Jets were pumped to play Aaron Rodgers. Against the Bills, they came crashing to Earth. It's a reflection on Glenn not getting his team prepared. Only his second game, so maybe he'll learn. I do like Glenn, but we'll see if he is a victim of the Peter Principle.

Glenn coached scared yesterday.  Maybe he will get better but that was a poor coaching job on Sunday.   The Bills coasted in a place that is has been hard to win in.

I’m not sure that’s accurate or fair.  They perhaps understandably want to see whether Fields is capable of running a normal NFL offense.  Yesterday would suggest he isn’t.  He was missing open receivers and bailing from muddy but playable pockets.  Fields wasn’t giving them a chance yesterday.  It doesn’t help that they have an even worse receiver situation than we do - they literally have only one good skill player on offense.  Now they’ll have to pivot to a super creative option-based offense that features Fields’ running abilities if they want to stay competitive offensively.  On defense, if you play man coverage that often you’d better be clean with your technique and yesterday they were either too grabby or ran into the wrong officiating crew.  Either way I don’t think Glenn coached scared.

If not scared, then ultra conservative for a team that was an underdog at home and had to make a statement.

Dramatic would have been "Aaron Glenn will be a great coach in only 1 week and take the Jets to the SuperBowl!!!"

Suggesting that we need to watch out for him down the road and that he's going to become a problem over the next couple years isn't exactly overdramatizing it, imo.

Just take the L and move on. You made a bad prediction. It happens to the best of us. The verbal gymnastics to justify it are not helping.

Predicting that he was going to become a good coach over the next couple years has been proven wrong in 5 days?

I wouldn't write Glenn off yet.  It's year one.

Unfortunately, he's coaching the Jests.  I doubt that any HC can find real success with the Jests under the Johnson family.  Unless the Johnsons sell the team or one of the younger Johnsons takes over the team and changes ownership's philosophy, nothing will really change.    We saw it with the Bills and with the Lions.   Both teams were perpetual bottom feeders until there was a change in ownership: Pegula bought the Bills and Harp took over the running of the team from her mother.

Its all about getting a qb that hits. If he doesn't he'll go on the trash heap as well. I highly doubt Fields is the answer.

Fields is an Allen/Jackson/Mahomes wannabe.  He can run, and his passing has improved, but I think his biggest issue is that he doesn't have the intangibles that make Allen/Jackson/Mahomes great.  He can look good if he's not under pressure but he wilts when things don't go his way.   I think that that was why the Steelers benched him for Wilson last season.

If any HC gets a QB, they will be fine.

teams aren’t firing everybody every couple years because they can’t find a coach worth a damn. It’s because they can’t find a QB

That's such a simplistic take that it borders on nonsense.

The history of the NFL is littered with examples of HCs who had good/great QBs but were still fired/let go.  The first one who comes to mind is Mike McCarthy who was fired by the Packers (Rodgers) and by the Cowboys (Prescott).

Furthermore, teams that fire their coaches every few years aren't just failing to find the right QB.  They are crappy organizations starting with the owners, so they fail to field winning teams, which may or may not be the fault of the HC:

  • During the Drought era, the Bills had an excellent veteran QB in Drew Bledsoe for 3 seasons, but they didn't support him, and finally sent him packing because they didn't want to pay him.
  • The Lions chose Matthew Stafford as the #1 overall pick in 2009.  In his 12 seasons in Detroit, Stafford had 3 HCs:  Jim Schwartz, Tom Caldwell, and Matt Patricia.  Stafford was always a good/great QB despite the teams around him.  During that span, the Lions had 3 playoff appearances but failed to win a playoff game.  He went to LA and won the SB with the Rams in his first season.
  • The Jets are another team with crappy ownership.  The Jests have not only missed on picking "the right QB" for 20+ years, they have failed to develop the "right QBs" they did find, namely Geno Smith and Sam Darnold, who have gone to be named Pro Bowlers and take other teams to the playoffs.

If it was almost any other franchise I would say “no.”

Since it’s the Jets…

How successful could he possibly be with the Jets? That's a graveyard for coaches and QB's. That's not a reflection on him. It's a reflection on incompetence that starts with ownership. Belichick chose the Patriots over the Jets. Because he knew what was about to happen. And it ultimately led to two franchises going into two very different directions for twenty years.

I do think their defense will get better. But without a legit QB it doesn't matter. Speaking of, is this Fields last season in the NFL if he flames out? He is what he is and isn't getting better.

Never thought the Lions defense was any good under Glenn, not sure why he was even considered a HC candidate. Jmo. Must of had a great interview.

2021: 31st in points allowed

2022: 28th in points allowed and last in total yards allowed

2023: 23rd in points allowed and 19th in total yards allowed

2024: 7th in points allowed and 20th in total yards allowed

You would be correct.

I just can’t believe that Glenn didn’t sign off on making Fields the “guy” this offseason and pay him way more than he should have gotten in the open market.

Im sure he did.  I just expected a far more interesting offense accentuating his strengths than what they’re putting out there. And whatever they’re doing is so basic that the Bills knew exactly when to send corner blitzes, something you only do when you have a strong belief you know the play call based on the formation.

Where are all the Breece Hall truthers today?

If you don't let him run gun straight through you (and the Bills didn't) he is done. I've seen tankers with quicker changes of direction. The touchdown run Cook had is a 3 yard gain for Breece Hall.

That Cook run is one of the best I ever saw.

I think Fields is just lousy.  And looks scared on the field.  He has not improved one bit since his rookie season.  The narrative that this guy should be a starting QB in the NFL is just false. This is year 5. And he misses guys all over the place and is super tentative.

He doesn’t elevate the guys around him.  Never has.  Hard to win with that as your starting QB.

The Jets should have signed Jameis Winston over Fields for the half the money.  Certainly a better investment.  At least Jameis gives you a chance every week.  And doesn’t play scared.

The Jets are clearly a year away at best from being a playoff team. I thought their o-line and RB's could give the the DT group without Ed some issues. Because Simpson and Tippman are good players there. But dam the Jets Oline that handled TJ Watt and the Steelers was complete handled by the Bills missing their best DT and arguably best D-linemen.

The Jets issue is that they have bad ownership off the field and on the field they don't have a QB and are missing a few other pieces elsewhere (They need a WR2 and maybe one additional complementary offensive weapon and a few additional pieces on defense). Glenn is trying to just right the ship and build a culture. I think it was smart for them to tank a year and clear out their contracts and likely get a top 10 draft pick and put themselves in position to trade up for a QB and have the cap space to add some pieces on offense and defense.

But their longer term fortunes are going to rest on can they figure things out off the field with ownership and how good a QB can they get?
