The Pats have gotten punt returns for TDs in their two wins. Might wanna stop that.

I don't know what's going on with special teams blocking right now but we have had what, like 10 blocked punts and FG's this year already?

the bills are lucky too. Have had three near misses (FG, and two punts that could have been blocked).

I don't know either, but in this case this turned into a TD.

Well, since we don’t have a punter, this should not be a problem…

I'm sure Ray Davis can do it.

Honestly, have Josh kick it out of shotgun if it's close to midfield.

If you have the first team offense out there, the defense has to have their first team defense out there.

Josh can kick it down the field because there won't be a return man.  I'm confident he can roll that ball 35-40 yards down the field.

I'm looking at the game film from the NE-Carolina game to see how the blowout happened. I believe that all games have an inflection point. Even blowouts like that one. In this case, I think it was in the 2nd/ the Panthers were moving the ball early in the second quarter and were only down 14-6. It was 2-5 from the NE 26. Bryce Young in the shotgun and they call a passing play. The LG gets absolutely destroyed with a swim move and Chaisson get a free lane up the middle. Young scrambles and trips over his own feet. Loses 11 yards. Then the Panthers kicker misses his second kick of the day (it was 14-6 because he missed an XP) and the Pats use the field position to get a TD. The rout was on.

They also got two TDs off of LONG punt returns.

It's well known the Bills would rather give up rushing yards than passing yards. You let teams run all over you between the 20's but you don't allow them a TD

We've given up a TD on 63.64% of red zone trips which ranks 21st. We need to be top 10 at worst in that metric for that philosophy to work.

I wish we did this.

Put Josh in shotgun. If he has someone open, throw it. If he has a lane, run in. If the play is DOA, pooch it.

Whilst I don't disagree with any of that, which is a very good summary of McDermott's philiosophy, I think the fear is that the bend don't break and rely on timely turnovers, is much more likely to completely break against the better teams that we will face, especially in the post season (as recent history has shown).

I think the biggest problem in the post season with the defense has been injuries. KC game is entirely different if Benford doesnt go out with a concussion. We have been missing key defenders at every level in every playoff game. I don't think its due to the style of defense but rather the availability of players. Getting that first round bye is KEY.

Also, Josh Allen had the ball in his hands at the end of the game in two of our playoff losses recently (No I am not blaming Josh Allen entirely).

I'll blame Josh. Ultimately, he called the wrong protection on the final play of the season. Yes, we were not even in that position without him, but he made a mistake on the final play. And he would be the first one to tell you that. I wouldn't trade him for any player in the league, but he messed up there. Still almost made a play.

Oh I agree completely, but thats why I said I dont blame him entirely. Teams win and lose, but my point was Josh had the ball at the end, which is what we 100% want in a close end of game drive (rather than having the defense out there to hold a lead).

He didn’t almost make a play there, he did make a play there hitting Kincaid in the hands, just wish it didn’t have to be so hectic on that final play.

I also like to give Spags some credit.

Diggs has been lining up in the slot a lot, so we will likely see Taron vs. Diggs for the majority of the game unless the Patriots switch things up and try to get Diggs mismatched on White.

Special teams needs to be buttoned up, that portion of this game worries me.

Our offense should be able to do what they do, find a way to move the ball and score at least 30 points. Patriots have some playmakers on defense, but our offense is what it is, and is led by Josh Allen.

Or we just score more.

I'm pretty certain the Bills defense is going to get better as the season goes on, provided there aren't a bunch of injuries late in the season. This year feels different than previous years. A bunch of minor injuries early in the season as well as guys coming back from suspension is setting the team up for a late season run.

This is key. With a Bills defense improving, forcing more stops, that gives Josh and the offense more opportunities to score. Nothing is guaranteed but I really like how things are playing out so far. Could be a special year.

Worth adding that the defense is trying new schematic things.  As they master those parts they will improve and hopefully itll lead to an identity for this defense.  But right now were struggling with things like getting set or getting people on the field.  Some of that is coaching but also think some is cause players are still learning too.
