  1. Throat cancer is what got my Dad. Rich Eisen announced Mortensen's passing as they were concluding their combine coverage. Daniel Jeremiah broke into tears talking about what he meant to him. He said they were texting each other throughout the day yesterday about draft prospects. He was a real pro until the end. RIP and thank you, Mr. Mortensen.
  2. They jumped a number of teams not just the Bills...including Denver which did draft a wide receiver in that round.
  3. Rice was taken in the second round and there was no guarantee the Bills would have drafted a WR in the second round after grabbing Kincaid in the 1st.
  4. No. It means that KC moved on from players that weren't worth hanging onto at high salaries and that were easily replaceable despite playing in a SB. The argument has been that KC is somehow brilliant in their team management when in truth their core group that has kept them on top has been small: Mahomes, Kelce, Jones, and I would for now add Butker. Those players are the big difference makers. Tyreek was...but he was demanding too much to keep, especially knowing they would need to pay those dollars to Jones. So with the draft picks they got for Tyreek, they rebuilt their defense supplementing with players on one year deals. By comparison, the Bills initially built through free agency...Hyde, Poyer, Philips, Settle, Morse, etc. Some of those players have made a difference but now have gotten older and injured such that they no longer make a difference. They did draft well in Allen, Tre, Milano, Dion, etc and added Diggs through free agency to help develop Josh. Beane has switched to one year deals in free agency and now with ten draft picks, has to hit on the majority to lower the cap for the foreseeable future. Beane has not been perfect. However he and McD have resurrected a team from the ashes and made them competitive in relatively short order. KC had a good team in place before Mahomes got there. They had a headstart on the Bills. The Von Miller contract has set us back, but the silver lining is that it will force the Bills to rely on their draft class sooner rather than later.
  5. Not all of the players you cited were draft picks of KC and all were easily replaced. I do agree that it has been free agency signings that have hurt the Bills the most cap-wise.
  6. I don't think Beane has made a habit of over-paying players...with the exception of Knox, which I still don't understand. The contracts for the most part are fair market value. If the idea is to draft and develop your own players, then second contracts are to be expected. Oliver's deal was a bargain as was Tre's ultimately. We let Edmunds walk. The free agent contracts...namely Von's was a stab at signing a difference maker that could get the Bills over the hump. It looked like it would until the Detroit game. So you definitely could question the free agent contracts and extending aging players. That is not a sustainable strategy.
  7. As I recall, shortly thereafter Jalen Ramsey got his extension etc. Tre's contract was actually quite the bargain. Additionally...I don't think trading Tre would have resulted in the huge draft haul KC got from Miami.
  8. I don't recall Tre White making public demands to be the highest paid corner in the league.
  9. Veach got a big benefit from the draft haul the Chiefs got for trading Tyreek Hill...who is an uncommon talent with his speed (albeit also a bit obnoxious). Hill initiated the whole thing with his ego and public comments. And of course the Dolphins saw the shiny object and gave up that draft haul. It would be interesting to see if the Bills had a "shiny object" not named Josh Allen, that was making public demands, what Beane would do.
  10. Hopefully Miami learned it's lesson by getting smoked twice by the Chiefs this year. Don't make deals that will come back and bite you in the arse.
  11. Detroit has drafted well. They'd be better served taking one of the top corners in the draft. They should be in a position to get one.
  12. The NFL Network especially! The Chiefs are great. We all get it. However...outside of KC fans...we're all tired of being reminded. As soon as I see them heading toward the KC love fest, I change the channel.
  13. I hope someone ponies up for Sneed as well. I just don't want KC to receive draft capital for him and that's my point. Go ahead and offer Sneed the big bucks as a free agent, but if he's tagged, keep your 1st round pick and draft a CB in the first round and let KC be on the hook for the big payout. I don't disagree that Sneed is an outstanding corner. However, haven't there been players that were probowlers on one team and just ordinary on the next? (Wasn't there a CB on the Panthers that did just that?) When I said difference maker, my point was a team has to ask itself will Sneed be the difference maker to propel my team into the SB? There aren't many teams that could say that...and in the meantime, you've just awarded KC more draft capital to replace him and save the huge cap dollars.
  14. They'd be foolish not to re-sign them both. Just as Beane said he'd like to re-sign all of the Bill's free agents, it's not feasible. In KC's case, it may be feasible but both Jones and Sneed will cost top dollar.
  15. He has a great supporting cast at KC in a Spags controlled defense. He could well be an effective corner on another team...but he may not be. I wouldn't give up a lot of draft capital to find out. I'd take a chance on KC either keeping him at a huge payday or letting him go.
  16. Teams would be foolish to trade for Sneed. Let KC threaten to franchise and trade him. He's not going to be a difference maker in any other team's secondary. Let KC franchise him and then be stuck with a huge deal in addition to what they have to pay Jones.
  17. I agree. There are plenty available that won't command too much. It makes sense to address those positions in the draft that carry large cap numbers...WR, DT, Edge, CB, OT and build those positions through the draft.
  18. One Bills Live just had Daniel Jeremiah on. He was talking about positions in this draft. He said the D line position drops off dramatically by the middle of the 2nd round whereas there is depth at WR. Based on the Bills needs he opined that at 28, you grab your Dline player Edge or Tackle and wait on your WR. The only exception he'd make is if Brian Thomas is there. His concern about Tony Franklin is his frame. He's like Tank Dell who had an outstanding year, but wasn't durable enough to be available in the playoffs. He thinks Adonai Mitchell will also show well at the combine and at his pro day or individual workouts. At Safety, he has none in his Top 50 players. He sees them mainly as depth pieces who will largely play on Special Teams as opposed to being immediate starters, although he did sight Tyler Nubin's productivity at Minnesota.
  19. L'Jarius Sneed is the Chiefs number one CB who had a season that rivaled Gilmore's best. They likely will unless Jones gets a lights out offer elsewhere. Still...if Jones is looking for $28M plus per season, that will tie up a lot of capspace.
  20. We signed a high priced vet in Miller...at a contract that ties the team's hands. Yes it looked good for a while. Then he got injured. We put more eggs in that basket than we should have. Sign a couple lower priced vets...but build through the draft.
  21. Hopefully Beane learned through this year's playoffs that the Bills need to provide Josh with more weapons to put more points on the board. Signing high priced vets to make a "difference" especially older vets...doesn't provide the difference you need to win.
  22. L'Jarius Sneed...their top CB. He just had a year similar to Gilmore's best!
  23. He has said in the past he wants Aaron Donald money. With his performance in the playoffs and this year...he should get paid more than Donald!
  24. Sneed and Jones will both now play hardball. No hometown discounts. They will want top dollar...which they deserve.
