SF FA guard Mike Iupati (update: going to Cardinals)
billsfan89 replied to CJPearl2's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Rex knows the value of an O-line. Rex saw first hand in New York how ineffective his team got as the O-line degraded. His first year with the Jets their O-line was stacked. Mangold was one of the best centers in the league (Still pretty dam good), Ferguson was playing like a top 10 LT, Alan Faneca was still a top 10 guard, Damian Woody was a very good veteran RT, and the weakest link was Brandon Moore a solid starter. In 2010 they replaced Woody who retired with a well below average player in Wayne Hunter but the rest of the line was still pretty good. In 2011 Faneca was due a big hit on the cap and a bit past his prime so they cut him. They went cheap trying to replace Faneca with a cheaper younger player. From 2011-2014 the Jets were horribly mediocre the same as their offensive line. I think the signing of Incognito is a sign that Rex knows the value of the O-line. I suspect someone who makes a lot on the O-line gets cut and they bring in a fairly high profile guard. -
Too many crab legs for Winston?(update: pro day info)
billsfan89 replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I would pass on Winston. Being a QB in the NFL requires a madness of greatness. To be a good QB you have to be hard working and have the physical tools. You have 11 guys on the other side of the ball trying to ensure your failure (As well as the numerous coaches and staff that coach, prepare, and train them). You have 10 teammates around you that are trying to pull together to accomplish a goal and you have to incorporate all your coaches and staff's adjustments and coaching. Overall I think for a QB to be good and worth spending a very high draft choice on I better have no issues as far as work ethic. -
RUMOR: Colts interested in Dareus?
billsfan89 replied to fridge's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Even if the Colts gave you pick 29 and next years 1st I still wouldn't take it (Although it wouldn't be a terrible offer). Dareus is a game changing defensive tackle and very young, extend him and plug him there for the next 5+ years. -
How we should find a franchise QB
billsfan89 replied to Buffalo Barbarian's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
How do you acquire a QB should be the question you ask and then you move forward from there. 1- The Draft Top 5 pick. The top of the draft is where the top QB's go. Your Andrew Luck's and Peyton Manning types get drafted here. There are also second tier good to very good QB options like Matt Ryan, Matthew Stafford, Phillip Rivers, Cam Newton, Eli Manning (Probably the best of the bunch). Looking at the top QB's in the game its easy to feel like this is the best way to find a QB. But wiffing on these selections can set back franchises years. Currently in the league are possible busts Sam Bradford and RGIII as well as Mark Sanchez, and of course historically awful busts like Jamarcus Russell. 2- Picks 6-40. Later 1st round picks and early 2nd round picks. Some gems here like Aaron Rodgers, Joe Flacco and Ben Rothlisberger. But a lesser degree of success for guys like Andy Dalton, Jay Cutler, Colin Kapernick, Nick Foles, ect and tons of busts and probably busts like EJ, Geno Smith, Christian Ponder, Johnny Football, Tebow, Brady Quinn, Jimmy Calusen, Jake Locker, Blane Gabbert, ect. The investment level is lower as teams can rebound quicker but the level and rate of success goes down (Even Flacco and Rothlisberger were game managers for long periods of their careers). 3- Late in the draft. Beyond the beginning of round 2. Some gems Tom Brady, Russell Wilson, and Tony Romo. But those only come around once in a generation. There are tons of busts and career backups that come from the back end of the draft. Overall its not a very dependable route to go. 4- Free Agency. Good QB's simply don't become free agents. Drew Brees and Peyton Manning (At the back end of his career coming off of an injury) were once in a generation type things. The stars really have to align for a QB worth anything to be a free agent. Any QB's that become free agents are like reclamation projects or career backups. Very low level of success to go this route esp in finding anything more than a stop gap QB. 5- Trade. There are only 2 types of QB's that get traded backups or reclamation projects. Backups are risky at best they are Matt Schuab but most of the time they are Matt Cassell or Kevin Klob. Carson Palmer is probably a good example of a impactful reclamation project while Jay Cutler has been a mixed bag for the Bears. Its a weird situation to be in for the Bills because trade and free agency are their best options and there doesn't appear to be a good trade option on the market nor is there anything other than a stop gap on the free agent market. In the future the Bills would be better off drafting multiple QB's in round 1 and trying to develop them with a low degree of patience. -
Kane and Incognito, a sign of things to come?
billsfan89 replied to K D's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Incognito wasn't getting in trouble with the law, the guy isn't really a thug so much as he is an !@#$ with a screw loose. You can bring in one or two of those guys into a team as long as the rest of the locker room is good guys. -
Ultimate Offseason 2015 *EDITED
billsfan89 replied to BIllsNation's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If I were the GM I would re-do Mario's deal to add 5 million in cap space. I would also look to cut Keith Rivers and some other contracts to free up more cap space (I think there are players like Lawson and Rivers that could be easily cut to save cap space) Then I would try to resign Jerry Hughes or another one of the many pass rushers avaiable for around 10 million and sign Mike Iupati to fill the other guard position. As far as QB goes I bring in Jake Locker or Mark Sanchez sadly the best of the bunch but both guys give you an option at QB and can compete with EJ. Signing Iupati and Huges would pretty much cut out big signings for the Bills this year. With what little cap space there is I would resign Spikes if his demands are fair if not go sign David Harris. You could also probably resign Searcy to keep some of the depth on the defense. Draft wise I go tight end or WR round 1 to add to the play making ability of the offense and then just go best player available beyond that. I don't think the team should over spend on Hughes but a 8-9 million dollar a year deal seems fair if not 8-9 million a year could land you a really good replacement as this market is flooded with pass rushers. Iupati and Incognito sure up the guard position and taking a Tight End in round 2 patches another hole on offense. Keeping Spike or bringing in Harris keeps the front 7 very physical and stout against the run. Locker or Sanchez also brings a veteran option to the QB situation. Build depth with the rest of the draft and hopefully that's enough to get the team into the playoffs. -
Report: Broncos could part ways with Manning
billsfan89 replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Great Movie quote On the prospects of Manning going to Buffalo I don't see it. First off Manning is going to command 15+ million a year which would destroy our chances to keep Hughes or replace him with a quality pass rusher. It would also limit our ability to upgrade our O-line even though we got a decent guard in Incognito already in the fold. Overall I just don't see Peyton wanting to come to a team with a poor O-line and a limited amount of offensive options and draft choices. I would love for Manning to come here but the amount of money it would take wouldn't be worth it as we wouldn't be able to put the proper team around him unless he took a pay cut which he isn't going to do. I do see Denver restructuring his deal to try and keep more weapons around him. -
No franchise QB gets traded its a situation that is very rare. The type of QB's that get traded are either backups (Which have mixed success rates) or reclamation projects. Foles would be interesting if the Eagles were looking to get picks for a trade up. But overall I don't think the Bills will go trade market.

Buffaloed in Pa mock draft
billsfan89 replied to Buffaloed in Pa's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't think this team should go running back in rounds 2 or 3. There are much more pressing needs than RB. I am fine with Brown and Dixon as the speed and power back with Freddie being the receiver and third down back. Bring in a free agent or 5th round back as depth. I don't see the need to spend one of the two best draft assets the team has on that position. -
A lot of players seemed to regress on the offensive line the past couple of years. Wood, Urbik, and Glen all fairly young players regressed and the rookies brought in this past season didn't really develop even Henderson who came on strong seemed to mostly flat line as the season went on. Overall if Marrone is selling himself as an o-line guru he better not list the Bills on his resume. I am hoping Cyrus gets to compete with Incognito for that RG position or Henderson for that RT spot the guy was more of a project than anticipated but the guy has a lot of the physical traits.

Bills to go in little-talked-about direction at QB?
billsfan89 replied to Rubes's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Colin Kapernick is the only out there QB option I see for the Bills. Every free agent weither its Locker or Sanchez or the others has been talked about. A trade for Foles or Bradford has been talked about. The other "out there" QB options like trading for a franchise guy have been dismissed as fan hope/speculation. I think with Roman here and Kapernick not coming off the best year and a new coaching staff coming in, its possible San Fran might trade him. -
All Things Incognito (Richie returns, signs contract)
billsfan89 replied to RalphOP83's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think going RI for the Right Guard spot isn't a bad move if they are willing to put money into the Left Guard spot. But if they leave the Left Guard spot open its going to seem like a minor upgrade. Incognito gives the Bills a decent option at Right Guard but they still need to go out and find a starting caliber Left Guard to pair with him. Decent signing like the move but other moves need to be made. -
Richard Sherman blasts Goodell/Kraft relationship
billsfan89 replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Has there been a shittier commissioner than Rodger? The guy is doing so much long term damage to the sport in the name of short term profits. Even Gary Betteman has the excuse of the NHL being the least popular product of the 4 major sports. Goodell is ruining the sport. -
I think Pears, Spiller, and possibly Spikes and Hughes don't get resigned (Hughes and Spikes depend on price). As Far as cuts C.Williams will likely be cut due to his salary, I can also see Rivers getting cut due to not being a fit for the defensive scheme. I think Manny Lawson stays till training camp. Lawson was a fit in Pettin's scheme and I think the depth on the front 7 is important to Ryan's defense. So I think they keep Lawson in camp to see if another linebacker could beat him out for that spot. Interesting to see how many people think Freddie could be a causality. I think no matter what Freddie gets into training camp. Assuming the team lets CJ go even drafting a running back in the 2nd to 4th round still only puts Brown, player X, and Dixon on the roster. Hard to not see Freddie as being a third running back. The guy can catch and grind out yards, and is still decent in pass protection. For an all purpose back he has value. Unless the team resigns CJ I do not see a scenario where Freddie isn't on the team. Also I don't think Chandler is cut either. Chandler is a really good number 2 tight end and his salary isn't unreasonable. If a tight end gets drafted round 2 it would still help to have a veteran tight end on the roster. Even if the team spends in free agency on a tight end having Chandler for depth helps. But as the second best TE on the roster Chandler has value. Upgrading Tight end doesn't mean Chandler has no place on the roster. Depth is always key to building a winner. Even if the team drafted a player high or went into free agency to grab a TE doesn't mean Chandler couldn't be used in situations or as depth. His salary isn't unreasonable as far as tight ends go.

Meaningless mock drafts are fun
billsfan89 replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The top 2 picks are really good. But this draft only makes sense if the team addresses the guard issue big time in free agency. Tight end is a need always good to get another playmaker out on the offense. Going for a big bruising back in round 3 makes sense too although I would prioritize other positions but if Yeldon is sitting there at 81 the value is too good. Yeldon would be the thunder to Bryce Brown's lighting, while Freddie would be the all purpose back. Dixon would slide back to being depth and special teams. -
Being an offensive assistant under Greg Roman might actually allow Hackett to develop. Learn under a guy who has been doing the job for a few years in a relatively successful system. Hackett was simply in over his head and Marrone was probably not the right mentor.

Bills parting ways with CJ Spiller? - NFL Insiders on ESPN
billsfan89 replied to K D's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Not a huge loss if the team lets him go. Upgrade the O-line and it will upgrade the running game. I think CJ can be productive in a Darren Sproles like role. But this team shouldn't pay more than role player money to keep CJ. -
The Bills would be the local guy who they hired for the night just to lose to the main event guy in 30 seconds.

Report: Chip planning to move up for Mariota
billsfan89 replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The Eagles will have to part with 20, 52, and next years 1st along with packaging Foles (Or trading Foles for picks and adding those picks into a package). Lets say you get a 2nd and a 4th for Foles, you could then package that with picks 20, 52, another mid round pick and a future 1st. But I am not sure that the Eagles would still have enough to move up. Maybe adding in more future picks would put the trade over the top. -
The salary cap no longer works as intended
billsfan89 replied to BillsVet's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The reason playoff appearances get stacked to a set of teams disproportionately is because of the QB position. Teams with a top 5-7 QB are going to make the playoffs year in and year out if not close to that. Teams with good QB's 8-13 are going to be in contention for the playoffs every year. If you fall into the bottom half of the league in terms of QB play you are going to make the playoffs a lot less having to depend on a defense and a team effort to compensate for the QB. I am not sure what you could really do to remedy the situation. Maybe as advanced scouting and stats is aging scouts can predict which QB's out of college will do better. But still there are only so many people that can play the QB position. Either way QB's are the reason why you don't see more parity in the NFL. The salary cap does make committing 20+ million to a QB weaken the team and have a negative consequence. But overall the position is so much at a premium and rare that its not enough to overcome that one negative. -
ANYONE ELSE HAVE SYMPATHY FOR HACKETT?
billsfan89 replied to BillAndPhilFan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It was just a case of a guy being in over his head. A lack of talent combined with a bad head coach tanked the guy. He probably should have been brought on at a lower level position and brought along slowly. The guy is going to get another job but it sucked that his big break was a little too soon for him. -
Should we sign DeMarco Murray?
billsfan89 replied to TheBillsWillRiseAgain's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yes if the price is right at 6-7 million a year along with not having to guarantee that much beyond the first year and maybe a small or modest guarantee year 2. But that would only be a real option if the team picked up a monster guard and kept Hughes and other defensive free agents. But I doubt Murray would want to go to a team with no QB. I think Murray would have enough suitors to pick his destination.
