Is DT Gerald McCoy done in Tampa?
Florida Bills Fanatic replied to Tipster19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If all the Bills were missing was a QB, I would agree with you. Unfortunately, the rest of the roster is pretty thin. I hope you are correct but I don't see it happening. I keep reading that Beane is building for sustained success. That indicates to me that he will not go after high cost, high impact free agents in order to make a serious run to the Super Bowl. He doesn't seem inclined to jump to short term solutions that jeopardize long term success. I don't necessarily like that approach but it appears to me that this is the approach that he is taking. By the way, the tremendous talent he gave up (Darius, Glenn, and Taylor) didn't do much in the league this season and would not have changed Buffalo's season either. -
I was in the third row at the goal line and had a great unobstructed view of the play. Clay was late in his reaction to the ball and just played it poorly. He flat out dropped a catch that you would expect an NFL player to make. There was no defender in the play. You are absolutely correct about the playing surface there. Both teams were having trouble with it during the entire game. With all of the money that has been spent to improve that stadium, one would think that some improvement of the playing surface would have been made.

I think his play has declined over the last couple of years. I was at the Bills game in Miami this year and saw his drop at the goal line at the end of the game. His effort was pathetic. I also saw the reaction of McD when the ball hit the ground. He had the look of a guy who had seen enough. If I had to bet, I believe he will be gone.

Is DT Gerald McCoy done in Tampa?
Florida Bills Fanatic replied to Tipster19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
He is likely to be a cap casualty. He is still a very good player. Bean won't be interested, if he is looking for big money and a longer term contract. Realistically, Bean appears to be constructing the team to make a run in 2020 and 2021. McCoy's best years will be behind him by that time. As much as I like McCoy as a player, I don't expect it to happen. -
The Raiders have bungled this move tremendously. That being said, the blame for the move rests clearly on the city of Oakland and the state. The team has tried to get support to build a new stadium in Oakland for several years. When they changed their focus to a move away from Oakland, they had little trouble finding a good deal. Having had the misfortune to attend a game in that stadium, I don't blame Davis for taking this extreme measure. As some other posts have indicated, there are options. The Chargers had to deal with this problem and did not have great options either.

I'm in the no chance camp also. Running backs from later rounds have excelled all over the league in the recent past. Teddy's got this right in my opinion. Free agent signings will set the stage for what Beane will do in the draft. He might even pull off a trade to fill one of the obvious needs. Beane has been fairly unpredictable.

Daniel jeremiah top 50 prospects #1
Florida Bills Fanatic replied to DJB's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
He worked in scouting and personnel. He works in broadcasting on the NFL network now. He is considered by many to know what he is doing and has a lot of contacts in the league. His assessments of draft talent are probably as good as anyone's this early in the process. -
Great move and necessary to keep a young team moving in the right direction.

It would be interesting to see the data at different yardage intervals. It seems that being behind the sticks as much as Allen was, would require him to make longer throws more often. Longer throws with a bad o line equals a lower completion percentage. Rosen probably has the same issue. When you look at Trubisky, Mariota, Prescott and some others, Allen does not look all that different. Yet, you don't hear the sports media harping on their accuracy the way they do Allen. As some of you already observed, some NFL caliber linemen and receivers can make a big difference. For those of you who haven't had to endure the likes of Todd Collins, Trent Edwards, JP, and Johnson; Allen is a breath of fresh air.

Hackett and Pettine United again
Florida Bills Fanatic replied to billvernsays's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Objectively looking at Hackett's body of work, it is amazing that he can continue to find gigs in the NFL. Pettine is a class act and would have easily found another job if GB had cut him loose. It was a smart move to keep him. -
I'm inclined to agree with the cut Clay and keep Shady crowd. I'm not sure that the activity during free agency will shape the decision on either player. The FO probably has already made their decision on both and we won't know until they pull the trigger. People seem to be obsessed with the idea that some team will want to trade for McCoy. I can't think of any recent trades where teams acquired a 31 year old running back coming off the worst season of his career. It seems highly improbable to me.

O-line made it impossible to run consistently. Pass protection was also a joke. Look no further than Indianapolis to see what an improved O-line can do in a one season turn around. Their two backs are dime a dozen guys and had good seasons because of excellent line play. We can only hope the FO does its homework and brings in the right free agents and/or draft picks.

Is Rex Ryan done in the NFL ?
Florida Bills Fanatic replied to PUNT750's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If you were a GM, would you put your job on the line to hire Rex as your head coach? I doubt there are any current GM's that would. -
Jets select Adam Gase as HC
Florida Bills Fanatic replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Gase is like the punch line of the worst joke you ever heard. You want to forget it but it's so bad that you can't. His offense was a joke all year. After he was successful in getting rid of his best receiver (Landry), he proceeded to feed the ball to Frank Gore in one of the most predictable offenses in the league. Once in a while he'd give a touch to K. Drake, who would break off a huge scoring play. Drake was easily the most explosive player on the offense but was greatly underutilized. Gase couldn't seem to figure that out. I'm glad he's with the Jets. Like some other's, I'm glad they didn't hire McCarthy. -
With the addition of Duke Williams to go along with Jones and Foster, the starters for 3 wide receiver sets may now be on the roster. This makes wide receiver a little lower on the draft priority. Isabella or someone like him makes some sense. Getting a player with the potential for creating a big impact with a lower draft pick would be great. The versatility of Jones to play in the slot or outside, makes the pick of Isabella a workable option. The free agent moves that the Bills make, will also provide an indication of their future draft direction. I don't believe that there will be any great free agent receivers available that will sign with the Bills for a reasonable amount of money. I don't think paying big for a thirty year old receiver is in any of the Bills plans either.

Buffalo's reputation amongst free agents
Florida Bills Fanatic replied to clayboy54's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I wouldn't disregard the impact of a bad visitor locker room, I think there are a number of other factors that probably come into play. The treatment of the players (contracts, coaching, etc.) is important. Having a good relationships with agents is huge. Agents are more likely to point their clients in our direction, if they have a positive opinion of the overall organization and the community. With the home game atmosphere, players like to have a full stadium with crazy fan support. Buffalo has a great atmosphere. Some of the posts knock the stadium. I've been to a number of other stadiums that don't measure up to what is already in place in Buffalo. If anyone doubts that, go to a game in Tampa, Jacksonville, or New Orleans (the Super Dome isn"t exactly super).
