The physics of “wind confusion” make sense to me.  In this instance, you’ve got a very tall structure with the overhanging (and sloped) canopy that prevents wind from going straight into the stadium and “encourages” the currents to move up.  Then, if the perforated panels do in fact “break up” the wind you’ve simply got a much less aggressive force attacking the structure.  I’m really curious to see what it feels like inside.  I assume they ran models of a full mock-up through a wind tunnel during the design stage…

I’m guessing they did. My point was that these aren’t some magic panels or new technology…at least now that I’ve seen them being installed, they don’t appear to be. As I often say during construction: “wait until it’s finished as there may be more to it”.

Yeah...I'm also just thinking about the way all of those associated with the project talk about the fan experience.  They are acting as though fans are going to be pretty damned comfortable while "enjoying" the fact that the stadium is open air...

I actually think the wind thing is more about the quality of play than it is about fan comfort. I remember so many games in the current stadium where wind had a significant impact on game strategy and it didn’t always help the Bills. The fact that the new stadium is completely encircled with a consistent height grandstand and cantilevered roof (coupled with a more favorable orientation) should greatly cut down on those type of games. Far more than any metal panels they erect on the exterior.

It would have been nice if the Bills new stadium was like Sofi. Roof over head but open air to enter the stadium. In a perfect world a retractable roof is what Buffalo needs. Sept thru Nov there really isn't to many issues with the weather. Maybe a game here or there when it's raining or windy out so then use the roof. For the most part its only Dec and Jan when they need a roof in Buffalo. But I am sure the new stadium will be nice as its presently being built.

Many of you may have read this a few years ago, but for those that didn’t, here’s a link to an article and the opinion of an engineer who deals with wind dynamics. This is the guy who once explained to me why the winds at the current stadium do what they do. I tried explaining his analysis here at some point, but it was pooh-poohed by the masses. Oh well. Anyway, I thought some may find this interesting:

If it's "more comfortable" for the players, it's more comfortable for the fans too.

Comfortable? The on field challenges with wind at the existing stadium are about game strategy and playability. They’re not about players comfort.

Did you see anyone climbing out of a porta-potty covered in feces? I hear that guy loves to check out the new stadium.
