Dan Campbell has made the Detroit Lions better and better and better, and turned them into a championship contender. Is he a gifted football mind?
-
It’s funny to laugh at the Jets but I actually do not like this. I wish they kept Douglas. Now they may find someone good, instead of a known mediocre quantity.

I think McD is a good defensive coach. He’s a step below some of the great defensive coaches imo. i think McD’s leadership/program value to the Bills has exceeded his value as a defensive mind, personally. The defense was downright bad last year at points and rather than the team giving up at .500, they rallied and got the 2 seed. Thats where McD is special among most NFL coaches imo.

It's kinda funny how the NFL is when it comes to coaches. Really all that matters is their success. Culture setters/football guys. Teams like the Bills and Lions have gotten pulled out of the mire of generational terrible culture. McD got a weird/lucky playoff berth year 1 that lent him some credence. Campbell was on the hotseat starting off 4-19-1 in his first two seasons until things clicked and they have been 29-8 since. The problem with these dudes is that their messages grow old and stale if they don't start seeing results and their results do often vary as they are more program runners vs X's and O's savants. Then there's the gifted football minds. Shanny Jr, McVay, McDaniels, Flores. They have track records of good success as playcallers or play-designers, but their results vary if they are terrible leaders. Flores and McDaniels both can coach, at a high level, but their players inevitably hate them and things go sideways. The perfect fit of culture-setter and X's and O's is really rare. Those are usually HoFers. Reid, BB, Walsh etc etc.

I think the Bills may be better than the Ravens when healthy. their offensive gameplan worked great when we had Baylon Spector and Dorian out there trying to read and react. With Bernard, Milano and Taron out there, that gameplan won’t work nearly as well imo.
-
Ravens had a perfect gameplan that worked perfectly and the rest of the chips fell their way. Got a lead early, allowing them to stick with the run. Their stunts and simulated pressures gave the OL fits all game. Bills outside WR's weren't good enough to make them pay when they put Humphrey or Hamilton on Shakir and erased him. Offensive gameplan of the Ravens to attack the LB's and safeties, our weakest positions, all game. Honestly, it was good to face them early and lose. Gave the Bills some things to plan for next time if we meet them again in the postseason. But make no mistake. We didn't lose on purpose. We were outplayed, outcoached and dominated.

Head Coaching Vacancies - 2024/2025 Edition
FireChans replied to Coach Tuesday's topic in The Stadium Wall
I have heard was that Baalke may unbelievably survive again. I thought no way, but when you hear about the owner talking about how this is the most talented team in Jags history, he may view this as a coaching failure solely. The Raiders have experienced the “curse of the interim.” when Gruden left, the players wanted to keep Bisacchia, who got them to the playoffs. Ownership disagreed and went with McDaniels. Then when that obviously failed, the players said you have to keep Pierce now. They really screwed themselves. Not sure Bisacchia would’ve been good or not, but he was the reason they kept Pierce even though they shouldn’t have. -
I hear that. I was maybe higher on our chances to beat KC in the postseason eventually, so I don’t feel it was all that different. We trounced them off the field in 2021. The rivalry is real and has followed a similar script the last few games. It feels like a heavyweight bout instead of a shootout and the team that makes 2-3 more plays, wins.

You should read the post I quoted to start this discussion. -

Well that would probably be similar to the the Chiefs plan, seeing as they paid Hollywood Brown in the offseason. and the Bills may have planned to trade for a new WR all along. It also may have been their backup plan if Hollins/MVS/Samuel didn’t work out. We’ll unfortunately never know that part (although it would fly in the face of some HEATED arguments about if the WR’s were good enough week one lol) What we do know is MVS/Samuel gave Coleman a big opportunity. And the Hollywood Brown/Rice injuries gave Worthy a big opportunity. And both teams looked to give their rookies some help by the trade deadline. I guess I didn’t see the DHop trade as some major indictment of Worthy, just like I didn’t see the Cooper trade as some major indictment of Coleman. -

so I guess what I’m saying is those situations are more similar than you are trying to frame them. The expectation wasn’t for Worthy to be the man before the season. The Chiefs had a slew of injuries and eventually traded for DHop. The expectation for Keon wasn’t to be the man before the season. The Bills had a couple of their FAs not pan out and injuries and eventually traded for Cooper. What I said was that both rookies had the OPPORTUNITY to be the guy, because of injuries/their situation with the other WR’s on their team, and both teams eventually traded for more WR’s. Which is true. If Worthy was having a Tyreek Hill season, I’m not sure they trade for DHop. If Keon was playing like rookie JJ, I’m not sure the Bills trade for Cooper. That’s what I’m saying lol -
Not sure I agree with this. WR was immediate need this year and that’s who we took first. Last year was TE. So point to “non-need.” Year before was CB. That was immediate need with Tre coming off injury. Year before was DE. That was immediate need with Addison and Hughes at 100 years old. Year before was DE in round two. Kinda ditto. Year before was DT and RT in the top 2 picks. I think 3T and RT were probably right up there as needs. Year before was QB (always the biggest need when you don’t have one) and MLB (need) but that 2017 team was so bad that any pick was probably a need.

I mean, kinda, right? Both Coleman and Worthy had the opportunity to be the “man” outside through the first couple weeks of the season, and by the trade deadline, both teams decided to trade for another outside WR which in theory would take some of the pressure off them. How else would you describe the scenario that preceded the Cooper/DHop trades? -
Not sure this is the game to sing the praises of the OL. They couldn’t get much of a push going in the run game at all. Now the KC DL is great so you can’t really hold that against them either but it is what it is. Josh also was making them looking good by dodging Chris Jones every time he flattened Edwards, which happened at least a handful of times. All in all, it was a solid performance against a great defense. And I think this OL has an argument as the best OL in Josh’s career here. I don’t think they are elite by any means however. Will probably be unpopular, but that’s my take.

Benford, Bernard & Shakir…re-sign all of them?
FireChans replied to LabattBlue's topic in The Stadium Wall
Keep Benford and Bernard. Re-signing Cook would be really silly but hey, at least we'll get to laugh about the reactions. -
Warner since 2023: 8 FF, 6 INT, 3.5 sacks, 0 FR, 9 TFL in 27 games Bernard since 2023: 0 FF, 5 INT, 7.5 sacks, 4 FR, 14 TFL in 24 games

Meh, I’ll admit I may be wrong about Daboll, but “not being able to build a sustainable winning football program with Daniel Jones” isn’t gonna be the reason why.

Couldn’t you say something similar about Coleman pre-Cooper? -
He might be but it’s a mistake. The most important thing for the Giants’ success was DJ becoming a good starting QB. Not retaining a good 28 year old running back. The ownership wanted Jones to succeed and hired Daboll to fix him. They weren’t ready to accept he wasn’t the guy. Schoen/Daboll got him weapons, improved his OL, and he still stinks. They should get a shot with their own QB imo. The Barkley thing is a total red-herring. The Giants would still be terrible and benching Jones with him.

Like I said, bad business lol -

Penn just does bad business. They overpaid for a piece of BS thinking it was their gateway to a new market to outpace DK or Fanduel. Then they buy the rest of the company for almost 400M, and 6 mo later give it away lol.
