B-Man
Rolling Stone trashing 'Rich Men North of Richmond' because it appeals to the Right goes so WRONG Unless you live under a rock (or are smart enough to avoid social media altogether) you have heard about Oliver Anthony and his powerful debut, 'Rich Men North of Richmond,' which basically calls out the government and the elite for ignoring everyday Americans. This editor finds the line about a dollar being worth less and taxed more extraordinarily poignant. The song is exceptional. And the fact Rolling Stone is passive-aggressively thumbing its nose at it means it's even better than we realize. Look at this happy horse crap: “Rich Men North of Richmond” is a passionate screed against the state of the country and right-wing influencers are very into it. https://t.co/kmsYmDHX5w — Rolling Stone (@RollingStone) August 11, 2023 https://twitchy.com/samj/2023/08/13/rolling-stone-rich-men-north-of-richmond-n2386252 .

B-Man
Oliver Anthony Strikes A Chord Where The Right And Left Agree: Our Failed Elites. It’s not that they refer to meat and cheese plates as charcuterie or that we have elites, Gabriel notes, but that the quality of our current crop has gotten so poor. “Elites of previous eras won world wars, established lasting peace, raised prosperity around the globe and transformed a backwater set of colonies into a global hegemon,” he adds. “Today’s crew can’t defeat third-world foes, police our cities, pay their bills, or keep the power on.” I’d add they can’t even do corruption right. The elites used to be competent when it came to greasing their pockets, maintaining plausible deniability, and the illusion of playing by the same rules as everyone else. Now, every representative who plays Wall Street is a wizard and the White House can wave away obvious influence-peddling schemes with “well, everyone does it.” Long gone is any sense of circumspection or noblesse oblige, which is something that people without special privileges tend to notice. Our tastemakers in the media and D.C. can pretend that people’s natural responses to those changes is an act of faux outrage at those new truths. They can howl about how only they get to be the populists’ rebel musicians, speaking truth to power. Or they can acknowledge that they’re not very good at being elites and that failure invites such populist sentiments as those Anthony articulates. Don’t expect them to, though. https://thefederalist.com/2023/08/15/oliver-anthony-strikes-a-chord-where-the-right-and-left-agree-our-failed-elites/

HomeskillitMoorman
I don't understand the link some people here are making from this guy to Trump's popularity. It makes no sense whatsoever. Trump proved to be just like any other corporate politician. Are we still talking about him "draining the swamp" like he said he was going to do 7 years ago and never did? Yes, I do have to say I am confused about his popularity given that and how a song like this would somehow be in support of him. I would also say if we're looking at it objectively...if someone who came off as "liberal" made a song like this, the other side would probably be saying something along the lines of "that's capitalism bro, get educated and get a better job that pays you more money instead of whining about how little you make". Basically anything anyone makes with a hint of politics will be slammed by the other side. As it usually is, the truth is somewhere in the middle. And a song like this should apply to both Democrats and Republicans...but you don't even have to go outside of this thread itself to see people saying they agree with this song while also at the same time simping out for a Democrat or Republican politician. For all the virtue signaling people are doing when pointing to a song like this...they're still doing and even promoting the SAME EXACT things and people that have led us here. julian
This man is calling out government corruption from both parties and ridiculous taxation of the working man and yet there’s so many people on the left feeling the need to discredit him and the lived experience if millions of people. I don’t understand, If you’ve worked hard and have gotten yourself into a position of comfort and don’t experience what millions of others clearly do, then that’s fantastic and I’m happy you’ve been financially successful but why are many unable to empathize with those working class people struggling. It’s bizarre to see so many come to the defense of rich élite politicians. Do you realize you can publicly agree there’s a problem at the top and not be a Trump supporter simultaneously. Tribalism is exactly where they want you, makes no difference to them which team you’re on.

Actual true liberals (not the Democrat party) have had this message for the longest time. But when we say it, it’s socialism or we’re making excuses for people that aren’t working hard enough to make their situations better and make more money. But when someone who seems to be more like “their own” says it…it’s fighting for the working class. I think both are true. I think there are a lot of people on both or whatever side that don’t want to agree with something unless someone who seems like they’re in their tribe says it, that part we probably agree on. dickleyjones
it's a good song and it's performed well. seems genuine and that goes a long way. the message resonates with most people to be sure. leave it to the media/politik to turn it into right vs left when it's really regular people vs so called elites. that's what they do, it's worked for millennia, big surprise. 1

Of course people will always disagree as to how a problem is best solved, government hand outs vs lowered corporate tax blah blah blah. That’s how the political divide should work. These globalist governments have driven the wedge so deep that now there’s a portion of society (the fortunate segment well off enough to ignore rising taxes, fuel and grocery costs) who are willing take to the front lines for their tribe without critical thought or care. Fortunately the mass majority of people (80% ?) in the middle agree on more things than the government or media want you to know, but that 80% are truly becoming aware and that’s a good thing. I have hope. Edited August 16, 2023 by julian 1

Andy1
I’m late to the party on this one. I just heard the song for first time today. Personally, I like the song representing the plight of struggling workers regardless of race or party. Corporate capitalism rules America. One party has preached trickle down economics for years. “America - love it or leave it”, etc. Labor unions have been broken. Pensions are no more, instead workers get 401ks. If jobs can be outsourced to other countries for cheaper cost, they will be. Corporations get bailouts but not regular people. The struggle of the working class crosses racial and party lines and could be a uniting force but politicians would rather keep America divided on social issues. If anyone doesn’t support the status quo you get labeled a commie. This is where we’re at.
