Not crazy about it, but he *could* become like Cam Newton -
The Final Straw: We can't draft Josh Allen
OldTimer1960 replied to K D's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I agree very much with this post. while his Tweets were certainly racist, they smack more of a high school kid trying (in a misguided way) to be cool than of someone who is a true racist. Now, of course there should be some quick background checks with teachers coaches and friends to see if they observed any more abysmal behavior. -
I might believe that part about getting from 12 to 5 for the 56th and 96th pick. Given that it cost the Jets 3 2nd round picks (both this year are better picks than the Bills 2 2nd rounders) to get from 6 to 3, I don't see how it would only cost a late 2nd to go from 5 to 3. If this came to pass, I'd be thrilled, but it seems to me that they'd need to give up more than that to get from 12 to 2.

I absolutely agree that you almost cannot judge Allen from college tape as his team was so severely out-talented by most competition. The most meaningless points I've heard are about his performance against Power 5 conference teams. Well, of course he is under great pressure and none of his receivers can get open against the superior athletes. He couldn't look good in those situations at all. Still, he does have accuracy problems. Question is, can they be fixed if he has better protection and some decent receivers? I kind of think he could end up on about the same level as Cam Newton - or he could be another Derek Anderson.

I agree that Allen clearly has more physical talent than Rudolph. I also agree that Rudolph is a bit of a lumbering athlete. It is hard for me to see on the videos that I have access to that Rudolph's arm is as weak as some say. I am surely no scout and there are definitely several reports that scouts view Rudolph's arm as substandard, so you may very well be right.

Am I the only one? I'll take any of the top 6 QBs
OldTimer1960 replied to Rubes's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I just don't see Rudolph as that bad when I watch him. You may be right, as I am not a professional scout. However, I see a guy who looks like he could be a good starting NFL QB, without top arm strength. Now, at least in my view, a lot of very good NFL QBs don't have rocket launchers. I see Rudolph as having "adequate" arm strength not "weak". I guess we'll find out over the next 2-3 years. -
Why the Bills Won't Trade Up to #2 (or 3 or 4)

But that would be a horrible deal. 12, 22, 56, a top 10 pick next year and more for - a QB who could not carry his college team to great success- yet many think that magically they will do just that with a Bills team under-talented and strangled by having traded away prime draft picks. -

Perhaps I was wrong, but I thought that your point was that the Bills wanted a QB this year, so they acquired extra picks to try to trade up for one. That was their PLAN, but circumstances may preclude them from making good on that plan. -

I’ve saved a lot of my income with a plan to retire at 55, but I am now closing in on 58 and circumstances have prevented me from retiring and likely won’t for at least 5 more years. Point is plans are plans, don’t confuse them with reality. -

If that is true, then Bills should not trade up for any of these guys if they aren’t better prospects than Davis Webb. -

But, the original post suggested that the Giants should not do the exact thing that we want the Bills to do. I honestly think it will be a long-term mistake if the Giants trade 2 instead of taking a QB. My reasoning is that Eli is close to done, if not done and they won’t likely be picking as high as 2nd again anytime soon. My view is that, while we’d like the Giants to pass on a QB and trade 2 for 12 & 22 & ?, we would all be furious if we were Giants fans and they did that. -

Well sure, if they can get up for a QB that the like, that should be the plan. However, there is a real chance that they can’t get into position to beat a QB that they like. Let’s say that they like 3 QBs a lot - in that scenario, there is a good chance that they will get shut-out. If that happens, and I’d say it is a 50-50 chance, it would be worse to just tak a QB to get one than to trade out or to take a very good prospect at another position. -
I am not an Allen fan, but I can’t see why he can’t be as good as Cam Newton. If you build a good OL to give him time, I think his completion % will be >60% and he will have several big plays down field with a decent receiving corp. i sort of think Newton is a good comp for Allen. Both have excellent arm strength, neither are anticipatory throwers, both have great size, both are running threats (Newton advantage). Anyone see it similarly?

If that is a good strategy, then why shouldn’t the Bills just sit tight and load up the roster aside from QB then go “all in” next year for a QB? -

I think that Rudolph is a borderline 1st/2nd round QB. I don’t think taking him at 22 is a terrible reach. I do think that Falk is a 4th/5th round pick. i could accept coming out of this draft without a QB, depending on who went before the Bills’ pick. I think it is likely that the Bills don’t like at least one of the big 4 QBs. In that scenario, I could see them trading out of 12 for a first next year or a later 1 and 2nd or third this year. It it would suck for sure to not get a QB, but if the price is exorbitant and you can’t get one they like, then what can you do? -

What does it feel like with your head in the sand? Not being able to or not wanting to trade up (due to picks before the pick we could reasonably get is a very real possibility. -

Well thought out, sir. As to the Broncos possibly trading out of pick 5 - the Broncos surely need a QB to be the long-term answer as I can’t imagine that they think that Case Keenum is that answer. So, if the Broncos are willing to trade from 5 to 12, it very likely means that they don’t think that whomever is left at QB is a long-term answer that is better than Keenum. While it is true that the Broncos may not be the be-all-end-all at evaluating QBs, it would leave me with great concern that a team that really needs a “franchise” QB would be willing to trade out of a spot that we want in to so that we can get a QB. -
Lance Zierlein compares Mayfield to Flutie.
OldTimer1960 replied to PIZ's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think the leadership and chip on the shoulder are very similar between Mayfield and Flutie, but I think Mayfield has a stronger arm and is more accurate. I think Mayfield is about 2.5” taller and built thicker than Flutie. i admired Flutie, but I think Mayfield is a better NFL prospect. -
I'm not arguing against trying to get a good QB prospect, just suggesting that this year may be rough because, in the best case, they will be playing a rookie QB and a number of other rookies as well. In worst case, they will be playing McCarron and a bunch of rookies. It would not be horrible if they have a 6 win season while getting a rookie QB and other position players experience, but it would really hurt if they have traded away next year's #1 to see it be a top-10 pick (that is, if they could have traded this year's 22nd and kept next year's #1).
