Buftex Posted June 20, 2009 Share Posted June 20, 2009 When you spend a lot of time on a message board, like this one, it is hard not to notice that for every thing that is "great", or "the best ever", there are dozens of people who will come out in droves and tell you that whatever it is you hold in high esteem, is overrated. Doesn't matter if it is sports, politics, books, movies, music....for every admirer there are as many bashers... maybe I am starting to feel old, but I just appreciate things that stand the test of time, things that work... Tell me, what is something great, that you don't think is overrated...I will start: The Beatles- I recently got done watching the Beatles Anthology...I had seen it years ago, when my appreciation of their music had wained a little, as I was in to other things. Growing up, I was a Beatles fanatic...but then, when I got in my later teens, I started listening to other stuff. For a long time, the Beatles had been supplanted by the Rolling Stones, as my all time favorite rock band. The Who, the Clash, were all right up there too...but I never stopped liking the Beatles...I kind of feel like I am "re-discovering" them all over again, almost 30 years later...their history is perfect. They weren't together long enough for some of their lesser solo efforts taint the band's repertoire. I will say it, while there are some songs I like more than others, there isn't one Beatles song I hate...okay, I might skip through "Revolution #9" once in a while, but other than that... As a band, they were as innovative as any in pop music, and my god, just the depth of amazing songs they wrote and recorded in that 8 years... what struck me, while watching the Anthology, toward the end (from the White album through their final album, "Abbey Road") was just how prolific they continued to be. They never seemed to be cashing in on their name, as most pop acts do, once they attain a certain level of success. I realize that Lennon, McCartney and Harrison all pretty much wrote their own songs, to watch them perform the songs together, it just seems that there wasn't any pettiness when it came to the music... Lennon was as big a fan of McCartney as McCartney was of Lennon, even though their styles were so different. To think, as the guys in the band were all at each others throats, things were falling apart around them, but they were still able to come up with songs like "Don't Let Me Down", "Let It Be", "The Long and Winding Road", "Hey Jude", "Revolution", "Paperback Writer"',"Something", "Here Comes the Sun", "Come Together", "Get Back", etc etc...the quality of their music only got stronger...George Harrison really emerged as a quality peer to Lennon and McCartney. I realize, none of them were great musicians individually, and that George Martin was a big part of their sound, but whatever it was, as a collective, I think their music sounds as vital and relevant today, as it did 40 years ago...it doesn't sound dated I loathe the majority of the solo stuff that Paul McCartney did, but during his time with that group, he wrote some of the most amazingly durable pop songs, ever. I listen to the Sinatra channel on Sirius, and I found a station out of Youngstown that plays that type of music (WNIO.com) that's also the affiliate of the Indians' NYP league team, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. - Waking up without a toe tag.- Morning coffee. - NFL Sunday Ticket. - Canadian beer. - A Sunday in PJ's. - A late night bonfire. BillsPride12 Posted June 20, 2009 Share Posted June 20, 2009 Michael Jordan- best athlete I ever got to watch his entire career, I will be telling my grandkids about watching Michael Jordan play basketball someday Playing little league through High School football- To this day those are still some of the best damn times of my life and I have so many memories and friends that I will never forget because of it, wish I had a time machine to go back and do it again but for now the memories will have to do. Traveling- I have resided in WNY my whole life and embrace the down to earth blue-collar culture of living around here, but at the same time I really appreciate traveling to other areas and experiencing what they have to other, you should always make the most of any opportunity you get to see another part of the country/world. Could a burp, a fart or a shyt all qualify for this term? Come to think of it puking might possibly make the cut as well in particular situations. One probably wouldn't maintain that ALL exeges (?) from the body would qualify at all times but that a cathartic evacuation is a particularly impressive one?
