What I Don't Understand About Fan Reaction to Allen
Nihilarian replied to Bill from NYC's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Do you not understand that rookie QBs not only need help from a QB coach all during the 16 game season, they also get a great deal of help from a veteran QB on the roster and their OC? The QB position is probably the most cerebral positions in all of the professional sports. Learning the playbook, all the plays, the nomenclature with the play calling, film study and breakdown of a game tape. Learning how to read a defense, set offensive line protections. Not only did EJ not have a QB coach his rookie season nor a veteran QB to learn from. The only offensive mind in the teams offensive coaching staff was Hackett who was never an NFL OC previously. Can you seriously not comprehend how this would impair a rookie QB's proper development? I have NEVER, EVER heard of an NFL team attempting to develop a rookie QB with no real qualified people on the coaching staff to develop him. In real life as a normal person, it would be like taking a job as a tool and die, maker, apprentice only to find that there is nobody around you qualified to properly train you. It's a 100% setup for failure. -
Why didn't NE make a move for a QB in Rd.1???
Nihilarian replied to #34fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think they would have traded up had one of those top three QBs been available. You have to realize that Buffalo was working the phones hard with every team after the Jets took Darnold and the only team to offer a trade demanded quite a bit to allow a move. Buffalo offered more than the Cards or other teams so the deal was done. It strikes me that because Arizona paid so little to move up that no other team wanted to move up to draft Rosen. -

On another note, I think the Buffalo Bills need to thank whoever released Josh Allen's tweets from high school as that surely caused him to drop in the draft. I would literally hate life had the Jets drafted Allen and the Bills would then need to face that kid 2x a year for over the next decade or more. If not for those Tweets Allen probably goes #1 overall or to the Jets. The Bills FO moved so quickly on Allen as soon as another team would allow them to move up to draft him. I have to wonder if some team investigating his background found those and released them. -

Not true? Downing was EJ's coach in his second season and the damage had already been done. Downing's only year in Buffalo was in 2014 and EJ was drafted in 2013 season. The Bills went into that 2013 season with three QBs on the roster, EJ, Thad Lewis and Jeff Tuel. No QB coach or offensive mind other than Nathanial Hackett...who most Bills fans deemed an Idiot. Besides, EJ himself stated that he learned more from watching Kyle Orton prepare for a game than anything any coach had done for him. That statement leads me to believe that Downing was pretty much useless. EJ failed because his coaches failed him and screwed him in his rookie season. -

EJ failed in Buffalo mostly because of the clowns who were coaching him decided not to hire a QB coach or even have a veteran QB on the roster. The only guy EJ had to learn from was Nathanial Hackett who had never been an NFL offensive coordinator previously. Want a sure fire way to ruin any QB prospect? Don't hire a QB coach. Don't have a veteran NFL QB on the roster and instead have three rookies all trying to figure stuff out on their own. Then have the guy teaching them with no NFL experience in his job teaching this three rookie QBs the NFL ropes. What an unholy clusterfluck of stupidity by Bills head coach Saint Doug Marrone. EJ never had a fair chance to develop under Marrone. -

For the love of god stop making idiotic comments about this young man. Nobody can properly evaluate an NFL career from watching only two seasons of college tape. The kid improved from the end of the college season to the Senior Bowl where the level of competition was equal to his level. To the combine and his pro day as he had the scouts in awe with his passing. Watch him yourself and listen to what the top scouts are saying. There were real reasons why this FO passed on Rosen over Allen. -

This! Not sure if they have that many picks unless they trade for some. But I would love to see an offensive center, RT, LG and WR in the second and third. -

and that same guy who wrote that article also loved Johhny football and Geno Smith. You can't watch tape of a kid playing in his first two years of college ball and think this will what he will do with the rest of his life. Josh Allen was like 10th grader playing with a bunch of 8th graders around him as he had to carry the team most of the time. This was a scrawny 198lb kid who grew into that big frame in his time at Wyoming. He played in the snow, the cold, the wind at Wyoming and is a blue collar type guy not afraid of hard work. A perfect fit for Buffalo I think. Give the guy a chance before you and others condemn him. -

Good read. http://www.newyorkupstate.com/buffalo-bills/index.ssf/2018/04/2018_nfl_draft_why_josh_allen_thinks_hes_a_perfect_fit_for_the_buffalo_bills.html "I think out of all four or five quarterbacks in this draft, I'm the one that was suited for Buffalo," Allen said. "The type of atmosphere that you have to play in, the weather. The type of toughness it takes to play in a cold weather place. I was that guy. I'm fortunate enough that they came up to get me and I'm going to be forever grateful to be a Buffalo Bill. Hopefully I call this place home for the next 15-20 years." Favre 40 to 54% in college and he improved once in the NFL as did Matthew Stafford, Tyrod Taylor, and others. and among those others, Joe Montana was a 52.4 to 54.2 percent passer. -

It really is ridiculous that so many fans are so upset that the team didn't trade up for their guy or pick their guy... When the reality finally sinks in I think most Bills fans will embrace the pick and think that instead of giving up the farm they got their future franchise QB AND a stud linebacker in the first round this year. I know I couldn't be happier or more proud of what this regime has done so far. -

Josh Allen's head coach at Wyoming was just on the NFL network talking about both Carson Wentz and Josh Allen. as Craig Bohl coached both. He said Allen is going to push the edge and do those things that he didn't know how many times he was thinking 'oh my" Allen is going to get sacked..and the next thing he sees is a touchdown. He said one time during a scrimmage they called a play with a dump off to the fullback in the flat and the next thing he knows is Allen threw a backside post 65-yard pass on a rope for a TD. Afterward, the coach said what are ya doing? He said Josh, throw the ball to the fullback and Josh said no! Favre says TDs first! Allen was joking around and Craig Bohl said I love him, love him, love him to death. -

He also worked with Sam Darnold along with Allen. Not only that he also helped Deshaun Watson last offseason, how did that work out? http://www.houstontexans.com/news/article-2/QB-guru-Deshaun-Watson-is-dynamic-leader-/f3b72e98-249f-43c9-8c7b-4913226c3fff -

I really don't get all the lamentation over this draft so far. Buffalo Bills fans should be doing backflips and worshiping Beane for his titanium balls in being patient not overpaying for Josh Rosen at the #2 spot. The Bills not only got their future franchise QB in the first round they also got a stud ILBer with the 16th pick in the first -
No. Kim was on the NFL network and stated that while they both watch film they don't really know what they are looking at so they leave the player decisions to the people who do know.

Love the pick! Beane is a genius and got his QB and ILBer in the first round... when almost every Bills fan posting here wanted him to give up two 1sts, two 2nds, two 3rds for just a QB named Josh Rosen with the second overall pick. Some fans even wanted him to give up three firsts for Rosen! -

There is also a huge difference between Boller and Allen. Boller played four years at Cal and his Comp percentage was 38.6, second year, 46.7, third-year 49.3 and his senior year 53.4. Allen was only a two year player at Wyoming and his first year his completion percentage was 56.0 and his senior year was 56.3 which really isn't that far from 60%. Billick was also an arrogant jackass in thinking he could fix Boller. -

That writer also loved Geno Smith and Johnny Manziel says enough to me that this guy doesn't know what he is talking about. You didn't even read the article I linked! Read the entire article and then get back to me. Of course, the big question with Allen is his accuracy and his 56.2 completion percentage, which scares the heck out of offensive coaches. But guess what? "We've fixed it,'' said Palmer. He said with Allen's poor completion percentage "there are two ways to look at it: one, what he's doing mechanically, and then two what's happening around him, receivers and the concepts and the coverages that they're seeing and there's a lot of complexities that go into both of those. "From a mechanics standpoint you have to be athletic enough take an old muscle memory and create a new muscle memory. Take something that was an old habit and replace it with the new habit. With Josh, it was tied to his base and kind of where his feet are placed and how short his front stride is. And so making a small adjustment has made a huge impact.'' -

Yes, and Palmer also worked with Deshaun Watson the last offseason. How did that work out? The writer of that article Rodger Sherman also states I’m often wrong. (I was huge into Johnny Manziel and [speaks in a small voice so people can’t hear] Geno Smith.) -

Like I said in an earlier post in this thread. "Think of it as almost every Bills fan in this forum wanted the Bills to trade up to the #2 spot for (Mr. Glass), Josh Rosen by giving up two #1s, two #2s, two #3s and some even wanted the Bills to give up three first rounders for him. The Bills got two blue-chip players in the first round in 2018 and has someone else so aptly put it...they should be crapping glitter!" -

In 2016 with a better team around him he averaged 228.7 yards a game and he could have entered the draft at the end of that year. Instead, he stayed at the school he knew he was going to have great troubles with. In 2017 every player that had touched the ball at Wyoming in 2016 was no longer with the team. This kid was forced to play with a complete noob team in running for his life every other play and his receiver corps had to learn as they went. His O line was bad as were his RBs, wideouts. Not much of a run game so this kid was forced to do it mostly by himself. Those receivers got very little separation and didn't run routes very well besides dropping a lot of passes. Allen would zip a fastball into a receivers hands in the end zone only to see them drop it. If that wasn't bad enough Allen played in a pro-style deep passing scheme that wasn't QB friendly like it was for Baker Mayfield* and Rosen with 4x as many screens and outs that made their stats look so much better. Josh Allen only played two years in college had has room to further develop as so many college QB's improve their completion percentage over a four-year career. Allen is a winner who had back to back 8 win seasons and won his last bowl game with a team of scrubs around him. https://clutchpoints.com/nfl-draft-news-josh-allen-thinks-inaccuracy-talk-blown-proportion/ On another note. Whoever released those old tweets from Allen when he was 15 years old did the Buffalo Bills a huge favor as the kid dropped far enough so the Bills could move up to get him! Think of it as almost every Bills fan in this forum wanted the Bills to trade up to the #2 spot for (Mr. Glass), Josh Rosen by giving up two #1s, two #2s, two #3s and some even wanted the Bills to give up three first rounders for him. The Bills got two blue-chip players in the first round in 2018 and has someone else so aptly put it...they should be crapping glitter! -
I did some research on the accuracy issue with Allen and it was mostly because he wasn't setting his feet properly. He knows his footwork was a mess last season and he has been diligently working on that since the end of college. He has improved since then and it showed in the senior bowl, the combine and at his pro day. Another thing Bills fans need to understand is he only played TWO seasons at Wyoming so there is room/time for him to further develop his accuracy. I think what Aikman was referring to is players like Kyle Boller who never really improved that much in the NFL. There is also a huge difference between Boller and Allen. Boller played four years at Cal and his Comp percentage was 38.6, second year, 46.7, third-year 49.3 and his senior year 53.4. Allen was only a two year player at Wyoming and his first year his completion percentage was 56.0 and his senior year was 56.3 which really isn't that far from 60%, Anyway, there were real reasons as to why his Comp % didn't go up and one is that every football player at Wyoming that touched the ball in 2016 besides Allen was gone for the 2017 season. So, the kid was forced to deal with a team filled with noobs, on the O line, the receiver corps and they did drop a lot of balls. Not to mention they were all learning how to run routes. So, when he wasn't running for his life he was making plays with his arm. Another thing is that Josh Allen played in a pro-style offense that wasn't QB friendly as he was throwing deep outs vs the screens and short passes that Rosen and Mayfield threw to make their stats look so much better.

On another note, Guys, give the kid a chance to develop before you go on an anti QB crusade like some have in the past. Can we wait to see if he succeeds or fails before we start bitching?
-
Amen, brother! and if they screw that part up in surrounding the kid with the proper talent they wasted the player and the pick.

Guys, please don't compare this year QB pick to EJ as that poor guy never stood a chance to develop in Buffalo. Morrone was a sublime idiot as a first-time head coach in not hiring a veteran QB coach and the team went into that season with not only not having a QB coach they also had no veteran QB on the roster with three rookie QBs. On top of that, the team's offensive coordinator (Nathanial Hackett) had never been an NFL OC previously and his extent of NFL offenses was he was a quality control guy for a bit. Think about that for a minute. Exactly how was a rookie QB supposed to develop into an NFL starting QB with absolutely nobody to teach him. That was beyond ridiculously moronic. EJ stated he learned far more about being an NFL QB from watching Kyle Orton prepare for games. Orton was there in EJ's second year in Buffalo. That statement speaks volumes about the lack of teaching the team did with him. Marrone wanted an already NFL knowledgable QB and clearly wanted no part in developing EJ in any way, shape or form. Not to mention that the offensive line was a complete mess! Yes, they had Glenn and Woods but the rest were bums in Doug Legursky, Urbik, and Pears. In EJ's second year, Pears was moved to RG and Henderson RT I hope to god that Beane and McD do things very differently with their rookie QB.
