Tomlin will survive this year. Next year will be critical for him.
-
I think the only team you listed that the Ravens probably can't beat is the 49ers. The others they can win, as well as the Bills game. We should be able to beat both the Browns and Steelers, neither team is very good.

11 picks in the first three rounds in 2020-21 drafts...insane. Talk about loaded. Chris Grier looks to be at least a decent GM; he found Tunsil and Minkah Fitzpatrick. He needs a QB, so we'll see how that goes.

The Bills should win this game easily. If it is a struggle, McDermott and his staff need to look in the mirror to determine fault.

The D isn't built to handle what hit them today

I don't see them moving Edmunds to an outside linebacker spot; it goes against how McDermott built this defense. I think they'll keep Edmunds at MLB and be patient with him. That leaves the DT spot; currently Kyle Peko is simply not good enough and needs to be replaced. Who is available, I'm not sure. Unfortunately, they'll also keep Star for at least the rest of this season and probably next, as well. Jordan Phillips is playing well and hope they can get him signed to a longer contract. Ed Oliver, not surprisingly, is struggling like a rookie will; I don't think he's big enough at this point. Oliver probably needs to put 20+ lbs on his frame, which (coupled with experience) should make a difference next year. I don't see them adding a DT right now, especially if none are available that helps this year and in the future. Harrison Phillips, while i thought was ok, Of course DE is another problem, but not sure who is available at a reasonable price. Kerrigan would be nice, but the Redskins won't give him away...probably looking for a 1st round pick. I agree that your short term solution of moving Edmunds outside and getting a bigger, traditional thumper MLB would be the quickest way to fix the problem. Unfortunately that won't happen. That leaves McD and Frazier having to adjust their scheme. They have to make some changes because they've been figured out. -
My biggest frustration with the offense
Happy replied to Steptide's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Sounds like the biggest frustration is with Brian Daboll and his play design, which I agree. It would be nice to see Beasley used as a true slot WR, with quick passes and YAC. Daboll is intent on trying to outsmart everyone, though the only person he's outsmarting is himself. -
You bring up screens/short passes and Carson Wentz. So that doesn't apply to Josh Allen as well? I think that has something to do with it, like you mentioned in this thread.
-
But look at pretty much every game before that when Josh attempted > 20 yard passes; they ended up 5+ beyond the intended receiver, without fail. I saw (last week, I believe) an article where Daboll or McD said something to the effect of we're working on Josh's accuracy, it's not where it needs to be. So it would seem the coaches know accuracy is an issue on the longer throws. I think Josh will get there, at least right now there are bigger problems than Josh.

McD can get a lot out of what talent he has. In 2017, like this year, the Bills have good to very good talent with maybe one or two as elite. McD also does not beat good teams and tends to get out-coached. Also, in 2017 if the miracle of Dalton to Boyd doesn't happen, there is no playoffs. I'm glad we finally got the monkey off our backs, but it was very fortunate. Yes, Josh Allen is a second year QB still growing into the position and experiencing a lot of pains in doing so.
-
In 1988 this might be the case; not now. McD's and Dabol's schemes have some problems, both personnel and tactical.
-
That is their fault. Shouldn't have hired Rex. I agree that McD will be here through his contract, at least.
-
Which is too bad that some have blinders on; after the past two weeks, McD and his staff need to be questioned. You can't beat (and in some cases barely) bad to mediocre teams and loose to good to decent teams (albeit Philly is struggling) and not be questioned. Yes, that would be a blowout

Quality Wins - A Troubling Observation

San Fran is in arguably the toughest division in pro football. NE has beat every team for years, so they have nothing to prove. -
Bills 13, Eagles 31 postgame thread
Happy replied to 78thealltimegreat's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Cold bucket of water dumped over the head, also frightening. Josh is still trying to grow into his shoes, so is Mayfield and Darnold for that matter. But I expect more from Daboll who seems to be more about his scheme than the players who execute it, as well as the field and game conditions. McD seems like he is not capable of choosing a coaching staff; these are his hand picked coordinators and they're failing in all phases. -
Your reply says nothing
-
I think McD does survive. If they lost out, which I doubt, then there will be discussions; I expect to see him back next year. McD does need to get a handle on his coaching staff because all three phases look out of control the past two weeks.

Ummm...Brady wasn't smart enough to run this offense in 2003. Your defense and spying carried you through.

The D isn't built to handle what hit them today
Happy replied to Big Blitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
So true. Our supposedly top 5 defense not only can't stop the run, they're not getting to the QB or disrupting plays in the backfield...all due to not being able to penetrate the O-line. Unfortunately, I do not see them getting a DE or DT before the trade deadline. This means that a scheme change is necessary; there is no way McD and Frazier can keep doing things the way they've been and expect success. Brian Flores and his tanking Miami Dolphins team exposed them. If Adrian Peterson puts up 200 yards and we cannot harass Haskins or Keenum, our defensive masterminds didn't do their jobs. -

I doubt Edmunds moves outside; his primary responsibility is to cover short passes over the middle, while assisting in run stopping. The DT's are primarily responsible for run stopping. Unfortunately, our DT's are getting pushed all over the place. Oliver needs to put on a lot of weight since he's undersized now, Star needs to go, Peko shouldn't be playing in the NFL, and we're missing Harrison Phillips. Besides that, a DE is needed. Murphy needs to go, Hughes has some gas in the tank, and Shaq Lawson will hopefully get re-signed. -
We're certainly more than one player away from being elite. That probably explains why Beane has not made any trades, and will most likely finish the season with the personnel they have.

A Few Thoughts about the Eagles Game, in no particular order
Happy replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Let's not forget that Philly has a front seven that beat the snot out of us. A mean front seven on defense covers a lot of shortcomings in the rest of the team. -
A lesson learned? It is not all about Defense
Happy replied to Billsfan1972's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
True, Daboll is McD's hand picked OC, Leslie Frazier is McD's hand picked DC, and Heath Farwell is his hand picked SpT coordinator; their performance reflects on McD...good or bad. Right now, the later is prevalent. I'm convinced Farwell is Danny Crossman in disguise. Daboll has been disappointing and Frazier can't adjust when his scheme has been figured out and not working. -

This is a valid point, and I completely agree. Doug Pederson is a good coach, who out schemed McD...in all three phases. Brian Flores even out schemed McD last week (he saw the weakness in the middle of our DL) and gashed us in the run game; Miami just didn't have the personnel to pull the game out. -
How do we fix the run defense?
Happy replied to Brianmoorman4jesus's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Star needs to go. Get a 1 tech DT (or two) that has size. Oliver will also need to put on weight and muscle; also more time playing is more experience, which is what he's missing right now. Penetration and pushing the o-line back to collapse the pocket will be key. If this can happen, the linebackers will be better able to make the tackle, assuming they keep Edmunds as MLB (which they probably will). -
Is Tremaine Edmunds the answer at MLB?
Happy replied to KOKO NFL's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think the OP's main issue/concern is with McD's defensive scheme. The DTs can't be handled like they did, otherwise you get what was seen today, which was the MLB being largely ineffective. Part of that is Edmunds still not completely capable as a run stopper and another part of that is Edmunds not certain of the defensive scheme. The DT's play a larger part in run stopping than the MLB in this defense.
