I know this is very important for us to know, especially on Defense so I Googled it just now and though I don't have Pro Football Focus, it wasn't behind their paywall!

Can someone explain why we don't call defensive ends that anymore?  They need to be EDGE (in all caps) because why?

The Bills win and you get bonus information but you have to complain? 😄

It's because nickel defenses are taking over the NFL and a base 43 and 34 are getting condensed

A defensive end in the 43 is the same as a pass rushing outside linebacker in a 34

Micah Parsons and gregg Rousseau are both on the edge even though they play a different position

Thanks for finding and posting this - I was curious myself as to some of the combos we saw on the field how much rotating was happening.

While it doesn’t really matter, I found it interesting that SVPG came in as the center at the end of the game and AA at guard. We learned a few weeks ago that AA is actually the true backup center for the team, you’d think they’d use garbage time to get him practice snaps over your third string center.

Also why you’ll see 3-4 MLBs and 4-3 LBs lumped together as “off-ball LBs” these days.

Yes offball and on ball linebackers are grouped together

Matt Milano in a 3-4 would be in inside backer in the will role

It’s because some play with one/two hand(s) down and some play with no hands down. But they both are pass rush specialists. It’s pretty obvious and clear why the EDGE designation exists.

Hmm Benford all 54 snaps, and then White 41 + Hairston 27 so 68 total?

Any ideas what is going on?

Yea can't be accurate

Some interesting stuff in there:

- Maxwell Hairston's 27 snaps to Tre White's 41 was a little more than I expected to be put on his plate in his first week. Real good sign that moves up the timeline.

- Hoecht taking the most amount of snaps at Edge is (even more than Rousseau) is surprising. As is Bosa coming in at 4th in the snap count. Seems with a fully healthy Edge room (crazy that we haven't lose a single DE but have lost FOUR DT's), there's been a push to limit Bosa to keep him healthy.

- Shaq Thompson taking every single snap as a starting Linebacker is great to see. I think he's been far and away the best and most consistent Linebacker all season. And has stayed on the field. Keep him on the field until Milano is 100+%. And even then, cycle them.

- Crazy to me that Keon Coleman *far and away* takes the most snaps at WR and provides us with so little. So sad.

- Sort of surprising to me to see Elijah Moore outs nap Samuel, as when Samuel is healthy, I think he provides (slightly) more. Maybe they were limiting his reps in returning to the field.

This is a really good question. I don't have access to the All 22 so I really can't say.

I'm often complaining during the games that the directors are way too interested in closeup shots and not interested enough with wide shots which often times convey more information.

Answers to your question are exactly the type of insights I wish we received from the Bills beat reporters.

I think Hoecht kept playing to get reps after Bosa and Groot hit the bench in the 4th.

Regarding your point about Hoecht, as Simon and others have pointed out, he also was taking snaps at DT so PFF didn't separate those snaps.

Regarding Coleman, whether people care or not, one of the reasons he gets high snap counts is because of his run blocking.

I agree.

Maybe they're playing a few different versions of dime?

The DB breakdown in general is interesting.

An Edge is an Edge no matter the defensive alignment, otherwise it's easier than DE/OLB

Yeah I was wondering the same.  Maybe it's that new modern math!

I read that Hairston and White were alternating each series.  Hairston was exactly half the number of total snaps so makes me wonder if White's number is incorrect??
