Surgery.  Out a minimum of three months.  Unlikely we see him later in the season.

Tough break for the Bengals and their fans.  Browning is a nice backup and can win them a few games but this likely all but seals up the North for the Ravens, because the Browns suck and I don’t think the Steelers are much better.

Three months. Ouch.

Fortunately for the Bengals, Browning has shown he's capable of winning games. No, he's not nearly as good as Burrow, but paired with their weapons, he can have success.

3 months is a long time, but that still leaves him open for a return in December.

This is the type of Karma that Mike Brown farms with his dumb approach to re-signing/not paying players.

I’ve actually been thinking about this a lot.

With the Bengals losing Joe for 3 months, how much does it cost to pry Kirk Cousins out of Atlanta?

A 3rd rounder? Kirk isn’t great but with 2 great weapons can he keep them

in the mix for a WC spot?

I think if it were a different team, you may say “oh well, let’s keep our assets and if we pick 12 next year, we will be better off a year from now” but the Bengals haven’t made the playoffs in 2 years. There may be more desperation there.

Browning can hold the fort and win enough games maybe to qualify and give Burrow time to come back.  That offense is loaded.

Im not sure Brown would want to be on the hook for Cousins' money

Late December.  The Bengals are toast.  Their defense isn’t the sort that can carry them, and as nice of a backup as Browning is he’s not going to put a team on his shoulders.  I can see Cinci losing a bunch of 31-24ish games.

There is a reason Carson Palmer said they would ruin him. Their inability to protect him will end his career far faster then it should which is unfortunate for the game. If it is true he could be back for the last four games of the season though if they can be 6-7 at that point they can still have a shot for the playoffs. That is only 4-7 but their schedule is no joke and they don't have a defense that can win games either.

Why though?  They played pretty good on offense two years ago when burrow was out.

although nowhere near the player burrow is the passing game was still good with browning.

plus how would they fit cousins money into their cap?

It’s be fun to watch the ravens trot out Lamar to pad his MVP stats in weeks 17-18 with a 3 game division lead and no chance at home field.

Cousins’ money is largely tied up in Atlanta.

If Cousins was traded from Atlanta, today, Atlanta would eat $37M over this year and next in dead cap.

Cousins would only be getting his 2025 base salary with Cincinnati.

They could restructure Burrow’s $41M cap hit and fit Cousins tomorrow.

I’m not saying that’s a great idea by any means, as that’s kicking Burrow’s can down the road more and that’s still a significant cost for a 12 game rental, but if the GM/HC are in danger of getting fired if they missed the playoffs again, why do they care?

Sucks for the Bengals.  At least Browning has shown to be capable to keep them competitive, but he's no Joe.

As for the Bills angle (because this is a Bills board)....I don't think this helps us.  The AFC North was supposed to be a gauntlet and now it looks as easy as the AFC East to be honest.  Cleveland is lousy, Pittsburgh is about the same level as the Jets at best...and Cincinnati is now less of a threat offensively and have a nothing special on defense.  We thought the Bengals would threaten Baltimore and win a game or maybe two from them.  Now Baltimore will probably go 6-0 in division.

I didn’t realize that.  Atlanta would probably ask for a really high pick in that scenario.

browning can move the ball in the air so unless he all of a sudden turns the ball over 5 times a game I am not sure why the bengals would seek out cousins.

I’d rather go with Browning.  He might actually be the better QB at this point.  He kept them in the mix 2 years ago.  He’s proven to be a gamer and pretty solid in the 4th qtr of game.  Kirk was pretty terrible last season coming off injury

That is true.  Also factor in being in the offense/system for a handful of seasons (including playing time).

I don’t think that’s the case either.

Kirk has a no trade clause, and basically no market via trade. They are almost certainly gonna cut bait with him next year.  This may be their only chance to get ANYTHING for him.

Oh I totally get not doing it if the Bengals think rolling with Browning is better. And I think there’s an argument that is in fact the case.

i just think this is the EXACT scenario Atlanta (and Kirk) was hoping for. A medium term injury to a team with playoff expectations who may need a desperate QB trade. Kirk gets his money upfront and a chance to play for another payday, Atlanta gets a pick for a dude who is a guaranteed cut next offseason.
