Video of Kelly being drafted by bills
Nihilarian replied to Bills4life1924's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
A few things to add here. Kelly had severe shoulder separation in his senior season at the U and he needed pins inserted to keep it together. His doctors told him he might not ever have a full throwing motion again and this is a big reason as to why he dropped to #14 otherwise he fights Elway for that #1 spot IMHO. Just think if not for that injury Kansas City might have drafted Kelly instead of Blackledge. On another note, it was rumored that Dan Marino was a party animal at Pitt and he smoked weed. This rumor caused him to fall big time. Otherwise, he doesn't drop to #27 and the Patriots or NY Jets could have drafted Marino. Bills fans need to understand what it was like with Bills owner Ralph Wilson back in the late 1970s, early 1980s with a #1 overall pick in the 1979 NFL draft the Buffalo Bills picked LBer Tom Cousineau and instead he chose to go to Canada rather than play for Buffalo. The thing is, Buffalo had a complete moron for a GM in Stew Barber at that time and he set up a dinner in Buffalo with Cousineau and his agent and then never showed up. This was the start of bad negotiations and the financial difference came down to 100k. Needless to say that Clouseau was so put off by Barber and his antics he went to play for the Montreal Alouettes. Jim Kelly saw all this and knew about the Buffalo Bills owners cantankerous, frugal nature and he didn't want to play in obscurity all his career in Buffalo. Which BTW was entering a mass exodus as the city was losing jobs due to the steel mills closing. Speaking of this the city had this color and stench in the air from the Mills. Don't forget this about the same time the love canal hits the national media. Buffalo was the very last place so many NFL players wanted to play for back then. Bills fans should be so very grateful to Bill Polian who talked Wilson into making Kelly the highest paid QB in the league otherwise he might have held out for a trade. Back then, Raiders owner Al Davis sent Kelly to England with some Raiderettes in hopes of getting Kelly to ask for a trade. Let's not forget that the Buffalo Bills had traded "the fireman" QB Daryl Lamonica to the Raiders back in 1967 and he won some games for the Raiders. -
LaConjecture Says Six QBs in the 1st Round
Nihilarian replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I agree with at least six and perhaps more. Allen, Darnold, Mayfield, Rosen, Jackson, Rudolph. Cleveland, NY Giants, NY Jets, Buffalo, Denver, Arizona all need looking to draft a QB. Then you have teams like the Patriots, Chargers, Seahawks, Ravens, Jaguars, Dolphins who already have a franchise QB and are looking to the future. I think at least four of this years QBs become starters and perhaps one or two future HoFers. Then you have Mike White, Luke Faulk who could also move up into the first round for some of these teams. -
Yes, the arm is amazing. But there is more to Allen than just his arm. Watch him in the senior bowl with much better talent on both sides of the ball then he is used to playing with. The kid shrugs off would be sackers like Big Ben and if given time to throw can put a camel thru a needle. It was at Wyoming when his line broke down usually before 2 1/2 seconds those bad things happened and Allen was forced to make the play work on his own...and that he did. Think about it, as Wyoming went 8-5 last year and won their bowl game. What happened at UCLA last year with a supposed better QB and a better supporting cast as they went 5-6 and lost their bowl game. UCLA had a receiver with 1264 yards, 9 TDs. The biggest thing Bills fans need to understand is Allen has already committed to becoming a more accurate QB since finishing college. Unlike some real bums, Jamarcus Russell, Ryan Leaf. The only way this kid busts is if the team that drafts him gets impatient and starts him right away on a bad team and the NY Jets look like that type of team, Cleveland also looks that bad. I hope the Bills move up to #2 to get him if the Browns don't select him #1 overall.

Thanks for posting. Listening to Allen talk with Mike Mayock on the NFL network after his combine workout Allen knew his footwork was a mess last year and is working to improve it. Considering he only played two years of college ball my take is there is a good chance he can continue to improve. "And over the next couple of years you're going to see a guy who's going to be deadly accurate. I think he's going to be a superstar." I'm buying into the above statement by Carson Palmer's brother. and http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2018/03/jordan_palmer_on_browns_candid.html I only hope the Browns, Jets don't draft him as they will likely ruin him.

I agree with this! What Bill Connelly at SB Nation and the OP don't realize is that Allen only played two full years of College ball and we are dealing with young men who are growing, developing into full grown adults. Allen started college as a scrawny 198 lb kid and grew into his 237lb frame. Plus, he has already started working with coaches on his footwork and mechanics. This showed in the senior bowl, combine and pro day as his accuracy, touch on the ball has improved. There is no exact science to determine if a player will become the next Ryan Leaf or the next Aaron Rodgers...regardless of stats. Each college QB will develop differently depending on the team they go to and how that team develops them. I can tell you right now that Josh Allen carried his team to an 8-5 record and won a bowl game as he was about the only player who returned for the 2017 season at Wyoming. The article in comparing Josh Allen to Tim Tebow is downright moronic as Tebow always had serious issues with his mechanics and it never did get better. Allen played in a deep passing pro-style offense at Wyoming which is more difficult for a QB than say a WCO scheme in which Josh Rosen played in. Allen doesn't have injury issues like Rosen or a loopy delivery like Darnold. The only other QB I like for Buffalo in this years draft class is Baker Mayfield. Want to compare him to an NFL player? Try Cam Newton, Matthew Stafford, Aaron Rodgers. "When he’s on his game, Allen will deliver the ball into minuscule throwing windows, 50+ yards downfield. Allen has a good foundation for his mechanics, having played in a system that taught him how to take 3- 5- and 7-step drops from under center. He has a compact overhand throwing motion. Allen’s offense used plenty of bootlegs and moving pockets, so he’s comfortable rolling out to pass (arguably, his strongest suit is when he rolls out to the right and throws downfield). On a micro level, Allen has the tools to fit a camel through the eye of a needle. When his feet are lined up, and he’s not pressured, Allen will deliver incredible throws to the perfect point." From another article SB Nation, https://www.buffalorumblings.com/2018/4/5/17201220/josh-allen-scouting-report-2018-nfl-draft-film-analysis-quarterback How Josh Allen develops as an NFL QB will be determined by which team drafts him and if that team allows him to properly develop.

Rosen's tape is miles better. But then so was the team he played on with better players, better coaching. His star receiver Lasley had over 1264 yards receiving with 9 TDs. Rosen also played in a pro-style WCO offense with shorter passes...and yet UCLA finished the 2017 season at 5-6. I can't help but think that Rosen is another Sam Bradford who looks and plays brilliantly and yet only managed to play in half of his career games because of injuries. While he can move around in the pocket and set his feet very quickly. He also isn't very good at escaping a pass rush and when he does get hit he tends to get injured.
-
What you have when you over scrutinize a college players tape when said player only has played two years of football all you get is "part" of the analysis. The kid started college as this scrawny 198 lb weakling who grew into his bigger frame. The same can be said about developing as you go and more times than not players improve their play the more they play. You can watch two years of tape forever and it won't tell you the entire story. Josh Allen's first year of college he played with a somewhat veteran team and in his second year, everyone that had touched the ball in his first year was gone. Allen had to deal with an entire rookie class that was learning as they went. Hence the reason he was running for his life nearly every offensive play and when he did throw his receivers had difficulty getting separation and catching the ball. Most QB's when under this kind of duress usually don't win many games and yet this young man managed to carry his team when needed. In the senior bowl, Allen faced some top competition and he did well going 9 of 13 for 158 yards, 2 TDs with a 12.8 avg. He also showed accuracy and touch with his throws in the game. From what has happened since the senior bowl, combine, and pro day is a significant improvement in his footwork, accuracy, and touch. There is a REAL reason as to why so many scouts, draft analysts have this kid as a top-five pick and some the first overall pick. P.S. Where are you getting this poor mental processing stuff? Allen can read the full field and is capable of getting through his progressions at a reasonable pace. He doesn’t anticipate players coming open, but will deliver the ball when he sees a player moving into space. This kid needs some time to on the bench to develop no question and like I said if developed properly he could be another Big Ben, Aaron Rodgers.
-
Man, I can only hope Allen doesn't go to the Jets. Even though there is a strong chance that they will ruin him by throwing him into the fire too soon. There is also the chance that he can overcome that team's coaching ineptitude and develop into a QB the Bills will dread playing twice a year. So many Bills fans have this kid all wrong as they hear accuracy issues and say no way. This young man is a winner as he basically carried that Wyoming team by himself and won a bowl game. That team was absolute crap without him. Listen to what opposing coaches complained about when facing him in that they needed to defend the entire field from his arm. "Still, there were moments when Allen's gifts were on display. "Third down, rips an absolute freakin' dime on a rope 45 yards, hits the guy on the facemask. Incomplete," "He's getting pressured, not every time, but just about I'd say 70 percent of his dropbacks, he's either getting pressure early — before 2 1/2 seconds — or his receivers aren't separating so he's forced to hold the ball and move and avoid pressure and then try to reset and throw. Or throw on the run while a defender is closing in on him," McShay said. "What are you supposed to do?" Talking with Josh Allen he knows his footwork was a mess in college and he has been working with coaches to improve his mechanics, footwork and that showed at his pro day. This a kid that dedicated himself to be a great NFL QB and if developed properly could be another Aaron Rodgers, Big Ben. http://www.startribune.com/evaluating-allen-adversity-will-be-best-test-for-wyoming-qb/446694593/

Every Bills fan feels the same way about JP Losman now. Although it wasn't his fault he was drafted by a team with no patience in allowing him to develop properly. Drafted in 2004 by Mike Mularkey as HC, Tom Clements as OC. Losman sat his first year after breaking his leg after being run into during training camp by Troy Vincent. The team brought in Kelly Holcomb after they dumped Bledsoe and he was the backup QB with Losman starting. Needless to say that Losman's offensive line wasn't any better at protecting him then it was Bledsoe and so the musical chairs of benching QB's started. Losman actually played pretty decently in 2006 despite the crappy O line and the team went 7-9 under new HC Dick Jauron with Steve Fairchild as OC. That year Losman was the 11th best passer in the NFL with an 84.9 rating. Bad lines, bad coaching and always looking over your shoulder to see if you will be benched. Two head coaches, four different OC's. Clements, Fairchild, Schonert, Alex Van Pelt and none really worth a damn. Clements wasn't bad later on but he got his first job as an OC in Buffalo. I feel bad for both JP and Edwards as they really had no chance to do well in Buffalo.

The Patriots are probably attempting to make the Bills panic and give up two farms for the Giants #2 pick for fear of losing Rosen. When in fact they are probably looking at tight ends who can replace Gronk as he is the one that makes that team so difficult to beat! The other position after letting Kony Ealy leave is an edge rusher. The Patriots did work out Chubb.
-
This is what first came into my mind too. Both the Steelers and Patriots have been frothing all over this kid. As others have noted I kinda doubt they have the ammo to move into the top 5 considering they are always choosing near last. Then again they could be going for another WR like Calvin Ridley, DJ Moore.

Jerry Sullivan: Ralph Wilson Was A Cheapskate
Nihilarian replied to BuffaloRush's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Believe it or not, there were other NFL owners that were/are far worse than Wilson. Think Wilson was cheap? Cardinals owner Bill Bidwell used to sit in on each and every player's contract negotiations. He was also the team's de facto general manager. From 1960 thru 1987 the Cards only won the division 2x and made the playoffs 3x while losing in the first round each time. I feel bad for each player on those teams as they dwelt in such mediocrity for so many years. Bidwell moved the team from St Louis to Phoenix, Arizona because of his ineptitude in building a winning team and fans stopped attending. Thank the lord for Cards fans that Bidwell left sons to inherit his team and they changed everything around. They did finally make it to an SB in 2008. Another bad owner in my view was Colts owner Robert Irsay. In 1972 Rams owner Carroll Rosenbloom traded the Colts to Robert Irsay. After the 72 season, the Colts traded star QB Johnny Unitas to the Chargers. The star QB after Unitas was QB Bert Jones and as the story goes Colts owner Robert Irsay gave Jones a new house in Baltimore as part of his signing deal and when the Colts released Jones they took back the house as it seems that Jones didn't read the fine print in his contract. Irsay did this same thing to other players like giving a car as a signing bonus to an RB and then repossessing it after the player was released. The real part comes in when a young Stanford QB John Elway heard that his favorite NFL QB was kicked out of his own house by Robert Irsay... this made Elway furious. Some reports say that it was Colts head coach Frank Kush was the actual reason as to why Elway refused to sign with the Colts. It was the former and the Colts lost out on a HoF QB because the owner was such a dick. From 1978 to 1983 the Colts were one of the worst teams in NFL history and in one game against Buffalo the Colts offense did not cross the 50-yard line all game. The team was so bad they couldn't sell season tickets so the owner was forced to move the team. Let's also not forget that after the 1983 season the packing trucks moved the team out of Baltimore in the middle of the night in a move to Indianapolis. Art Modell is probably the most hated NFL owner ever after moving the beloved Cleveland Browns to Baltimore to become the Baltimore Ravens. Because his team was losing money Modell was forced to move the team or sell it and later on he was forced to sell it anyway. ask any Browns fan what they think of Modell. 1996 to 1998 Cleveland didn't have an NFL team. In my opening sentence, I said "are" because the Cowboys owner is also the teams GM and if not for his sons being involved in the team and talking him out of drafting Johnny Manziel among other stupid moves. Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson had a falling out after the super bowl years and Jones thinks he was the one that built those super bowl teams and hence the reason the owner is the GM. The Boys have been in the playoffs 9x times since their last super bowl win in 1995 and yet haven't won one of those playoff games. The owner thinks he is the smartest GM in the league. Dallas might not ever return to a super bowl until the owner steps away and hires a real NFL GM. JMO -
Jerry Sullivan: Ralph Wilson Was A Cheapskate
Nihilarian replied to BuffaloRush's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Ralph Wilson was notoriously cantankerous and frugal throughout his entire ownership of the Buffalo Bills. Make no mistake Wilson would have moved the team if he were put in such a position that he might be forced to sell all or part of the team. He would have moved it. In the late 1970's the team wasn't winning and fans weren't attending. The team was forced to have preseason games in other cities because Bills fans wouldn't attend those home preseason games in Buffalo. Ralph Wilson was getting desperate because he knew if he didn't sell more seats he would be forced to sell all or part of the team...or move it. Instead, he hired Chuck Knox and made him one of the highest paid head coaches in the league. Which was something he would have otherwise not done! Wilson didn't do this because he wanted a winner, he did it because he was forced to do it. Knox was so good that he was able to build a winning team despite the moron in Bills GM Stew Barber. Knox did his own drafting and brought in Norm Pollom his player personnel director he had with the Rams. ( BTW, it was Pollom who recommended the Bills hire Bill Polian) This same situation developed a few years later after Knox left for Seattle because Wilson refused to give him a raise. Which he should have done considering the transformation the man had on the city of Buffalo and the team. In 1984-85 After back to back 2-14 seasons and a stadium almost empty and the fans that did attend wore bags on their heads. Bill Polian needed to talk Wilson into making QB Jim Kelly the highest paid QB in the league and also talked him into stadium improvements. What Bills fans don't know is that while paying the very least amount of dollars he could on coaches and GM's. Wilson collected fine art worth millions and had other expensive hobbies like racing horses. The man might have been wealthy but he still kept himself as team president and basically micromanaged every head coach by phone from Detroit. Kinda why most good NFL head coaches wouldn't think of taking the head coaching job in Buffalo. But yeah, in his later years he would have not even thought of moving the team and as long as the team made a healthy profit as there was no reason. Makes one think as to why the marketing guy was the GM for a time. -
If we were to trade up, when would it happen?
Nihilarian replied to bills6969's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The Bills might love only one QB in Darnold or Allen and if Cleveland takes him with the #1 they wasted all those picks moving up. Like Denver stated it makes more sense to see how the draft unfolds before giving up so many picks in a very talented draft. -
I agree it was Rex who wanted to bring in Tyrod Taylor and not the GM. Tyrod did get us into the playoffs albeit with a big helping hand from lady luck. Rex also vouched for LG Richie Incognito when no other team wanted him and the guy has been an all-pro every year. His presence helps both the LT and OC along that line. OTOH, Rex did F up that top 5 defense. On that note, I think I trust his opinion more on offensive players then on the defensive side.

Let the record I'm against trade into top 6 due to price
Nihilarian replied to Pete's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
What a lot of Bills fans that are in this trade up frenzy don't get is there are some later round QB's that teams like the Patriots, Steelers are interested in to develop. The odds are that a 1st round QB making it in the NFL is at 38% so that means out of five guys only two probably make it...which two? Darnold, Rosen? Mayfield, Allen? I'll be honest here are as I recall so much hype over RG3 and others. Now, look at them. I left off some later round picks. 2010, #1 Sam Bradford, #25 Tim Tebow, #78 Jimmy Clausen, #85 Colt McCoy 2011, #1 Cam Newton, #8 Jake Locker, #12 Christian Ponder, #35 Andy Dalton, #36 Colin Kaepernick, #74 Ryan Mallett 2012, #1 Andrew Luck, #2 RG3, #8, Ryan Tannehill, #22 Brandon Weedon, #57 Brock Osweiler, #75, Russell Wilson, #88 Nick Foles, #102 Kirk Cousins 2013, #16 EJ Manuel, #39 Geno Smith, #73 Mike Glennon, #98 Matt Barkley, #110 Ryan Nassib 2014, #3 Blake Bortles, #22 Johnny Manziel, #32 Teddy Bridgewater, #36 Derek Carr, #62 Jimmy Garroppolo, #135 Tom Savage, #163 Aaron Murry, #164 AJ McCarron 2015, #1 Jamis Winston, #2 Marcus Mariota, #75 Garrett Grayson, #103 Bryce Petty, #147 Brett Hundley 2016, #1 Jerod Goff, #2 Carson Wentz, #26 Paxton Lynch, #51 Christian Hackenberg, #91 Jacoby Brissett, #93 Cody Kessler, #100 Connor Cook, # 135 Dak Prescott, #139 Cardale Jones. #162 Kevin Hogan. 2017, #2 Mitch Turbisky, #10 Patrick Mahomes, #12 Deshaun Watson, #52 Deshone Kizer, #87 Davis Webb, #104 CJ Beathard. 14 or so out of 50+ somethings. Bradford might have been a franchise QB at some point in his career. 10 seasons, 160 games and he is only played in 80 with a career record of 34-45-1 and he has made over 110 Million in doing so. Anyway, the point here is to look at 2012-2014 and if you have scouts that know what they are doing you can find quality QBs later than just the top five picks. -
Probably because he is a full grade below Darnold and just about equal to Allen, Mayfield who both are said to have a higher upside. Rosen does have his share of issues, personality, playboy type with a hot tub in his dorm room. Recall the last Playboy type in Matt Leinart? Durability issues and can't escape the pocket well. When he does move out of the pocket his accuracy drops like crazy. What really stands out is that he thinks he is smarter than his coaches and with UCLA he probably was...

Bills have private workout with Baker Mayfield
Nihilarian replied to FluffHead's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
sweet! -
This was hilarious. I doubt the Bills will even give this kid a second look as they want to move away from these dual-threat QB's. The Panthers just fired their OC in an effort to help Cam Newton become more of a pocket passer. RG3 couldn't throw from the pocket because he developed the yips. Colin Kaepernick can kneel all he wants and if he were worth a damn as a pocket passer every team in the NFL would want him. Bills fans have short memories as Michael Vick was working on becoming a better pocket passer towards the end of his career because that's whats needed in the NFL! I think this FO would rather draft Luke Faulk, Mike White or anyone that isn't a dual-threat QB.

Mel Kiper's Nightmare Mock 3.0
Nihilarian replied to BillsFanForever19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think ALL the QB needy teams are looking at Sam Darnold who is a full grade above every other QB in this year's draft. And if he goes first in the first pick then everything changes with the Giants, Jets. I think the Giants are sitting there looking at Darnold too and should the Browns take him they will go Chubb to replace JPP. I'm not so sure that the Jets want a QB other than Darnold and if he isn't available then perhaps they go, RB Saquon Barkley. #1) Darnold #2) Chubb #3) Barkley #4) Fitzpatrick #5) Allen, Rosen or Mayfield to Denver. Buffalo could move up to take whoever is left @ #6 thru #10 to get ahead of Miami. JMO -
#1) I think the draft will unfold with Darnold as the #1 player off the board to Cleveland. #20 NY Giants since trading JPP wants a pass rusher in Chubb. #3) The NY Jets get so excited they fall six times running to the podium to select RB Sequon Barkley. #4) Cleveland is pissed they missed Barkley so they go CB in Minkah Fitzpatrick #5) The Broncos have their choice of Rosen, Mayfield, Allen and they go Rosen. #6) Indy wanted Chubb and since he didn't fall to them they trade out to Buffalo who selects either Mayfield or Allen. Or they stay put and draft OG Quinton Nelson to protect Luck. Same, the kid is a winner and that same attitude we have seen before.
-
C'mon Kirby. If the guy was another Tom Brady most every Bills fan would worship him. I think a reason as to why a lot of Bill fans didn't like him was because he was a somewhat limited NFL QB...nothing more. Yes, there will always be those few like our current nation's leader. Hopefully, they all get a bit older and die off.
-
Everyone talks about having a franchise LT and yet the opposing defense can move their best rushers over the weakest link, which was Mills. Things might have gone differently had Glenn not been hurt most of the season. BTW, benching Tyrod might have been the best thing for him as he worked extra hard to keep that starting job after that.
