Wow. All the greats from my younger years, and through the decades drifting away.

I saw "Three Days of the Condor" for the first time a few years ago. Really great movie.

He always seemed to portray a quiet, steely sincerity. RIP!

We were extras in the stands at the Rockpile during filming.  Afterwards there was a media scrum around Mr. Redford on the ball diamond and being a little kid I squeezed thru a sea of legs towards the bright camera lights when Bam! an arm from one of the other baseball actors caught me just before I would have crashed right into the star.  RR looked down at me and said something that made everyone laugh- I have no idea what it was but it doesn't matter, just having this little story in my pocket involving such a legendary icon has always made me happy.  RIP

i heard a cool story from a union official when they were filming The Natural.  Redford wanted a farm house, somewhere where he could keep his horses while filming.  So they scouted the Buffalo rural areas.  When he found one he liked, he approached the owners and offered them an ungodly amount for the early 80s.  Say, $5,000 per week or something.

Then, he said he wanted to bring in his own furnishings.  He would put all of their furniture in storage, and when he was going to leave, he would put everything back just the way it was.

Or the owners could keep the furnishings he brought in.

In another quick story, I had a friend who was working on the film as a driver.  One day, he was driving some film big wigs from Cali around Buffalo.  He had to drive them around downtown for a while and places like mansion row on Delaware.  He said they were utterly amazed at some of the architecture in Buffalo and they had no idea  Buffalo had some really nice areas.

There’s a famous old story:  When Mike Nichols was making The Graduate, Robert Redford wanted to play the lead. Nichols had to reject him because he didn’t think he could play a loser. Nichols asked Redford, “Have you ever struck out with a girl?” and Redford was basically like I don’t understand the question.

He was great as death on The Twilight Zone. Now him and Newman can pull cons up in heaven.
