He needs to stay healthy (something he hasn't been able to do) and help the team win playoff games. If he goes down and the 49ers dealt 4 draft picks for a handful of regular season wins, then the trade is a disaster.

He can but his contract would have to include escalators for playoff milestones which is rare. Otherwise he would get the standard pay for being on the 53-man roster for division games ($42K), conference games ($65K), etc. It's fair to say that he is looking for a big multi-year deal and wouldn't sign anything short-term.

As far as mid-December additions go this is pretty good. Probably won't be a huge factor but there's almost no cost/risk and if he somehow performs at even 75% of what he once was for the playoffs it's a steal.
