Or maybe Josh Allen isn't one of the best two QBs in football.

We used to have a different word for "toxic work culture". In the old days we called it "a job". Toxic Work Culture 1950: Toxic Work Culture 2022: -
Should the NFL Expand the playoffs to 8 teams and eliminate byes?
Chaos replied to Big Turk's topic in The Stadium Wall
The NFL has a weird series of compounding advantages. For example head to head am for non-divisional opponents means that if two teams tie the home team in the h2h won, they can home field advantage again. That is not particularly fair. -
Name 16 teams that would not make the playoffs with Josh Allen as QB this year. If you can I will agree I was wrong.
-
Its not clear we will be playing any teams coached by Gregg Williams, Dick Jauron on Mike Mularkey in the foreseeable future. In real life they are all irrelevent. Bills fans are so used to total incompetence that average competence appears like greatness to them, and slightly above average competence appears irreplaceable. This perception problem workd in reverse when fans called for firing Wade Phillips after he did not deliver Marv Levy level results. Always better to follow Doug Marrrone and Rex Ryan, than to follow Marv Levy.

Everyone who plays the "Belichek sucks without Brady game" needs to realize that more than half the coaches with the NFL would make the playoffs with Josh Allen on the roster.
