He will get more interviews, hopefully the other orgs don't like him or he doesn't like the other orgs. -
Bills 17th game next season vs. Washington
billsfan89 replied to Estro's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The WFT will have another draft and a good amount of cap space to work with to supplement their other needs. With a competent QB in Alex Smith and a moderate amount of talent upgraded to their skill positions and secondary they will be a tough out. -
I suspect Allen will finish second in the MVP voting behind Rodgers. Wilson trailed off a bit and fell behind Josh in total TD's and yardage. Mahomes won passing yardage but fell behind on total TD's and total yards. Rodgers is also the veteran guy who hasn't won in a long time for the best team in the NFC this year. All 5 candidates for MVP (Rodgers, Josh, Mahomes, Wilson and Henry) are on teams that won between 11-14 games, so they are all winners who made the playoffs and won their division. Rodgers wins it by a hair but Josh will and should be second place in votes.

The Colts were the best matchup out of the 3 wildcard teams. I don't trust Rivers esp in bad weather, the Colts ground game with Taylor is good but it isn't as lethal as the Ravens or Browns, and the Colts defense is suspect in the passing attack. It would be a major disappointment if this game wasn't a comfortable 2 possession lead late.

Should a losing team go to playoffs?
billsfan89 replied to BananaB's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
They definitely shouldn't get a home game if they are under .500. I also agree with the take that if a division winner is under .500 then a 4th wildcard should open up. -
Depends on who they get and how much they give up? Matt Ryan in that short passing system is intriguing as he likely still has a few years left at a high level. If a player like Ryan can be had for a pair of 2nd round picks and he take a modest pay cut the Pats could get going if they find the right pieces. But I also think Billy B likely feels even his own fading coaching career shouldn't come in the way of the team. I think he would rather draft a QB and sign a vet vs trying to hot shot a vet QB. But we will see how this all goes.
-
I think a Tyrod type vet QB is probably a plan B or C for the Pats, I could see Phillip Rivers being a more likely fall back option if he wants a plug and play vet. I think the path that makes sense for the Pats is to try and trade for an established QB. Matt Ryan, Dak, Matt Stafford and Derek Carr could all be available via trade and I think had for a reasonable price. All of those QB's would represent above average QB play on contracts that (with the exception of Dak) would be not killer considering the position's value. That issue would of course be that they would have to give up a premium draft pick or picks and dig into a lot of your cap space. It will be interesting to see how they go about this.

I think Billy B wants to at least be a competitive 9+ win team without Brady and make the playoffs a few times and win the division without Brady just to show that even with a so/so QB he can still get to 9+ wins because he is such a great coach. I don't think he can realistically expect to compete for a Super Bowl if he can't find a QB. But I think he would settle for in the last 5 years of his career to make the playoffs 4 times and win 2 playoff games. That wouldn't set the world on fire but it would prove that while Brady was an important piece he was still able to field a good team without him. But the dynasty, 12 wins year in and year out, dominance of the division and 72% winning percentage in the post season? That's over unless they unearth a miracle at QB.

I would love to see this team stick with Knox as the starter, I think he has come on strong to end the season. But I do think they should look to find a competent vet TE to pair him with. I hope they can find a better complement to Knox than Kroft who while a decent player who does the more polished stuff that Knox doesn't but isn't reliable health wise. I don't know who is on the market that would make sense for their price range but it would be where I would try to go.
-
I don't think they pooched the season so much as Billy B took a step back to take several steps forward. Eat the Brady dead cap and other dead cap space, take on the covid opt outs and see what you can make from a depleted roster. Then regroup in 2021 when you can have several starting players return from a season of rest and you have a good amount of cap space and draft picks to work with. Either way, good luck finding a QB that will get you past that 10 win good but not great level, it can take decades to find a competent one let along a franchise QB.

If Stidham was worth playing he would have beaten out Cam in their camp or during their season, they also had several low points in the season where they could have reasonably played Stidham and benched Cam yet they didn't. At one point they were sitting at 2-5 and they could have easily justified playing Stidham in what was already a lost season. Yet they didn't, which to me tells me they just don't see Stidham as the answer.

In the next 3 years (which is about as far out as you can project in the NFL) I don't see the Pats being a bad team. They got 6-7 wins off of a roster depleted due to dead cap and opt outs. They won 12 games last year with an elite ST and defense. In 2021 they will get back key players on defense and the O-line from the Covid opt outs and they will have the cap space to supplement additional needs on their roster as well as a decent selection of draft choices higher than they are used to. They will not be an easy out in 2021. However unless they find a QB I don't see them being more than a 10 win competitive team that won't get past the divisional round. Billy B will keep that defense and special teams units strong but the offense won't be good enough to make serious noise in the playoffs and Billy B isn't a spring chicken. Billy B is 68 years old and will be 69 next season. He doesn't have 10 years to build back up the team and find a QB. I can't see him coaching more than 5 seasons (and 5 seasons is generous but possible) and as this franchise knows it can take decades to find a decent QB let alone a franchise QB. So the Pats will be a pesky team that can run the football, play good to great defense and elite ST play. But if they can't get a good QB (let alone an elite one) then they will be stuck in the good but not great category for a long time.

Every time I see Stidham I don't see a good QB. I think Cam brought a running dimension to the team that Stidham wouldn't have brought. Honestly any QB they realistically could have found dropped into that dumpster fire (no WR's, suspect O-line, no TE's and a banged up RB situation) of an offense was doomed to fail. There is only so much good coaching could make up.
-
Who was a better option for a capped out team drafting late in a so/so QB class? Genuinely asking because while I think Cam wasn't the alternative I am not sure who they could have gotten that could have gotten this ass team 6-7 wins. Cam for all his faults had the team at 6-6 and doesn't impact their cap long term.

Ford I think was playing well at guard before he got hurt. But Ike has come in and been impressive. However I think Mongo has been the Xfactor on the Oline. He not only is a mauler but he has the intangibles that seems to improve the play of the unit. I also think that Williams has played better and better as they year has gone on which has helped the overall play of the oline.
-
You have to pick up the 5th year option. Then see if his demands for an extension fit what you do. If not just let him play out year 4 and start negotiations again in year 5.

Week 16 Postgame Thread Bills @ Pats*

This game was awesome. A little bit of a shaky start but the team fired on all cylinders to end the first half and never looked back. -
Meaningless late season games
billsfan89 replied to Bills fan since 87's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Definitely not meaningless as the seeding is important. I think a win tonight clinches a 3 seed. The 3 seed is important because it ensures you avoid KC until the AFCCG. The 2 seed is also still in play which gives you homefield for the first two rounds and against anyone besides KC. But it is nice to have the playoffs and a good seed locked up with 2 games left to go. It feels good to be jockeying for position as to hoping to squeak in or wondering if this team has been eliminated yet. During the drought years by week 16 most seasons this team would have been officially eliminated and we would be hoping to lose out to get a better draft pick. -
If I am to breakdown the weaknesses of each team. Steelers - Can't run the ball and inconsistent offense at times, defense is also a bit banged up. Browns - Defense is inconsistent and the pass offense can be inconsistent. Dolphins - Their offense is vastly limited. Colts - Rivers can struggle at times and their defense can have lapses Ravens - Passing offense can struggle a lot. Titans - Defense has had lapses and their passing offense can be contained. KC - Not many weaknesses here, the team can come out flat at times and their defense is OK at times. The Bills have their weaknesses too. I am still worried about the rushing defense and if John Brown isn't there the offense can be limited if Josh has to be one dimensional against a stronger defense. But outside of KC I don't see a team I am not comfortable against.

No easy outs this year. The 4 possible wildcard teams are difficult outs and the 3 other divisional winners aren't easy outs either. Cleveland can run the ball, they have an elite pass rusher who can take over games, a QB who can put up a big game and a good ST unit. Miami has a vet QB and an offense that while probably the least talented in the AFC playoffs is still a team that boasts one of the best defenses in the league is well coached with a decent ST unit. The Colts have a veteran QB, good defense, good ground game and a good ST unit. The Ravens have an MVP caliber QB, an elite defense and a ground attack that can hurt you along with the best kicker in the league and a Super Bowl winning coach. The divisional winners are good too. KC is the best team in football with a super human QB with one of the best offensive pieces around him, a solid defense and a SB winning coaching staff. The Steelers boast a strong defense, 2 time Super Bowl winning QB, SB winning coach, solid ST unit and an offense that can get it done just enough. The Titans (assuming they win their division) have the best RB in the NFL, a QB who is better than I thought, and are well coached and tough. Luckily the Bills have a top 5 QB, an elite offensive supporting cast, a defense playing at a top 10 level, a highly underrated ST unit and are well coached. This team is insanely loaded and only KC is likely to be favored over them. Go Bills.

I can see NFL Sunday Ticket go to Amazon Prime
billsfan89 replied to Draconator's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think Amazon would consider having it as part of Prime Video but at an extra cost. I can't see Amazon making the money off of it needed to justify the huge money. 112 million Americans have Amazon Prime, so how many more would go buy Amazon Prime for 130 dollars a year or so just for the NFL? I would imagine some would but the NFL Sunday Ticket contract currently costs about 1.5 billion a year, I currently think that in 2023 when that deal expires it would likely cost Amazon 2 billion a year to get that contract. That would mean that Amazon would likely need to add 14-20 million more Prime subscribers (depending on if they subscribe all year or just for football season) to make the economics work. And with 112 million Americans I think Amazon would probably charge less money than Direct TV as they would likely treat the product as a loss leader to get more people into their ecosystem. But I still think they would need to have a 150 dollar charge for it on top of the Amazon service fee. I would be mighty tempted to sign up for it as I already have Prime from my job so to pay about 10 dollars a game to watch the Bills and get the rest of the NFL is solid value. -
Snacks to be released, get on the phone Beane!

I wonder if Snacks regrets not signing with Miami when they offered him a contract? -
This is Kipers quotes about Ford and Knox. https://www.democratandchronicle.com/story/sports/football/nfl/bills/2019/04/28/buffalo-bills-nfl-draft-team-grades-2019-ed-oliver-cody-ford-singletary-espn-mel-kiper-experts/3605488002/ "He’s a mauler in the run game, and I thought he could go in the top 20 picks. That’s a steal." https://www.buffalobills.com/news/mock-draft-watch-8-0 Knox is one of the most underrated offensive prospects in this class. In this scenario, we're getting help for Josh Allen with Knox and wideout N'Keal Harry at No. 40. (Kiper)
