The Detroit Lions have had a very busy day. They've reportedly come to terms on a four-year, $112 million contract with offensive tackle Penei Sewell, making him the new highest-paid player at that position.

This extension is reportedly the largest given to an offensive tackle in NFL history, with a staggering $85 million guaranteed. $85 million is approximately 75% of the contract's total value. He will be making approximately $28 million per year on average, the most of any other tackle in the NFL.

This news comes just a few hours after it was reported that the Lions have also agreed to a four-year, $120 million extension with standout wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown.

Sewell, 23, just completed his third NFL season. Drafted by Detroit with the seventh pick in 2021, it took almost no time for him to become one of the best at his position. He's been to two Pro Bowls and was named first-team All-Pro for the first time in 2023. And he's so young that there's room for him to grow and get even better.

The Lions have made a stunning turnaround in only a handful of years. In 2021, Sewell's first year in the NFL, the Lions went 3-13-1 under first-year head coach Dan Campbell. Then in 2022 they went 9-8, missing the playoffs by just one game. In 2023 the 12-5 Lions made the playoffs via the wild-card, then beat two teams before falling to the San Francisco 49ers in the Conference Championship.

Sewell has been there for all of that, as has St. Brown. They've helped build a winning culture in Detroit, and now they get to stay and keep working to win the Lions that Super Bowl trophy they've always wanted.

Sewell’s deal is reportedly worth $112 million with $85 million guaranteed, though those numbers may be different when the full details are revealed. With an average annual value of $28 million, Sewell’s contract would set a new high-water mark for offensive tackles by $3 million.

And @GunnerBill is still shaking his head at the Bengals to this day

That's about $8m more per year than Dion got.  Sounds about right.  If an offensive tackles falls to #28 I wouldn't be surprised to see the Bills pull the trigger with Spencer Brown going into the final year of his deal.

If they feel they can roll with Brown for the foreseeable future it shouldn't be tough retaining him. It's not like he's considered an elite RT demanding top dollar.

If you are so concerned about Brown's up coming free agency to the point where you draft a tackle in round 1 when there's so many pressing needs (mainly WR but some other areas of the roster that need help) then why not just offer Brown an extension now? Spencer Brown has had one good season in 2023, he was completely garbage in 2022 mainly due to injury and was up and down as a very raw rookie. Yes with a great 2024 he can turn into a commodity on the free agency market but the Bills can always transition tag him.

Honestly assuming they pick up Groot's 5th year option it isn't like the Bills have many free agents going into the summer of 2025. If Groot's option is picked up the Bills primary free agents are going to be Brown, Mike Edwards, Rasul Douglas, Austin Johnson, Mack Hollins, Ty Johnson and Gilliam. Considering Edwards, Johnson, Hollins and Ty Johnson are all players signed on one year lower end deals and Gilliam is a role player that only is really leaving Brown and Douglas (an older CB) as the free agents of note.

Considering the Bills are fully off Diggs, Mitch, Poyer and only eating 5 million on Tre's deal the Bills are going to go into 2025 27 million under the cap with 36 players on the roster but a lot of maneuverability to add 30-40 million in space (I think a Josh restructure saves about 10 million while a Von Miller cut saves about 8 million or if Von comes off a good year they can restructure him, there's also money on the table with Ed Oliver, Dawkins, Milano and a few others).

So the Bills will be a in a good space to resign Brown if they want to and not have it impact their future too much. I think what's going to be interesting is just how much they want to spend in 2025? 2026 is when Groot's option is done and they have all the 2022 draft free agents to consider. Benford, Bernard, Shakir and Cook all expire that off-season. So it's a lot to balance if they want to try and roll over 10-15 million in space to help retain 1-2 more of those players or do they really "go for it" and spend out their space? I think they operate more prudently and try to at least rollover 10 million in space to alleviate the next off-season a bit.

When teams drive up the market like this, the effect in the near term on the draft could be that other teams needing receiver help will be more likely to look for help in the draft than among the remaining free agents or trade acquisitions who would be looking for new deals.  That would mean it is more important for the Bills to get a WR early rather than hoping for a quality guy to slip through almost two full rounds.
