Books have been written about this since the late 1800’s. Rod Serling predicted this in numerous Twilight Zones, countless movies as well. While everyone found it all amusing a few took notice. Now who’s laughing?

I lost my job at Yahoo to AI, so I definitely believe this to be a possibility.

We are headed rapidly toward a universal basic income out of necessity. With so many laid off, and literally no need for their particular knowledge, they will have little to no value in the job market.

I dont know how that is resolved outside of a UBI.

The world is changing rapidly, and it just keeps accelerating. I won’t say my wife is “obsessed” with AI, but it’s been a big topic for a while now so my eyes and ears have been open to this.

This makes me think of my college hoops board where there is a thread on dwindling enrollment and sky high tuition and expenses. You HOPE that your education and degree will land you one of those entry level jobs……that are going to go away. Do you want to come out of college with a shiny new diploma and hundreds of thousand$ in student debt looking for a job that no longer exists? Spending four years on that Marketing or English Lit degree is sounding like an expensive vacation that might not pay off at all.

I’m all questions with no answers, but I wonder if more people will pursue work in the trades, make a very good living and not pile up the student loans? Some things still need to be done by people, at least for now.

The trades are a great way to go. And my major of Turfgrass Science, I don't think AI can mow the greens of field, spread the fertilizer, etc.

….and I suppose they have robots to make the robots, so you can’t be a robot-maker, either.

Those bastards thought of everything.

My kid is in Local 210, they’re begging for people. It’s hard work and the (future)bunch coming up don’t want to. Contractors been hiring green cards to fill the void. I hear that’s the case with a few of the local trades.

I was at a meeting where the speaker was from the Economic Development Council. He said it was hard to attract some companies because they couldn’t find the right people to hire. Someone commented about all the very fine higher education we have in this area and his response was “No, we need welders and people like that.”

Neighbor’s kid went into the Electricians local a few years back, they kinda streamlined him to Journeyman. Same thing there, kids don’t want to put the time in and pay their dues. You mentioned “very fine higher education” my kids law firm is experiencing some of the same issues with the generation coming up. They target and hire top/elite University graduates and so many balk at the work and salary.

Law is another that I fear for.

Depositions that take young lawyers all day can be written in 3 minutes  by AI.

Including deep research into past cases!

Oh, that’s just great!

My kid just started doing trials. He’s gonna walk into a courtroom and the opposing attorney’s gonna be a cyborg!

But yeah, hadn’t heard him mention anything like that, but with what’s happening that doesn’t seem a stretch.
